I am looking for any information regarding my ggrandma, Ellen Conroy, who came from an Irish family in Wigan, England to New York in about 1890. I'm more than happy to share any info. Following is what I now about her grandparents and parents:

Wow! Thank you. You have laid out the history of my mother's family that I thought I would spend ages researching.

My mother was Ruth D. Brady, daughter of Francis E. Brady and Hilary Hogan. They lived in Brooklyn, NY on St Mark's Avenue and Nostrand Avenue. My mother was one of 5 children: Dorothy Brady Kenniff, Francis 'Sonny' Brady, John 'Jack' Brady and Carol Brady Baker.

My mother spoke of her gradmother, Ellen, who she adored. She mentioned that Ellen came across with a sister and a friend (Mary?), who she also knew. Did you know my mother or any of her siblings? You must be cousins.

I have heard that my gr gr gr grandfather was a publican in Wigan. As I live in England now, I intended to go to Wigan and dig through the records. You have given me a great headstart. I hope to find some photos of the pub.

I have heard that my mother's cousin, George Brady of Long Island, has done a lot of research into the Conroy family. He has located some of them still living in Wigan. Unfortunately, I don't have this information. As soon as I get more details, I will pass them on to you.

Once again, thank you so much!

Sorry, I made a few mistakes. James Conroy is only my gr gr grandfather and I realize that Ellen was your gr grandmother, just as she was mine.

I would appreciate hearing about what you find. Ellen Conroy was my great grandmother. My father was Thomas Brady III and my son is TAB V. My Aunt (TAB III's sister) remembers Ellen Conroy and some of her stories about the crossing and the pub in Wigan. She actually just gave me a picture of TAB, the city accountant and 4 of his children: TAB Jr, George, Walter and Helen.

I can be reached at nicholasabrady@gmail.com. Given the length of time between posts, if this email address no longer works, you might also be able to track me down through a legal directory as I am an attorney licensed to practice in Texas and District of Columbia.

I hope to hear from you. Thanks so much for this information.

Hi, TAB was my great grandfather also. I've been doing research again recently and have a few more details about TAB and TAB II. I hope it's not a repeat of what you already know. Most of it was gleaned from the census reports and military records.

TAB was born March c. 1873 in Oswego, NY. He married Ellen Conroy in 1893. It's possible they were married in Jersey City, NJ because TAB II (b 1894) and Francis E (b 1896, my grandfather) were both born in Jersey City. In 1900 they lived at 514 West 29th Street, Manhattan. TAB was a bookkeeper. In 1920 they lived at Bay 10th Street, Brooklyn with his family and Francis E's family too. By this time TAB was an accountant. He seems to have enlisted in the Army in 1904 at the age of 29 years and 10 months. He was in the 11th Cavalry, but it is not clear how long he served, as there are two discharge dates: Sept 2, 1904 and Sept 30th, 1907. Apparently he had light hair, blue eyes and was 5' 3 3/4'' tall - a pretty small guy! I guess you might be able to see that in the photo your aunt gave you. My aunt Dorothy (TAB's grandaughter) was also very small. In the 1930 census he is living at 132 Corning Avenue in Onondega, Syracuse, NY as a lodger and working as a carpenter - maybe due to the Stock Market crash?? The rest of the family lives at 1317 East 4th Street in Brooklyn. Ellen is the head of household and has two sons and her daughter living with her, as well as her daughter-in-law and her son: Chas (Charles), George, Beatrice, George Jr and Grace (George's wife).

I hope this helps shed some light on the family history. If you have details, such as names, birth places and dates of some of your family, I would be interested in adding those to my family tree. Also any other stories or photos that your aunt shares with you would be most welcome. I'm not sure if you can scan the photo, but if so, I would love to have a copy of it.

I've been to Wigan and Orrell in Lancashire where John Conroy and Mary Lynch met and were married. We went to St James church in Orrell and quickly found the graves of John and Mary there. I'm sure Ellen would have been christened in that church too. I've recently figured out from census records that the Black Bull pub must have been in Pemberton and not in Orrell. I don't know if it still exists as a pub but I doubt it. I found that it was on a street called Lord St but that name seems to have changed since that time. I'm trying to locate an old map of the area so that I can see what the name has become. I'm going to drag my husband and kids back up there to do some research one of these days.

Hi,

I was checking the posting regarding Ellen Conroy on the Board at the Ancestry.com web site and was really pleased to see your fairly recent posting (April 09). TAB was my great grandfather also. I've been doing research again recently and have a few more details about TAB and TAB II. I hope it's not a repeat of what you already know. Most of it was gleaned from the census reports.

TAB was born March 1870 or possibly 1873 in NY. He married Ellen Conroy in 1893. It's possible they were married in Jersey City, NJ because TAB II (b 1894) and Francis E (b 1896, my grandfather) were both born in Jersey City. In 1900 they lived at 514 West 29th Street, Manhattan. TAB was listed as a bookkeeper. In 1920 they lived at Bay 10th Street, Brooklyn with his family and Francis E's family too. TAB is described as an accountant now. In the 1930 census the family lives at 1317 East 4th Street in Brooklyn. Ellen is the head of household and has two sons, Chas (Charles) and George, and her daughter Beatrice living with her, as well as her daughter-in-law and her son: Grace (George's wife) and George Jr.

I hope this helps shed some light on the family history. If you have details, such as names, birth places and dates of some of your family, I would be interested in adding those to my family tree. We live in Bath in the west of England and it's not really all that far away.

I've been trying to get my hands on a photo of Ellen and TAB and their kids that my cousin Diane Brady Losche has (another of TAB's great granddaughters). She lives in Sydney, Australia and probably finds it easy to ignore my requests from so far away.
