Cunliffes of St. Helen's or Eccleston, Lanc.

I am looking for Cunliffes of St. Helen's Lancashire. My grandfather, Peter Cunliffe, was born in either 1871 or 1867. His father (given name not known)kept an antique shop in St. Helen's (years unknown but presumably between 1850-1915).Peter married Margaret Ellen Pye in Eccleston around 1890, Church of England. In 1912 Peter moved his family (wife and 5 children to Canada). Children were William, Herbert, Fred, Gladys and Ida.I'm trying to trace back to the parents of Peter. I believe he had a sister, Hannah.
Does anyone relate to any of this information. Thanks.
Diana

One of my ancestors - George Cunliffe - was born in St Helens in 1872. His father's name was John Cunliffe and he was a labourer in the glass works. George also had a daughter called Gladys.

No idea if there might be a connection, but thought I'd let you know!

Hi Shiela,

Thank you for your reply to my request. Sorry I couldn't respond sooner, but yes, I am interested in any Cunliffes from St. Helen's. I can't tell yet if there is a connection or not but hopefully later this month I will get back to work on this and would like to stay in touch in case a common link turns up. I don't seem to have an E-mail address for you so hope this works. Thanks again,

Diana

I have done quite a lot of research in the St Helens and other areas particularly the names Joseph, Peter, John, Ralph, and Miles, and if you would like to get in touch with me I will see if I can help you.

Hi Averil,

Thank you for your reply to my message on the Cunliffe Surname Board. I would be very interested in any information you might give be about Cunliffes in St. Helen's. Of the names you mention, Peter is the only one that we have in common but as yet I have not been able to go back further than Peter, who was my grandfather.Does your Peter fall into the same timeframe? The only other information I have is that my father had cousins by the name of McLean (Gladys and Dorothy)who I believe were cousins on the Cunliffe side. He had also an aunt Hannah. I'm not sure if she was a Cunliffe or a Pye. My father's parents and siblings lived for a time on Hard Lane in St. Helen's as did the McLean cousins. My great-grandfather as mentioned in my original message apparently owned an antique shop in St. Helen's; also either he or my grandfather, Peter, was involved in the building of a block of brick row houses which I saw when I visited the McLeans many years ago. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the street. This information is probably not very useful to you but I thought I would mention the few things I know about the family.

Can you tell me how accurate you have to be with dates to write for information on Births,Marriages, Deaths to the Registration District Office. That was to be my next step as I have my father's birthdate (July 25, 1893) and my grandfather's (July 30, 1871 (or 1867)) I hope to get information on Peter's parents from his birth records.

My E-mail address is: dborneuf@sprint.ca if you wish to correspond directly to me.

Again, thanks for your reply. Hope to hear from you.

Diana

My G.Grandfather William CUNLIFFE was born in Newton Le Willows, Ashton in Makerfield in 1841. This is in your vicinity and I am very interested in locating any of the descendants or siblings of his family. His marriage cert states his father was also William. No mother mentioned. He was a member of the St Thomas Parish. His third child was James Edward born in Warrington. William's Occupation was Blacksmith. He emigrated to NZ. in 1874. Are you able to make any connection with this Family for me, or offer any possible contact.

Thanks for your reply to my message. You are right that Newton le Willows and Ashton in Makerfield (two seperate towns by the way) are near St Helens but, as you may know, Cunliffe is a pretty common name in the NW of England and the distance between St Helens and the other towns you mention is significant enough for the connection to be unlikely. As far as I am aware there is no connection. Coincidentally, my parents now live in Ashton in Makerfield and one of my brothers lives in Newton le Willows!

Best of luck with your search

Lydia is a very unusual name in the Cunliffe records, and she may have been christened in memory of another Lydia in the same family. I am going to check my database for you and it is possible that I may have the marriage and other census information. Will you let me have your e-mail address so that I can reply to you personally. My address is averilken@supanet.com.
