I am a direct descendant of Andreas Cota through his son, Roque Jacinto Cota, and his son, Guillermo Cota. Guillermo's dau., Maria Loreta, married Juan Bouett in Los Angeles in 1847. I should like to communicate with you since the line of Andreas Cota becomes quite vague (for example, where was Villa de Fuerte, Sinaloa?)

My half-brothers & sister are descendants of Rogue Jacinto de Cota, Guillermo Cota (former "mayor" of Los Angeles), Leonardo Maria Cota & Teofilo Prudencio Cota. Their grandmother was one of Teofilo's daughters. There are several genealogies online, but most are on Pablo Antonio de Cota, Rogue's brother. There is a book of genealogy's with our family recorded, by Marie E. Northrop. If interested I will give you information on how to order. Use the search engine www.google.com and search the different Cota names and find some history notes too. Thanks.

I knew Marie before she died, and I have her books. One problem with her work has always been that, while it is usually reliable, she did not provide her sources, so anyone wishing to further her work must first reproduce it. This is a serious limitation, in my opinion. I am descended from Roque through his son, Guillermo (alcalde of Los Angeles in 1817), and Guillermo's daughter, Maria Loreta. I, like most researchers of this Cota family, are working on the 'Andres de Cota'/Villa de Sinaloa/el Fuerte problem.

Thomas Workman Temple, II, prepared pedigree charts in 1947, and he gave a copy to the Cota family. It includes with Andres, Rogue, Guillermo and Leonardo Cota. I believe Marie used this as a basis for her books – she dedicated them to his memory. Marie Loreto Cota was the ninth child of Guillermo and Maria Manuela Antonia Nieto (his second wife). There are no children recorded for the years he was married to his first wife. Maria Loreta was born on September 10, 1824 in Pueblo de los Angeles, and married Juan Bouet on November 16, 1847. There is no record of her death. This is all I have on her.

Visit http://www.losangelesalmanac.com/topics/Government/gl11.htm for a listing of the different terms served by Guillermo.

This is all I can find on Marie Loreta. Thanks for your response.

Yes, but the 1947 Temple charts contain many errors; there has been an update of them that I have not yet seen. I talked with Tom Temple about this once in Santa Barbara, and while he acknowledged the errors, he was too sick to have been able to correct them. As for the first marriage of Guillermo Cota to Maria de Jesus Lisalde, there were at least three children that I have (all unverified): Clara, José[f] Manuel Maria, and Josefa. As for his second marriage to Maria Manuela Antonia Perez Nieto, the daughter of José Manuel Nieto, I believe Maria Loreta (the correct name) was the seventh of nine children (b. before 10 September 1824), while Francisco was b. about 1825 and Maria Luisa was b. about 1828 (from the 1850 US Census for California). Sincerely, Lawrence

One other thing I forgot to mention: the reference to the California Historical Society Quarterly [Bouvette, Juan and Loreta (Cota), 13:331], is for Juan Bouett, my direct ancestor. This family can be found in the 1850 Census for California: "... Dwelling number 125; House number 125: ... Juan Uet, 35, Male, Laborer, born in France; Loreta (same surname), 24, Female, born in California ...". Juan Bautista Bouett was incorrectly indexed in the Newhall 1850 California index as 'Juan Uct'; the actual census entry is 'Juan Uet', which makes sense if one considers how 'Bouett' was spoken in Spanish to a Yankee census-taker who spoke only English ...

My husband is a descendent of Leonardo Maria Cota & Maria Inez Dolores Yorba through their daughter Victoria de Jesus Cota. Any information you can provide on the Cota family would be appreciated.

Thanks for your response. Your last name prompts me to ask the question: Are you related to Victoria Meyer (Meyers?), my grandmother's cousin? She probably died in the late 1940s. She lived in Whittier, California.

I have internet information about the Cota family that I can give you the website addresses for. As you probably read from the other messages attached to the one you responded to, I have a pedigree chart prepared by Thomas Workman Temple, II. It is hand printed and on legal size paper and would probably not scan well. You can go to your local library and have them request the books by Maria Northrop, "Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850" Volume 1 & 2. These are expensive to purchase, but you can check them out through the interlibrary system. Her books are based on Temple's charts.

I will e-mail you directly with some attachments. What word processing do you have -- WordPerfect, MicroSoft Word, or MicroSoft Works? I don't have MicroSoft Word, but it will let you save WordPerfect documents, I think. I am going to e-mail you a photo of a marker I just recently discovered online.

My e-mail address is mitz326@cs.com.
