Also looking for Dedic's (Chicago)

I am looking for information on the following Dedic line:

My Great Grandfather was named Joseph J. Dedic, born 1863 in Bohemia. He came to the U.S. about 1882/1883. His wife was named Marie and they settled in Cook County, Chicago, Illinois.

Joseph and Marie had a number of children including Anne, John James, Joseph F., Frank J., and Marie. Children were born in the U.S.

My Grandfather was John James Dedic and wed Elizabeth Steinhorst. John and Elizabeth had two children named Raymond and Doris. After John died in Chicago, Elizabeth moved to California. Her children followed her.

Raymond is my father.

I am looking for more history on Joseph and Marie and relatives. Also any details of Dedic heritage from Bohemia are greatly appreciated.
How wonderful to hear from you!! We are related. My maternal grandmother, Josephine, was Richard's older sister. Richard was the youngest of five children. I have information on each of grandmother's siblings except Richard...probably because he moved out of state. I would appreciate it if you could provide me with his birth date, birthplace, who he married & when (I think her name was Hazel, right?), and when he died. I am happy to share with you any information that I have on the family!

I have no information at all on Joseph Dedic's parents/family nor on his wife's (Anna Pocenik Dedic's) parents or family. I have contacted many of the local relatives and no one seems to know.

The timing of your response is wonderful as Mom and I are having some of Anna Dedic's family over for lunch tomorrow. As you may know Anna & Joseph were siblings of Richard; they were twins born on July 22, 1888 in Nove Mesto, Bohemia. They were born 4 years after my grandmother.

I would welcome the opportunity to e-mail back & forth with you. My direct e-mail address is jeaniemoll@comcast.net.

Have you been able to gather many family details from the old country? I have not been able to find much information from the old country.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Jeanie

Do you know on what ship and when your grandfather came to this country? I assume he came with his mother and sister, Anna. I do have copies of the ship's manifest from Ellis Island showing that Joseph Dedic Sr. and two of his sons, (Joseph Jr & Frank) came over on the steamship "Rhein" which departed from Bremen, Germany on June 2, 1907 and arrived in New York Harbor on June 15, 1907. The records show that they were going to the US to join Joseph Dedic Sr's cousin; however, I don't know who that was. I have been unable to track down when Anna, the mother, and Anna, the daughter arrived. Can you shed any new light on this?

Jeanie
Bob, I think I may have come across your Dad in the Ellis Island records. Does this info fit for your family? Josef Dedic (Place of residence=Pawlovice, Moravia) arrived at Ellis Island on March 16, 1910 via the Crown Princess Cecelia which departed Europe from Bremen, Germany. Josef was 19 yrs old and single at the time. On the passenger listing (difficult to read some of the handwriting) it indicates that his father is Antorsin (?) Dedic. It also indicates that his destination in the US was Iowa where his brother-in-law, (Fr Kubik) was located. You can see the information and see the passenger manifest at ellisisland.org.

Are you any relation to a Jan (John?) Dedic? Ellis Island records indicate that a Frantiska Dedic from Paclovice, Moravia arrived on the King Louis on May 1, 1912 and was headed to Traer, Iowa to meet her father, Jan.

Are you related to a Lukas & Filomena Dedic who settled in Chicago?

Cheers! Jeanie (jeaniemoll@attbi.com)

He worked on it for a few years and then didn't have the time to work on it anymore. My father was Joseph Dedic(1891-1956 born in Pavlasice,Czechoslovakia) who married Marie Pavlicek(1892-1976 born in Mala Cerna,Czechoslovakia). They lived in Traer,Iowa and had 5 children(George 80,Joseph Jr. deceased,Dorothy deceased,Stanley deceased and me 64. George still lives in Traer and I live in St. Louis,Mo. My dad's grandfather was also Joseph Dedic who married Mary Rosek. I have no dates on them or if they ever came to the U.S. I don't know if there is any relationship here.

Bob Dedic

Hmmmm....this is quite interesting. As I can see on this message board, most of your ancestors came from the Czech. I didn't know of any connection between the last name and the Czech rep. before this. My family has lived in Serbia for more than 200 years and they probably migrated from Montenegro (late 1700s). The last name is supposed to be originaly from there. It is spread in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Croatia as far as I know.... Any explanations about the Czech? I'm very curious about this, please write if you have any info

Kris from Belgrade, Yugoslavia

I am not sure which, I will try and find out. I suppose you being in Iowa most of your life that you wouldn't have known any Dedics' in Michigan. Nice to hear from you and tell your Nephew I said hello. My name is Kenneth Allan Dedic.

I have been living in St. Louis, Mo. for 37 years.
I would be interested in getting more information about the Dedic's from your granfather.
Hello Bob,
My Grandfather is Charles Dedic, He lives in Michigan. I'm not a Dedic myself, I have my father's name. But my mom's side of the family are Dedic's. We live in Wisconsin, but most of the rest of the Dedic's are from Michigan. You should really get in touch with my Grandpa, he has 2 books out on our backround and the area. He is currently working on his 3rd. Why don't you email me back and I can give you more details if you are interested.
Heather Hauschultz
