I don't know if there is any relationship, but your history to Joseph Coker sounds alot like a story my mother heard growing up. Her father was a George Arthur Coker, his father was named Joseph. Wondering if there is a connection. My grandfather George A. Coker had brothers named: Willie(William),John, Joe(Joseph) Christoper, Bob(Robert)James, and sisters named: Margie, Ida, Pearl, and Demaris. They were raised in the Lowery, Arkansas area. Any connections?

One of my (3) great-grandfather's was George Coker (born 1800's I believe) and he married Rhoda Clark. Have you come across any information about them in your search?

Cynthia Rogers/Dempsey Fields Coker

Can I ask where you got the information that Cynthia Coker was a white woman? Joseph F Coker was married to a white woman but I don't think it was Cynthia Rogers. She was the daughter of Captain John Rogers, Jr. He was a Chief of the Western Cherokees. She is listed on the Old Settler's Roll and most of her children were on the Dawes Rolls.
Dempsey Fields was her son and they are enumerated together on the 1880 Cherokee Nation census.
Could you give me your sources for your information?

My ggg grandmother Francis was married 3 times that we know of. First to an UNKNOWN Tope. They had 2 children,Mary Ann, b 1838 and James b 1840. Evidently the Tope husband died, because in 1842 Francis gave birth to John M.Moore. Father unknown. By 1845 she was married to Swanson Yarbrough and living in Texas. All 3 children were born in Arkansas. (Hempstead and Pulaski) Swanson's previous wife was Cynthia. Family history has it that Francis and Cynthia were sisters and their maiden name was Coker. I also suspect that they had Cherokee in their family history. We think Francis and Cynthia were born about 1810 to 1813. Does any of this seem to fit into the Coker you are researching. Any help would be appreciated.

Will someone please help me? I am trying to research my g-grandmother's genealogy. The only things that I know are, her father's name was James Thompson Coker, he married Elizabeth Mahalia Boyd, and at some time they lived in Amity, Arkansas. From what I understand, my g-grandmother was born in Fannin County, TX around 1898. They eventually moved to Jones County, TX. My grandmother told me that they boarded up their house in Arkansas and moved to Texas because one of them was sick. I have also been told that we have Indian blood in our family, I was wondering if it came from this part of the family.
Thanks, Kary

I read about Buck and his son Joseph coker, because I'm related to some Cokers that live in Oregon. Family lost touch along time ago. My grandmother Rena's family on my mom's side. Rena said her mother, who died when she was about three years old, had a certain degree of Indian blood in her and her picture shows she looks a little bit Indian about half. I'm not sure but my dad said we might be related to a Nave also, but way back. I want to get the DNA test done someday.MY mom was often referred to as an Indian throw- back and has some subbtle traits of African American blood, that have even been pointed out by African Americans over the years. And even know my skin is white and my eyes are blue, I was told by an Africa American hair dresser that I have some black in me, she was going through my hair, she said she could see it in the texture of my hair, which texture I've had since the teen years. I've known her for a long time ,I told her that wasn't a shock to me,but I thought it came from Rena's husbands side who was an American born French Canadian, surename ,Jacobs

Surnames: COKER STINNETT
From all I've read (message boards, Turnbo's tales, Marion Co, AR genealogy web site), I am inclined to believe that my Cokers may be descended from this line but I have been unable to document a connection. My great-grandfather, George W. Coker, lived in Yellville, Marion Co., AR until around 1909 when the family moved to Joplin, MO. He was married to the former Anna Stinnett. His sister, Lettie Coker, married Thomas Stinnett, and another sister, Lizzie/Elizabeth Coker, married Tom and Anna's brother, John Stinnett.

George's death certificate only provides his mother's name - Margaret Weast. Lettie's d/c has Margaret Weast as her mother and George W Coker as her father.

I am interested in Joseph Coker not only because of his connection with Native American women but also because one of the histories said he had children by an African American housekeeper. Oral family history claims black, Native and white blood on the Coker side; and white and Native on the Stinnett side.

I would be interested in contacting anyone else who is pursuing this line of inquiry or who could provide more pointers that would lead me to more definitive information.

Thanks,
Joyce Coker
