Hi
How wonderful to find someone else researching my GG Grandmother and Fathers line. I will give you access to the Tree on Ancestry as a visitor.
Who is Kevin and how is he linked i.e. which of Frederick's children as he and his wife, Sarah Ann Polley had eleven?
So looking forward to hearing from you again.
Kind Regards from a wet and stormy Lancashire.
Sandra

Sandra,

I am researching the same family for my friend, Kevin Double, who is descended from the Frederick Double you mention. Frederick's parents were Henry and Mary Ann. I am trying to find out if there is a link back to Suffolk. I would be grateful if you could get in touch, so that we can share research.

Catherine

Searching for any ancestors of my great grandfather George Gaylord Double Sr. (b. 1887 PA, d.1995 PA, Lawrence Co., PA. Wife-Carrie Macom 1886-1983)

Father: Seth W. Double (b. 1854 Ohio, d. 1911 PA. Wife-Mary Jane Woods 1857-1935)

Grandfather: John Double (b. abt. 1825 in PA. Found in 1850 and 1860 census but cannot trace further back.

1870 Census shows Seth W. and brother Joseph E. living with Zephaniah (b. abt 1804) & Elizabeth Double. Possibly Seth's grandfather or uncle.

George always said they were from Ireland but no trail to follow.

Any info, particularly on John or Seth, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
For those who may not know:
With deep regret I have to announce the passing of a good friend and a wonderful 'Double' researcher of several years standing Mr Ray Double of Suffolk in England.
Ray suffered ill health for several years but, his determination together with his love of life, family and all things 'Double' kept pulling him through each trauma. Unfortunately, on New Years Eve last he had to give up the fight.
He passing has left a gaping hole in our lives as he, together with a cousin, Laurie in New Zealand, was a world renowned Double researcher and archivist.
Ray will be missed by his family and all his genealogy friends and colleagues. God Bless you Ray.

Just had another look at the English side of the Doubles trying to find the James who arrived in the USA to begin the Double dynasty over there. I found a James Double born July 1751 baptized 17 Jul 1751, born in East Grinstead Sussex to a James Double and Elizabeth.(No surname for Elizabeth or date of birth for James though probably born about 20 years earlier).
There's no detail of James b 1751 marrying here or where he ended up. They also had another son Daniel born Feb 1745 and baptized 12 Feb 1745.
20 Years ealier in that place a Richard Double and his wife Mary had two sons Thomas born 1720 baptized 14 Feb 1720 and, Daniel 1722 Baptized 24 Nov 1722. I think it more than likely that they also had a son James born at about the same time who would have become the father of James born 1751. Christian names usual re-occur within families.

Hi Karen, My spreadsheet is a little short on the USA Doubles but I do have the following:
Not confirmed yet but believe that a James Double born about 1750 married a Sarah Reading on 4 Oct 1776 and that they were the parents of John B Double and Jacob. No details of where James and Sarah were born or where they married, you could maybe research that in the USA.
John B Double born 3 March 1784 in Westmoreland, PA
m Jane Byrne.
Jacob Double born abt 1790 in Westmoreland, PA m Winifred Masters.
Zephaniah Double born 11 June 1804 in Westmoreland PA, died 9 Sept 1804 child of John B Double and Jane Byrne.
Hamilton Double was born 15Aug 1820 in Westmoreland PA to John B Double and Jane Byrne.
Anna Marie Double born 14 Apr 1816 in Westmoreland PA to Jacob Double and Winfred Masters. Winifred married John Judd.
I have extracted the USA Doubles from my spreadsheet and will send it to you if you let me have your email address or you could contact me on mine which is sandra.cardwell@sky.com and I will send the spreadsheet by return email. There are 79 entries up to the birth of a Dennis double in California in 1939.

All the best
Sandra

My Double line comes from Suffolk as well. Maybe we have a common ancestor?

Do you have any information on:

Cornelius Double, born May 1818, Copdock , Suffolk
John Double, baptised in Bentley, Suffolk in 1784
Cornelius Double born about 1759 in Tattingstone, Suffolk
Cornelius Double born 1697 in Sproughton, Suffolk

I've got some information on these people originally given to me by Sandra Cardwell(who has posted here previously).

The first Cornelius above is my 3rd great grandfather. His son, Charles Cornelius Double, and his wife and children came to New Zealand in 1874 on the ship Rooparell.

I have quite a bit of information on Charles' son William who was on the ship aged a few months. But I'd love more information on those from Suffolk if you have them.

Chris.

Hi Jacqui
We had thought at one time that my GGGrandfather Henry born Harwich had married Mary Ann Arben but soon found out that he married Mary Ann Scott from Great Oakley. I have taken a look at my 'Double' preadsheet but don't have her down as being a spouce. I also checked the 1881 and 1891 census but but could only find my Mary Ann and Henry. Not sure where you could go from here. It might be best to send for the marriage certificate to make sure which man she married. Would be worth the £7 to save you some time.
If I find anything else will get back to you.
Best Wishes
Sandra

Mary Ann Arben

Hi

I have a Mary Ann Arben (my direct line on my fathers side) that was born in BARROW, Bury St Edmunds, UK, which is the Thingoe area (or Hundred I'm told) born circa 1831, her father was William Arben born circa 1816 wife, Elizabeth? or Eliza born circa 1811 (Eliza is what I have on censors) born in Barrow, I do not know if there were any other children from this marriage, Elizas husband died I believe and she re-married a GARDNER, probably in Barrow/Bury St Edmunds, but not sure.

Both Mother and Daughter landed up living and working in London according to the Census's 1851 & 1871 I have found. also the Census has Eliza without her 2nd husband.

Mary Ann Arben, single, got herself pregnant with her son Joseph Richard BINNS Arben, born 1852 in Lambeth, London. We've since found out he was named after his father although she never married him, he was a young man Joseph Binns visiting London on business from Huddersfield, Yorkshire. (extra history included in case you know of this birth :-)

We think she may of went on to marry either Henry Double or William Wallis in Thingoe 4th Quarter 1877. Both names appear on the Free BMD Site, along with Mary Ann Arben and Emma Smith, so Henry could be a possible match for us if you have found it was Mary Ann he married.

Anyway, I hope I haven't bored you too much :-) and look forward to hearing from you.

Jacqui
Hi Sandra,- wow thats a lot of Doubles! Thankyou for yr response. Im very interested to hear that My Nick has been included , and would be fascinated to see more, although I must be honest and state straight away that I don't really have any info to share in return a s far as Doubles are concerned ( other than the obvious details about ourselves and Nicks adoptive brother and sister) as his adoptive parents did not seem close to their families, so we only have vague mention of some of his aunts and uncles. We know his father had a brother called Norman. very many thanks and best wishes,
Sue.
