Chase, Samuel. 1741-1811. American statesman, jurist, lawyer, b. Princess Anne, Somerset Co., Md.
Delegate to the Continental Congress, Maryland, 1774-1778, 1784-1785; signer of the Declaration of Independence; named to the Supreme Court, 1796; impeached by the House of Representatives in 1804 for "high-handed conduct," but acquitted by the U.S. Senate in 1805; remained on the Court until his death in 1811.
