These families are both in Canton, Michigan at the time of the 1850 census. There is also a Peter Britton b. 1799 in New York m. Cornelia (surname unknown) living in Canton, Michigan in 1850. I am trying to determine whether Peter is a brother of Fanny and Mary. Thanks for any information.

Karen Dickerson Miller

I see that you have info on George Washington Britton,I am researching my ggrandmother Laura Ellsworth Britton.Laura was born in New York but her daughter told a book writer that her mother from Kankakee,Illinois and was born abt 1862 the reason being is Laura was a foundling from New York and she may have been on the orphan train to Illinois and that the New York assylum did not change names and tried to get them to relatives if they could.I know that my grandma had an aunt that lived in Illinois in the early 1960's,I am thinking George and his family may of been Laura's somehow to,do you know of the Britton's taking in an orphan from New York?Possibly a related one? There is a Laura Brittin but was told that they didn't know enough to say.Oh yeah I think George Washington the father with E F Malory(Glasscock) the mother, unless this my Laura.

This is Family Group 2 in the Britton International DNA Project. Known ancestors of the Group are John Britton bc 1767 and George Brittain Sr. bc 1742. A number of representatives of this line have already been tested; they belong to Haplogroup I1-Norse, indicating Viking ancestry. The family first appears in southside VA in the second half of the 18th century, but there is a tradition that they lived either in Maryland or another part of VA before this time.

Lindsey Britton, Administrator of the Britton DNA Projects
LPlantagenet@AOL.com
L

The Britton International DNA Projects run at Ancestry, Family Tree, and DNA Heritage. There is no cost or purchase required for membership in the project at Ancestry, and Ancestry offers a 33 marker test for only $79.

If you already have DNA results from another company, you may enter them in Ancestry's database at no charge. If the other company was Family Tree or DNA Heritage, then you are also eligible to join the Britton project at Family Tree or DNA Heritage.

Our website at World Families contains DNA results drawn from all three projects and other online databases:

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/britton/home

DNA testing can determine whether two men with the same surname share a common ancestor within a genealogical or historical timeframe and is one of the fastest and easiest ways to find distant cousins who may be able to help you fill in the gaps of your family history.

Dr. Lindsey Britton, Administrator of the Britton DNA Projects at Ancestry, DNA Heritage, and Family Tree
LPlantagenet@AOL.com
You don't have to subscribe or purchase a DNA test in order to join, but if you are interested in DNA testing, Ancestry offers a 33 marker test at a very attractive price.

So far we have DNA results for one man whose family has ancient roots in West Yorkshire, and the closest DNA match for my Britton family is the Childers family which was living in Leeds, Yorkshire in the 16th century.

Dr. Lindsey Britton, Administrator of the Britton DNA Projects at Ancestry, DNA Heritage, and Family Tree

Could this tradition of the Irish of children being born out of wedlock my road block?? I am searching for my Great Grandmother Laura Ellsworth Britton B;abt 1862 in Kankakee,Illinois is what I am told.I have searched Britton to no end and cannot figure why someone would name their daughter ELLSWORTH?I have also tried Laura Ellsworth as well and nothing,I tried Ellsworth because I know nothing of her until she migrates to Montana with another woman when she is 26 years old.Weren't most women of that time married already? So I thought she married an Ellsworth and was widowed or it didn't work out or something.Or that she was an Ellsworth and married a Britton and still nothing or nothing that jumps out.

It's been several years since any of us have exchanged information in regards to our McNairy Co and Hardin Co, TN
BRITTON ancestors. I have recent information I would be glad to share. I am researching Parks BRITTON and his father William BRITTON b. abt 1795 KY died in Hardin Co, TN. Some of you are descended from William's 1st wife, Nancy 'Patsy' SPAIN/D SPAIN/DISPAIN and some of you are descended from wife #2 Mary Ann PATTERSON. To date I have not progressed beyond old William, though I have always thought he was the son of Levi BRITTAIN X Nancy DANIELS.
I'd enjoy corresponding with you in hopes we could trade up to date research findings!
Jackey

Mary Ann Gates Britton is buried in Hillsdale - she was the former (divorced) wife of Leonard Britton, who was quite rascal. Nothing in your post has jumped out at me quite yet, but I thought I'd let you know I'm working on it. My ggrandmother is Florence Mable BRITTON.

