I am searching for family possible related to Joe Cokers family. Possibly a more distant family member. i believe my Dicey /Dicy Coker comes from a connectin line to his family. She is b. abt 1833/34 in Arkansas adn Dicy may have just been a nickmname for something else. Our But, she wound up getting married in 1852 in Pope Co, Arkansas listed age 18. So, b. abt 1933/34 era. Our family says her husband got her straight off reservation lands, and she was of Indian Descent.. Upper Arkansas was back at the time of her birth very much Indian lands still. The bit Coker family there, lived in Choctaw Territory. Although claiming not to be Indian themselves, except for Joseph who married 2 Indian women. Teh Cherokee and Choctaw in the area battled alot for this land. So, high Indian presence in this area.
Can anyone tell me if my Dicey/Dicy is related to Joe Cokers relatives. We would love to complete this line, and know what happened to her. Some say she died in childbirth, some day she ran off and returned to her family, and husb. claimed she died. Who knows. But, we as her descendents would love to know the truth. And to know what tribe she was affliated with, Choctaw, or Cherokee or perhaps something else. (her grandaughter I come from looks very much part Indian.)

I am looking for the father of Robert T. Coker, born Feb. 14, 1797 in Laurens, SC. He married in Bibb co., Al in 1820 to a Mary Williams. They had children in Al and in Ms. where they were living around 1835. Died in Hinds Co, Ms. in 1857. Had near-by relatives that had a son named Robert B. Coker (Bernard). Would like to share info.
Email me at chrlscoker@suddenlink.net That stands for "Charles Coker" without the vowels. Some people think it stands for "Chris" but that's wrong. Hope to hear from you. Gwen Coker
From all I've read (message boards, Turnbo's tales, Marion Co, AR genealogy web site), I am inclined to believe that my Cokers may be descended from this line but I have been unable to document a connection. My great-grandfather, George W. Coker, lived in Yellville, Marion Co., AR until around 1909 when the family moved to Joplin, MO. He was married to the former Anna Stinnett. His sister, Lettie Coker, married Thomas Stinnett, and another sister, Lizzie/Elizabeth Coker, married Tom and Anna's brother, John Stinnett.

George's death certificate only provides his mother's name - Margaret Weast. Lettie's d/c has Margaret Weast as her mother and George W Coker as her father.

I am interested in Joseph Coker not only because of his connection with Native American women but also because one of the histories said he had children by an African American housekeeper. Oral family history claims black, Native and white blood on the Coker side; and white and Native on the Stinnett side.

I would be interested in contacting anyone else who is pursuing this line of inquiry or who could provide more pointers that would lead me to more definitive information.

Thanks,
Joyce Coker

Do you have a Coker blacksmith in your lineage? Perhaps in Shelby County or even that Coker Island? Don't you all have a Coker Island in Tennessee?

My Coker g-g-g-g or some 'g' was sent to the Indians in middle TN possibly c. 1815-1838 to civilize the Indians and show them how to make implements for farming, etc.

My line of Cokers are from the male gene from TN. London Coker is direct relative to this day. Hearsay is that his father was Alec, Alex or something like that.

Would this be in your researching activities?

Alfreda:
We hve searched all this, we do not find a Leonard Coker in Pope Co, or any othr record that shows Dicey there at all. Our family says she died in Childirth. Others say she may have just left John Goates and went back to her family. No proof either way, as there is not death Certificate or burial found for her at all in Pope Co. So she still reminas our mystery. The only thing we can ever find is her marriage on the County Index at the Historical Society there in Pope Co. ( I already had a relative go there and get this record for me, so I have that) No other reord can be found on her at all. Sh eis not even on the census with John as they married in 1852 and she was gone bef. 1860. He remarried soon after to his 3rd wife.

Hi, I am researching the Coker family in Florida. My husband's GGGrandmother was Nannie Coker Forbes, born about 1849 in GA. Don't know when her family came to FL. Her husband RB Forbes lived in FL when they married. I believe the met in FL. Have hit dead-end at every turn where she is concerned. Can't identify her parents as of yet. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Dana Forbes
RE: Dicey Coker
Linda (View posts) Posted: 27 May 2000 8:15PM GMT
Classification:
Surnames:
Dear Renda, The best advice that I can tell you to do is go to familysearch.com and register in the Coker email loop, add your name to the list to receive e-mail and what you'll get is all the e-mails and messages from all of the people doing research on the Dicey Coker line.
The info that I have on Dicey is:
Dicey married John L.Goats in 1852.
She was 18 when they married, that makes her birth year 1834.
She had 3 children, the last one is 1858 and then she might have died because she doesn't show up on the 1860 census.
Her wedding cert, says she was from Pope Co. Arkansas.
This info is from Myrna is Washington state.
(from familysearch.com)
Her father might have been Leonard Coker in Pope County.
That's about all I can help you with, but if you post on the other web site, lots of people with Coker info(unfortunately not my info!) will write you back. It all goes through their computer, but the messages will get e-mail right to your house.

