Delegate to the Continental Congress, Maryland, 1774-1778, 1784-1785; signer of the Declaration of Independence; named to the Supreme Court, 1796; impeached by the House of Representatives in 1804 for "high-handed conduct," but acquitted by the U.S. Senate in 1805; remained on the Court until his death in 1811.

I am not related to this person, I am just passing on this information, which comes from a book titled "People & Events of the American Revolution" by Dupuy/Hammerman. R.R. Bowker Company, 1974. pg.301.

Thank you for posting this information and the source. I would appreciate any further information as I have known I am a direct decendant of this Samuel Chase via oral history and research of our service of ancestry by my grandmother, Edith Lyle Chase Krause, daughter of Marcus B. Chase in Marion, Ohio

Robin--

Any idea if any of Samuel Chase's descendants ended up in Charles, St. Mary's, Calvert or Prince George's County, MD? Family tradition has it that we're related to him, but we haven't been able to establish a clear link. There are also 3 generations in a row from which I descend where the first and middle names of the daughters are Isabella Chase, so I'm wondering if the family tradition does have some truth to it. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Vicki

Vicki,

I found census records showing Samuel Chase lived in Maryland before moving to Washington DC. Thus I would assume other Chases may have lived in the areas you asked about. Reading the messages posted about Walter Chase might be another clue. I will look into them to see if I can find some relationship answers using that information. I noticed one message had a Chase family move to Tennessee. That may be the route followed by the Chases I'm researching from Ohio. There is also a Solomon P. Chase from Ohio in my family's oral history to whom we are related. He held a couple government appointments in Washington during the same time period as Samuel Chase. I'd like to communicate with you further. Some of my Chase relatives came from New York as well. I have photograph's of the parents of my great grandfather, Marcus B. Chase that were taken in Brooklyn. His father was David Chase per the ID info he penned at the bottom of the original photo.

Hi Robin--

Thanks for your quick reply. I also noticed in some other boards that there was a reference to a Salmon P. Chase (perhaps it was a typographical error somewhere along the line) who also served on the Supreme Court, I think, and as part of one of the Presidents' cabinets during the same time period that Samuel Chase was in politics.

Thanks again for your reply, and if I find anything that relates to Solomon, I'll be sure to pass it along.
Vicki

Robin--

Here's some info I found online re: a Salmon P. Chase, but not Solomon P. Chase. He also came along awhile after Samuel Chase, but I thought it may help you out anyway.

Hi Vicki,

Thanks to you as well for your prompt reply. Give me a week of so to catch up from family stuff, and I will check the info I have on Samuel Chase and relatives with you. Your information is very helpful. Perhaps we might make personal contact to share our information. My e-mail is: rbfox2@aol.com. My cousin, who shares the Chase lineage, and my brother are assisting me in putting our geneology together in an acceptable format with appropriate verifications of the information as I locate it. Each new piece of information is so exciting when discovered. (It can become overwhelming as well, I've discovered, if everything is not carefully organized.

Thank you ever so much for these two sources. I was not aware of them. I have a copy of the "Service of Ancestry of Edith Chase Krause", my maternal grandmother who compiled significant information of her family's background back to William Erwin who service in the Revolutionary War from Monmouth, NJ, receiving a pension at about age 75. Related to Wm. Erwin were others of historical significance in Ohio including some LaRue family who settled and named LaRue, Ohio. She shared the oral history with us about Samuel Chase, Solmon(Solomon P?) Chase, Samuel Hopkins whom she said we decended from as well. Clearly the Chases , of whom there is much research and confusion over who decended from whom and who is a decendant of which Chase, moved around a great deal further complicating the process of verifying which ones to whom we actually are related. I haven't even checked the Chase site at LRoots yet. I look forward to sharing more specifics with you in the near future. Good luck on your quest. Robin (rbfox2@aol.com)
