Hi my grandfather was from Altar, Mexico and crossed over in a covered horse drawn wagon. Can't tell you when but it was many years ago. It was also passed down to us that we were from French descent. I just have not been able to trace the name. Do you have anymore info, or does this sound familiar to you? I'd just like to know where I came from.
Thanks,
Sandie

Henry S. Cota (Cote?), of French parents, b. Feb. 1837, Malvern, Carroll, OH.

I am seeking any clue to the parents of Henry S. Cota, b. 03 Feb. 1837 at Malvern, Carroll, OH (as per Civil War pension documents) or b. 09 Feb. 1837 at Ohio (as per his death certificate).

According to his biographical sketch in the Mecosta County [Michigan] Portrait & Biographical Album, published 1883, Henry S. Cota "farmer on section 16, Aetna Tp., was born in Carroll Co., Ohio, in 1837. His parents were born in France, emigrated to the United States and settled in the Buckeye State, where his father was drowned while laboring in the river service. Mr. Cota was in his infancy and his mother bound him to a man named Adam Hardesty. He was so very young he lost all trace of her and does not know that he has a relative by blood on the earth. He remained with Mr. Hardesty until he was 18 years of age, when he was released from his bonds and found employment in Paulding Co., Ohio, and was there occupied for five years."

A decade of research has failed to turn up any indication of Henry's parents, and it doubtful that even Henry knew their names. According to family tradition, Henry S. Cota's full name was Henry Sherman Cota, but the middle name seems unlikely to have been given at birth by French parents, and I suspect he adopted it later in life, perhaps in honor of General William Tecumseh Sherman, under whom Henry S. Cota served during the March to the Sea.

The French spelling of Henry's surname is not recorded. It is given as Coty in the 1850 census, Cota in 1860, Cody in 1870, and Cota for every census thereafter. Cote seems to be the most probable original spelling, based on these (presumably phonetic) renderings.

Since all efforts to find Henry's parents by working backwards have failed, I am hoping there is someone out there who can offer a candidate by working forwards -- perhaps a Cote family that was known to have gone to Ohio in the 1830s and was not heard of again; a Cote family with a child Henri, b. ca. 1837, also not heard of again; etc. Any lead, however slim, would be far more than I have at present.

It is clear Henry S. Cota knew little himself about his ancestry, and although he insisted in every document where the question arose that his parents were French, it is not impossible that they were in fact French-Canadian.

In 1867 Henry S. Cota married Isabel Shock, the daughter of William P. Shock and Elizabeth Woodcock. The line is well-documented from that time forward.

This is great, another lead, I'll be glad to share what I have.I heard the name Lavoie too, but wasn't sure about the tribe.
I dont know which is better, email or here so im posting here too my family line goes from John and Sophronia's son William, his son Roy is my Great grandfather, Roy's son Victor is my grandfather, and my father Henry. As far as obtaining a copy of the documentation, that wont be too hard, the pages are in a loose binder so it will be easy to copy. As far as the name change, we have heard that it may have been Lavoie before, but that was never confirmed. As for the Iroquois heritage, all we heard was there was some indian blood in the family, but nothing beyond that.

Please let me know. I've been at a dead end for some time now, and it all revolves around the Lowell family. I have pictures of John & Sophronia on tin. My grandmother is Louise Beaumont, Her mother was Dell Donah ( Lowell ), which her mother was Sopronia. I'd love a copy of the research. Do you know anything about which Indian Tribe Sophronia came from? I know it goes back into Canada, and I have a newspaper clipping that said one of the sons changed the name to Lowell when they came to the USA. Do you know what that is? Who are you a desendant from. I know John and Sophronia had 14 children and 3 that died. Plus maybe some adopted ones too.

I saw you inquiring on some geneology on the Lowells. I have a typed research paper from one of our cousins that goes back to John and Sophronia. It lists quite a bit of info and I am compiling it to add to the Ancestry Tree. I will get back to you when it is added

Chris

Hello David;

Gen. Cota had a sister named "Ardell Cota". To my knowledge, "Ardell" is his only sister? She is also mentioned in his biography "Division Commander" by Robert A. Miller.

According to Fran Cota-Johnson, there is a common ancestor that comes up... "Daniel Cota", from about 1798, born in St. Albans VT.

Can you ask or find additional information from your family as to your Grandmother being "An Unknown/unrecorded Member" or blood/half cousin of this Cota family group?

Best Regards;

Al (Alfred "Ed Moch" Cota)
Hello David:

In the "Geneology of Capt. Hugh Mason" by William Bond... Gen. Norman Cota, his sister and parental family are recorded.

As I understand, "The General" only had one Son, Leut. Col. Norman Daniel "Dan" Cota Jr., Born Dec. 15, 1921, Washington D.C. and Died March 18, 1988 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Are we talking about the same "Norman Cota" or a cousin/kin here?

Al (Alfred "Ed Moch" Cota)

Thank you for that message Alfred, I have recently entered cyberspace and am currently surfing the web for the first time, it is wonderful. Yes it seems that so far Norman Cota is the name in my family that I can link with other family members. From what I understand, he was a General during WWII and was portrayed by Robert Mitchum in the movie The Longest Day. I will take your suggestion on contacting Fran Cota Johnson, bye for now ED Moch.

Hello;

My name is Alfred "Ed Moch" Cota... I am the alledged biological Son of Norman "Dan" Cota Jr.

I have been doing much historical research on "The Cota Families". Though there are various branches, some of the names seem to re-occur. It could be possible that we might be cousins?

I would be interested in getting in contact with you. Most of the Cota families in The New England Area are related? Perhaps the name "Norman Cota" is a common ancestor that connects us.

There is a person named Fran Cota-Johnson near your neck of the woods of Conn. that has an extensive Cota Family chart... try connecting with her as well.

Best Regards;

Al (Alfred "Ed Moch" Cota)

Cota in L.A. looking for original Cota's from Sinaloa de Leyva, Sinaloa, Mexico

I'm in Norwalk (Los Angeles), California trying to find out if anyone has family links to the Margarito Cota and his wife Ynes(Ines)Soto family from around Sinaloa de Leyva and Los Mochis. They had 19 children around the late 1800's and early 1900's. The story is told that 3 of the children went to California (Margarito II, Micalea, and ?). One of the 19 is my grandmother, Lorenza Cota she lived and died in Los Mochis if I'm correct back in the 1940's. I believe she was one of the youngest. She had 6 children. The first from a previous relationship. His name I believe is Alejandro. The other 5 where from my grandfather, a Chinese immigrant, Manuel Ley. Their children from eldest are Tomas Cota(deceased around the late 1970's)& a twin (died at birth), Ines Cota-Rubio (deceased around 2002), Maria Guadalupe Cota-Sholander(living in Norwalk, CA at age 82), and my father Juan Esteban Cota (living in Norwalk, CA at age 72). I know there are a lot of Cota's up and down California going back to Andres Cota and Angela Leon back in 1700's in El Fuerte, Sinaloa. Just trying to see if there are any connections. Thanks.