Britton/Britten/Brittain NY to Hillsdale and St. Joseph Co. MI to IL

My Britton brick wall is my gg-grandfather, John Britton (Britten, Brittain). He was born in NY sometime between 1814 and 1823 (approx. year of birth different acc. to census records, marriage certificate, and census mortality schedule).

John married Elmira (aka Almira, Alminda) Wilder (aka Wyldson) on Feb. 18, 1842, in Hillsdale Co., MI (marriage cert.). She’s always listed as having been born in Ohio; I haven’t been able to find any record of her before her marriage to John.

John and Elmira’s children were Lucy J. (m. Golden), Mary Ann (“Annie”; m. Sherman], Alonzo H., Charles H., Jairus Parker, and William). All were b. in MI, between 1843 and 1860.

John and Elmira were in Pittsford Twp. on the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Between 1860 and 1861 they moved to Galva, Henry Co., IL, where John died in Sept. 1879 (“killed by a horse” acc. to the 1880 census mortality schedule).

Someone named Dolly Barret (Banet?), age 67, b. NY, is listed with them on the 1850 census. I have no idea who she was, but perhaps Elmira’s mother had remarried and had come to live with them. Abigail Brittain, b. ca 1787 in NJ, is listed with them on the 1860 census. Just to compound the confusion, there’s a John R. Britten family in Pittsford Twp. on the 1850 census with an Abigail in the household, b ca 1770 NJ, and an Abram Britten (b. 1792 NY) with an Abigail in the household (not his wife), b. ca 1783 NY.

All the Brittens I could find listed on the 1850 census for Pittsford Twp., MI, are Jacob, John R., Richard R., another Richard, Nathaniel, and Abram. I know I can’t assume my John is related to any of the other Brittons in Pittsford, but it was a small town and they all came from NY, so it certainly seems possible. I’d love to know which one(s), if any!

Have any of you researched these Hillsdale/St. Joseph County Brittons? Does anyone know where in NY my John Britton came from and/or who his father was? Or if he was related to any of the other Brittons of Hillsdale or St. Joseph County?

Another mystery is the name of John Britton’s second-youngest son, my great-grandfather: Jairus (spelled Jarius, Jerris, Jerius, Jervis on various documents) Parker Britton, b. MI, October 1855. On the 1845 MI census there’s a Jairus Parker (from NY) and Jairus Parker, Jr., in Sturgis, MI, and the 1860 US census lists a Jairus Parker, 67, b. NY, in White Pigeon with his wife Sarah (nee Whaley, b MA). Family tradition has it that Jairus was b. in White Pigeon.

I can’t find a connection between these Parkers and my Brittons, but it would seem they might be related or connected by marriage. Or maybe John Britton admired Jairus Parker so much that he named his son after him. I understand that in some cultures (e.g., Irish) children born out of wedlock were named after the father even if the mother didn’t marry him, but since Jairus was John and Elmira’s 5th child, that seems unlikely.

Sorry this is so long, but I figure the more info I provide, the easier it will be for others to see if we have a connection. Thanks in advance for any help or clues anyone can give me.

Today is my dad’s 90th birthday, and I’m posting this in his honor. He’s the one who started me on this family history journey when he started researching the Brittons the old-fashioned way (pre-Internet) back in the early 70s.
My GG-grandmother lived in Charlestown, Massachusetts while in college, which I believe was in what's now Boston.
Peter Britton in Canton, Wayne Co., Michigan 1840 Census

Does anyone know anything about this family? I suspect this Peter Britton may be a brother or other close relative of my ancestor Fannie Britton who married William Hannan. William and Fannie came to Michigan via the Erie Canal and were also in Canton, Wayne Co. at the time of the 1840 U.S. census.