Hope this helps, Linda

{PS-this matches your info., but not the TENN part. Maybe this can help. This was posted in 2000.}

Since my family can't seem to find the family of my woman they claimed was of Indian heritage, I wonder if she could have been form this line. My woman is called Dicey Coker. Dicey may have been a nickname for the real name. She was b. 1833-1834. My family says in TN (even though one who could also amtch b. AR) No one has been able to find who her family is, but, one thing for sure they came from TN. This is either where she or her family were born.
My ancestors all say however she was an Indian, and no AR Cokers seem to claim her as theirs. She did marry in 1852 however in Pope Co, AR. She was gone either by death or desertion of her husb by 1860. ( The area she lived in was very mcuh Indian Terriatory or where they had migrated to downstate after they were run off the lands in S. Missouri and N. Arkansas earlier. My family lived along the Arkansas River and White River areas of AR. after this move.)
By the way you can find many Coker names also on the Cherokee Dawes Rolls! Who did they come from???

James M. Coker and Rachel McFetridge were married on Oct. 4, 1860 in Jefferson Co. IN. By this date, they very well could have been the parents of Isom Coker who was born about 1863. I have a copy of his death from the Madison Courier but it doesn't contain much information. It does say that he was 75 years old when he died on July 16, 1938 so that would mean he was born around 1863. I also have a copy of the obituary of Isom's second wife Cora George Coker who died on July 30, 1957. I believe they are both buried at New Bethel Cemetery in Jefferson Co. IN. Contrary to what it states in Isom Coker, Jr.'s obituary, his mother was Cora George Coker. I'm not sure where the family got the name Tabitha but his mother's name is listed as Cora on all the records I have been able to locate.

Several years ago I read about a Coker man who was placed by the gov't for the Indian's 'cultivation' and knowledge of being civilized.
This was a non-Indian (white), who met up with an Indian wife in the same vicinity and either the couple or their off-spring migrated to Indian Territory. To my recollection, it was about 1815-1818.
This is where we get the name 'Coker' among the Seminole and Creek Indians at least in Oklahoma.

If anyone in webville knows of this and/or has Cokers from middle TN., Please let me know!

Thank you so much for sharing the names and copies of the wills. This is very intriguing, because some of the family members I'm researching are: Daniel, Benjamin, James and Joseph. I will start researching the names in Will. I am so excited! I think our surname "Coger" evolved over time. I do believe "Coker" is the original surname. I have found them in each census since 1870. Each census survey has their names spelled different (Coker, Cogger, Coger, Cogar). I believe this was due to my family's illiteracy. Census enumerators spelled the names for them, thus the variations.
John Coker, son of John Coker of Jamestown, was born in James City in about 1635. He is noted as purchasing 400 acres in 1657 in Surry County. John married Margaret Allen Clay ca 1660 probably in Surry Co.and had known son, William. Margaret is possibly the daughter of William Allen of James City who arrived to Jamestown in 1623 as a servant and was listed in Charles City in the 1624 census

John Coker was born around 1600 in Somersetshire, England. He was in Jamestown for the 1624 census. He married Dorothea Bishopp who was probably born in England. John died in James City in 1655. John and Dorothea had the following children: John, Ann, Flower and William

Found in Early Colonial Virginia Records

No, I don't have any information in Florida about Coker plantations. The surname spelled Coger is not usually a variant for the surname Coker but maybe in your case. Some of the descendants of Benjamin and Elizabeth Coker of Barnwell, South Carolina migrated to Florida. Their grandson Joseph Coker died in 1856 in Alachua County. I am attaching copies of the wills of Benjamin and his wife Elizabeth. These are typed transcripts probably done by the WPA project during President Franklin Roosevelt's tenure.

These images of the wills were divided for another website and rather than rescan I am sending the parts.
