Hi, I am looking for some information on my grandfathers family. His name was George John Double, he was born 1911 in Grimsby, England. His father was William Thomas Double and his mother was Virginia Scrimshaw. Both my grand father and great grand father were Master Mariners. But I don't know any more. Can somebody help me?

We have found a record of S. Double who was on a ship from London in 1903. This record is at the Ellis Island site.
I can not email you directly as I don't have your email address.
We think this may have been Seth Double, but are not certain. Any further information on Seth Double would be welcomed.

(1891 census John living with daughter & her husband - he is 72 then "born Wopping" and died 78 years old)
+ Eliza OSBOURNE (not 100% on her last name) b 1817? d 13 Dec 1890 at 73 years of age.

2Harriet DOUBLE b? m 16 Jun 1883 Middlesex - she was blind.
+George GARDENER b 1858 Egham, Surrey d 8 Mar 1929 buried Englefield Green. He is on the same headstone as Eliza & John his inlaws.

I have been lucky enough to have been given a spreadsheet of about 4000 Doubles from around the world and included on that list is information about your ancestors.
William James Thomas Double was born on the 26th Aug 1866 at Gorleston Suffolk to George Double and Mary Ann Woodley.
William Thomas was married three times. 1st wife was Lavinia Scrimshaw on the 27th June 1909, 2nd was Gladys Myee Standen and the 3rd marriage was to Elsie Lena May Marr. He died on the 25th September 1965 was cremated and his ashes spread at sea.
His father George was born in 1853 and christened on the 23 May 1854 at Holbrook Suffolk. He married Mary Ann Woodley on the 3 Nov 1883 at West Thurrock.
George a Mariner was serving on the ship "Frances" when on 27 Jan 1901 he was lost overboard during heavy storms. Mary Ann was b.c. 1861 in Barking Essex. In 1891 Mary Ann is shown as head and living with family at 97 Trafalgar Road Gorleston. Marriage witnesses were Mary Ann Elvey and Thomas Woodley. The vicar was Thomas A Morley.
George was the son of Jonathon Double and Sarah Flory who married on the 4 Feb 1850. Jonathon was born in 1820 at Copdock and christened 22 Oct 1820.
Jonothon was the son of Joseph Double and Lydia Sheldrake who married 14 Oct 1819.
Joseph was born 11 May 1796 at Copdock and was the son of Henry Double and Mary Osborn and born 1768 after their marriage on the 28 Dec 1790 at Copdock.
Henry was the son of Cornelius Double and Mary Martin who married in 1750. Cornelius was born 1730 and Died 8 Feb 1778. Don't have his parents as yet.

John Double was born abt 1819 but his Christening was several years later 7 Dec 1834 at Westminster.
He was the son of Stephen Double and Sarah Smith.
John Married Eliza Osborn on the date you gave and his date of death is also the same.
Stephen Double was born 1787 and he was christened on the 15 May 1787 at Brantham in Suffolk.
Sorry but I can't take you back further than that at the moment.

I was amazed when I read your post about having a spreadsheet with more than 4000 Double's. I have a young daughter who recently started to ask questions about our family and where our history comes from. I am embarassed to admit that I cannot trace the Double name back more than two generations. I was hoping that you would be willing to share the spreadsheet with me as a reference for my own research into my families past.

Nows as good a time as any to begin your research At least you will have access to close family and thay should be where you start.
If you have any information at all I will gladly help you to trace your tree back as far as you can. I enjoy a challenge!!!!
Do you have information like your Double Grandparents names, where they lived etc.
I have at least one Philip Double on my list born in Henley on Thames. Could that be you? You say you have a young daughter so you must be about the same age as this person.
Unfortunately, the list is not mine to give. It was compiled by a good friend and is with me as a gift.

Hi Iam trying to trace family tree, with my cousin do not have very much info to begin with My grt Nan's name was Agnes Marie Double, Nans name same as great Nan from Bury St Edmundsapparently farming family , my father was born in 1918 in kensington and then was shipped out here to WA as an orphan his name is James Double. The double family is either related to the Everards the only otherinfo I have is they are from cheverington area The Grandfather was known as Duke Double had about 12 children sorry this is all I know
