I have a Martha Ann Carnahan born March 15, 1844 in Arkansas with Father born in Kentucky and Mother born in Tennessee according to the 1900 Texas census. Does anyone know if she is the daughter of Benjamin Young Carnahan and Hopestell Hardister? A Martha A Carnahan is listed with AB Taylor and a Hopestea? on the 1850 Marion Co Arkansas census, along with her brothers and sisters, Samuel, Green, Sarah, George Elisabeth, David and a Mary A Taylor. My Martha A Carnahan was in Texas in 1876 and married Isaac Hamilton Jan 9, 1876 in Cleburne City Johnson County Texas. She named one of her children Hope and another Benjamin. I have also found a David W. Carnahan and Marhta J Jones in Johnson County Texas with a daughter born there named Hopie D Carnahan in 1874 and a son named John O Carnahan born in 1876. I believe David W Carnahan is Martha's brother as listed on the 1850 Marion County Arkansas census as well as Benjamin and Hopestell's son and daughter. Can anyone help with this family and this connection?

Hi Linda ( I think that is your name...<g>)
You may be on to something here. That would really be nice if this works out.

Martha A. Carnahan - daughter of Benjamin Young Carnahan and Hopestell Hardister is in the 1850 census of Marion Co., Arkansas as age 7, the 1860 census of Taney Co., Missouri as age 15, and then she is listed with her mother in 1870 in Boone Co., Arkansas as age 26. We haven't found her after that.
So... your Martha who shows up in Texas in 1876 might work.
The age and state of birth, and middle initial all sure match quite well, don't they.

Here is what I have collected on your Martha Ann Carnahan.
Some of it is a bit confusing but maybe we can figure it out..<g>.

First of all - the 1870 census - Beat #1, Johnson Co., Texas shows Isaac Hamilton, age 30 with wife Rebecca, age 30 and children William (age 14), Fritz (12), Frank (12), Bettie (5), Jimmie (3), and John (3/12)

Then the 1880 census of Precinct #1, Stephens Co., Texas has this listing:
Hamilton, Isaac - 38 - md - farmer - Ill-Ky-Ky
Martha A. - 37 - wife - md - keeping house - Ark-Ky-Tn
James M. - 11 - son - s - at home - Tx-Ill-Ark
Toby J. - 9 - son - s - Tx-Ill-Ark
Theeta - 7 - daughter - s - Tx-Ill-Ark
Ella May - 3 - daughter - s - Tx-Ill-Ark
Benj. M. - 1 - son - s - Tx-Ill-Ark
So Isaac was married 1st to Rebecca. It looks as if in this listing Ella May and Benj. M. were probably the children of Isaac and Martha A. and the rest were children of Isaac and Rebecca.

1900 Census - Precinct #2, Floyd Co., Texas
Hamilton, Isaac - head - Jan 1841 - 59 - md 24 yrs - Ill-Ky-?? - farmer
Martha A. - wife - Mar 1844 - 46 - md 24 yrs - 7/7 - Ark-Ky-Tn
Benjamin M. - son - Dec 1878 - 21 - s - Tx-Ill-Ark - stock herder
Sanford - son - Nov 1880 - 19 - s - Tx-Ill-Ark - farm laborer
Hopie E. - daughter - Sept 1882 - 17 - s - Tx-Ill-Ark - at school
Maud - dauguter - Dec 1883 - 16 - s - Tx-Ill-Ark - at school
Lillie P. - daughter - July 1886 - 13 - s - Tx-Ill-Ark - at school
Cora E. - daughter - Sept 1889 - 10 - s - Tx-Ill-Ark - at school

1910 Census - Lockney, Floyd Co., Texas
Hamilton, Martha A. - head - 66 - wd - 7/7 - Ark-Ky-Tn - own income
Cora - daughter - 20 - s - Tx-Ill-Ark - teaching public school

1920 - Census - Lockney, Floyd Co., Texas
Hamilton, M. A. - head - 75 - wd - US-US-US
Bailey (except is isn't Bailey just sort of looks that way), W. H. - son-in-law - 28 - md - Nep-Germany-US - carpenter
Cora - daughter - 30 - md - Tx-Mo-Ark
Cheryl - daughter - 3 ?/12 - s - Tx-Neb-Tx
Kenneth - son - ?/?? - s - Tx-Neb-Tx

Ok... I think I had better start another message.
Take care - Emma

Ok... continuing...

