From all I've read (message boards, Turnbo's tales,
Marion Co, AR genealogy web site), I am inclined to believe that my Cokers may be descended from this line but I have been unable to document a connection. My great-grandfather, George W. Coker, lived in Yellville,
Marion Co., AR until around 1909 when the family moved to
Joplin, MO. He was married to the former Anna
Stinnett. His sister, Lettie
Coker, married Thomas
Stinnett, and another sister, Lizzie/Elizabeth
Coker, married Tom and Anna's brother, John
Stinnett.
George's death certificate only provides his mother's name - Margaret
Weast. Lettie's d/c has Margaret
Weast as her mother and George W
Coker as her father.
I am interested in Joseph
Coker not only because of his connection with Native American women but also because one of the histories said he had children by an African American housekeeper. Oral family history claims black, Native and white blood on the
Coker side; and white and Native on the
Stinnett side.
I would be interested in contacting anyone else who is pursuing this line of inquiry or who could provide more pointers that would lead me to more definitive information.
Thanks,
Joyce
