I am trying to locate some missing Dowd siblings as well - they were located in or around San Antonio, TX. Names: Leo Dowd, Lola Mae Dowd, Patricia Dowd, Louise Dowd and Katherin(?) Dowd. Does this mean anything to you? Leo Dowd would be in his 60's - he had a son, Sean A. Dowd that would be in his 40's. Thanks, Lisa ReelPhishy@twlakes.net

My grandmother copied two pages from a book at the Atmore, Alabama Public Library and gave them to me to document the event. I hope it helps you a little!

_Confederate Military History_, Vol VII, The Blue & Grey Press, pp. 176-177:

"...Walthall's Mississippi brigade had fought the famous battle of Lookout Mountain, "above the clouds," as it has been called with poetic license, opposed to the army corps of Joe Hooker. Walthall's brigade was under arms all night, before November 24th, in a line extending on the west slope of Lookout toward the north side which faces Chattanooga; while his pickets, under Lieut.-Col. McKelvaine, covered the creek of the same name at the base of the mountain for two miles from its mouth. He was aware of a considerable movement on the part of the enemy, concealed by a dense fog, and as it lifted from the valley a brigade was seen to go into action against his pickets. the thirty-fourth was sent to strengthen the picket line, and the Thirtieth and Twenty-ninth were posted to meet the threatened attack, and parts of the Twenty-seventh and Twenty-fourth held in reserve. the Federals opened a heavy artillery fire, and attacked in front, while Geary with his division and part of another came up on the left. The gallant Mississippians fought from crag to crag, some of them holding their positions until surrounded and captured; but they were scarcely more than a skirmish line, and were steadily forced back. As the Federal advance came up to the Twenty-seventh and Twenty-fourth, those regiments delivered a scorching fire that withered the enemy's lines and staggered them for a moment; but they poured on around the flanks of the confederates, but the remnant of the latter retired. Meanwhile three companies of the Twenty-fourth, under Capt. J.D. Smith, as sharpshooters, were holding the ridge on the north side of the mountain under fire from the Moccasin Point batteries, to cover the retreat of the brigade. When Colonel Dowd reached the ridge, nothing but a handful of his men remained. The remnants of the other regiments gained this point, and formed line of battle south of the Craven house, but the pickets on the right, under Col. J. A. Campbell, were cut off and mostly captured. Being reinforced, the brigade fought in their new line, holding back Hooker from executing his desired movement against Bragg's left flank until night, the Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth and a remnant of the Thirty-fourth fighting under Colonel Brantly. The loss was very heavy. Fourt companies fo4 the Twenty-fourth, on picket under command of Lieut.-Col. McKelvaine, were killed, wounded, or captured; the Thirtieth lost 130, and the others similar numbers. The brigade was about 1,200 strong, and lost 100 killed and wounded, and 845 captured. The remnant of the brigade served with credit next day on Missionary Ridge, losing 28, among them General Walthall, severely, and Adjutant Campbell, of the Twenty-ninth, mortally wounded.

Regarding John Henry Lash, Phoebe WAS his mother as listed on his birth record but has the father shown as "Unknown." I also heard that John was named after his father who died from either gangrene or consumption around the time of John's birth. Therefore, based on sources, I would think that the full name would be either William John Dowd or John William Dowd. He would have been roughly between 25 and 30 years old at death in 1869.

I am most curious about your family names. Especially George Dowd and Alfred Dowd. My grandfather was born Alfred Dowd - his father - according to adoption records, was George Dowd. George was married to Mary ? according to my grandfather's adoption records. George and Mary had another child, Mamie, born around 1890. My grandfather, Alfred, was born around 1893. Court records state Mary (the mother) died in late 1893 and that her husband, George, if living, had fully abandoned his children.

Alfred and Mamie were taken from the Samaritan Home in Cleveland, Ohio by two different families who adopted them. Does this fit with anything you've found. I appreciate your response.

Wendy

Hello:

I'm searching for any information on James C. Dowd children that were parented with Fannie J. Neal. James and Fannie were married in Winston Salem, NC Dec 3, 1909. The two moved to Oklahoma sometime after they married in 1909 and had two children: Seburn Dowd-1909 & Thurman Dowd-8/22/1911. James Dowd is the son of Fannie & Orion Dowd. Orion (abt 1849-Alcorn, Mississippi) is the son of Afred & Amanda Dowd. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Denise

Certainly hope y'all are still reading this board! John Dowd is my 3rd great grandfather through his daughter Martha who married Reddick/Rederick Parsons. I found online some land information that gave the names of John's daughters, but I have been unable to locate the name of his sons. Any help will be appreciated.

These queries are a bit old, but it is worth a shot!
I am looking for information about John DOWD b.ca 1779 in NC, d. 1850-1860. Found some land documents online showing his daughters, but if I am looking at the correct 1830-1840 census of Chatham County, he should have 2 sons. Also these land documents pertaining to division of his estate mentions there being 6 children and it names the 4 daughters. According to the 1850 Chatham Co. census his wife's name was Mary. Daughters are: Nancy Jane m.Jeremiah Tillman, Jan m. John G. Cheek, Elizabeth m.Atlas J. Gilbert, Martha m. Reddick Parsons(my great-great grandparents. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Connor and Owen Dowd: father and son or brothers?

My cousin was doing some research in the North Carolina archives when she ran across a petition from Judith Dowd, Owen's wife. Judith is asking for some land that was owed to Owen, because Owen took care of Connor's accounts and debts in Ireland. She refers to Owen as being Connor's brother twice. This petition was made in 1789.

Then recently I have heard a family story that says Connor, John, Charles and Owen were brothers. Connor, John and Charles came to NC first and were followed later by Owen.

Everything else I see says that Connor and Owen were father and son, but no one gives any sources to back this up. Although Connor says his son was killed in the Revolutionary War on the side of the Loyalists, he never mentions Owen by name. Also, there is never a first name given to the Dowd that was killed at Lindley's Mill in 1781.

Does anyone have any information or sources that would put this puzzle to rest?

Catharine