Remember that 1920 census:
1920 - Census - Lockney, Floyd Co., Texas
Hamilton, M. A. - head - 75 - wd - US-US-US
Bailey (except is isn't Bailey just sort of looks that way), W. H. - son-in-law - 28 - md - Nep-Germany-US - carpenter
Cora - daughter - 30 - md - Tx-Mo-Ark
Cheryl - daughter - 3 ?/12 - s - Tx-Neb-Tx
Kenneth - son - ?/?? - s - Tx-Neb-Tx

Well... his name isn't Bailey, it is Bybee
the 1930 census of Precinct #2, Floyd Co., Texas shows:
Bybee, Walter - head - 42 - md age 22 - Ark-Tn-Tn - farmer
Cora - wife - 40 - md age 20 - Tx-Mo-Ark
Oscar - son - 18 - s - Tx-Ark-Tx
Juanita - daughter - 16 - s - Tx-Ark-Tx
Cheryl - daughter - 13 - s - Tx-Ark-Tx
Cora - daughter - 8 - s - Rx-Ark-Tx
Now... this gets interesting. If Oscar and Juanita really are children of Walter and Cora then why weren't they listed in 1920. Could they be children of a relative who are now living with Walter and Cora? Or were they left out of the 1920 for come reason?

Additional bits and pieces:
Cora Edna Hamilton Bybee - b. 28 Sept 1889 Texas - d. 18 July 1971 Plainview, Hale Co., Texas - buried Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Hale Co., Texas

Walter Bybee - b. 15 Dec 1886 - d. 24 Sept 1970 in Plainview, Hale Co., Texas - buried Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Hale Co., Texas

Texas birth records indicate that Walter and Cora also had these children:
Walter Bybee - b. 28 May 1928 in Floyd Co., Texas. He is listed as infant of which usually means that he did not live much beyond birth or was born dead.
Bennie Jean Bybee - b. 3 May 1931 in Floyd Co., Texas

Also, Juanita Bybee md Bennie Ronald Teaff and they had a son Ronald Melvin Teaff b. 9 May 1932 in Floyd Co., Texas.

Ok... will start new message.
Hope some of this is helping - take care - Emma

Now... back up to the 1910 census in Lockney, Floyd Co., Texas
Hamilton, Martha A. - head - 66 - wd - 7/7 - Ark-Ky-Tn - own income
Cora - daughter - 20 - s - Tx-Ill-Ark - teaching public school

In the very next household there is this family:
Ewing, Floyd F. - head - 34(?), md1 - 8 yrs - Mo-Ky-Mo - salesman hardware
Hopie - wife - 27 - md1 - 8 yrs - 5/2 - Tx-Ill-Ark
Maurice - son - 3 - s - Tx-Mo-Tx
Ethel - daughter - 1 11/12 - s - Tx-Ill-Ark

I need to search this family in 1920 and 1930 but I figure this is Hope E. Hamilton - daughter of Isaac Hamilton and Martha A. Carnahan.

Take care - Emma

As for the other children of Benjamin Young Carnahan and Hopestell Hardister several of them did move to Texas. So it is quite possible that Hopestell died soon after the 1870 census and Martha A. move to Texas as well.

I don't have a lot on David Carnahan - son of Benjamin Young Carnahan but I do have this:
David Carnahan md Martha Jane Jones on 29 Nov 1873 in Boone Co., Arkansas
1880 census - Georgetown, Williamson Co., Texas
Carnahan, D. W. - 31 - md - farming - Ark-Tn-Tn
M. J. - 20 - wife - md - keeping house - Ark-Ark-Ark
J. O. - 3 - son - s - Tx-Ark-Ark
H. D. - 5 - daughter - s - Tx-Ark-Ark

1900 census - Gainesville, Cooke Co., Texas
Carnahan, David W. - head - Dec 1847 - 52 - md 27 yrs - Mo-Mo-Mo - peddler
M. J. - wife - Apr 1858 - 42 - md 27 yrs - 6/5 - Ark-Ark-Ala
Carrie - daughter - Oct 1879 - 20 - s - Tx-Mo-Ark - clerk drug store
Charlie - son - Oct 1882 - 17 - s - Tx-Mo-Ark - at school
Armsted - son - Dec 1884 - 15 - s - Tx-Mo-Ark - at school
Cunningham, Kittie - niece - Oct 1885 - 14 - s - Indian Territory-Ky-Ark - at school

1910 - Census - Gainesville, Cooke Co., Texas
Carnahan, David - head - 62 - md1 - 37 yrs - Mo-Mo-Mo - trader stock
Martha - wife - 52 - md 37 yrs - 7/5 - Ark-Ark-Ala

1920 - census - Gainesville, Cooke Co., Texas
Carnahan, Martha J. - head - 63 - md - Ark-Va-Ala
David W. - husband - 72 - md - Ark-Ark-Ark

Hope this helps a bit and sure would appreciate any additonal information and/or corrections on anything I have sent.
Take care - Emma

Hi there,

I don't know yet who Cora's parents were.

Carnahan, George W. - father-in-law - 73 - wd - Ark-Ky-Tn - farmer

Have a bit more census info. for George William's children if anyone is interested.

Again... please - additional information and corrections would really be appreciated.
Take care - Emma

And now for Green S. Carnahan - son of Benjamin Young Carnahan.

He too is rather interesting.

In the 1860 census he is in Marion Co., Arkansas listed as age 24, farmer, b. Arkansas. He is living with the James M. Davidson family.

Then... in 1870 he is in Beat #5, Lamar Co., Texas in this listing:
Mackey, W. R. - 40 - farmer - Ala
M. E. F. - 33 - keeping house - Tn
Prescott, J. F. - 17 - Tx
Wright, W. J. - 15 - Tx
L. P. - 14 - Tx
L. F. - 12 - Tx
Nixon, A. B. - 8 - Tx
T. G. - 4 - Tx
Roberson, Elizabeth - 26 - SC
Carnahan, G. S. - 34 - widow - farmer - Ark.
Note that he is listed as widow.....

Then in 1880 he is in Precinct #6, Lamar Co., Texas
Carnahan, Green S. - 44 - md - farmer - Ark-Tn-Tn
Arminda - 38 - wife - md - housekeeping - Ala-Ky-Ky
Jo. D. - 6 - son - s - Tx-Ark-Ala
William A. - 3 - son - s - Tx-Ark-Ala
Rosa Ann - 8/12 - Oct - daughter - Tx-Ark-Ala

1900 - Census - Precinct #6, Lamar Co., Texas
Carnahan, Green - head - Oct 1835 - 64 - md 30 yrs - Ark-Tn-Tn - farmer
Arminda P. - wife - Jan 1841 - 58 - md 30 yrs - 7/4 - Ala-Ky-Ky

And in 1910 in Precinct #6, Lamar Co., Texas
Carnahan, William - head - 32 - md1 - 0 yrs - Tx-Ark-Ala - farmer
Ema - wife - 20 - md1 - 0 yrs - Tx-Mo-Ark
Green - father - 74 - div - Ark-tn-Tn - farm laborer

1910 - 3 rd ward, Paris, Lamar Co., Texas
Echols, Fate - head - 51 - md1 - 29 yrs - Tn-SC-Va - operates elevator crate factory
Dora - wife - 49 - md1 - 29 yrs - 7/5 - Tx-Ala-Ala
Ray - son - 20 - s - Tx-Tn-Tx - ???? crate factory
May - daughter - 17 - s - Tx-Tn-Tx
Rose Ella - daughter - 12 - s- Tx-Tn-Tx
Vida - daughter - 10 - s - Tx-Tn-Tx
Carnahan, Arminda - mother-in-law - 71 - wd/d - Ala-Ala-Ala
Apparently Arminda first indicated widow and then changed it to divorced.
Now... this census brings up lots of questions.
The 1900 census shows this Dora as being born in Nov 1860. Green Carnahan was in Missouri in 1860 and not married. So I figure this Dora was a daughter of Arminda by a 1st marriage.

Does anyone know who Green Carnahan might have married 1st?

Take care - Emma

Hi Darrell,
Charolette just reminded me about this.

Benjamin Young Carnahan - son of John Carnahan and Jane/Janet Billingsley isn't the one who died in Cornith, Ms.
At least it would appear that way.
Benjamin F. Carnahan - son of Adam Carnahan and Rebecca Landers died in Corinth, Mississippi in 1864.
Could these have gotten mixed up or can you help us with info. on the death of Benjamin Young Carnahan.
Thanks and take care - Emma
