I am interested in this information you have. My Briggs family originated in Connecticut and then lived in Rhode Island. My GGGrandfather Richard Briggs was born in Connecticut in the early 1800's. I have been searching for his parents. His wife was Susan born in Rhode Island. Any help would be appreciated.

I will take some photos outside when it stops raining and email them to you. (The photos taken inside didn't come out). There was another quilt with this one that was obviously quilted by the same person. It is a red center medallion quilt made for a period four poster bed. I would love to id who the quilter was, she was very skilled! I'll be happy to share the info I have. Do you know when and where Alfred Wesley Briggs Jr. and Hannah Hill where born? The Hannah Hill who signed the quilt is Hannah C (maiden name Durfee). She married Christopher Hill and they lived in Fall River Mass in 1850. My email is clarkewk@aol.com

Gardiner Susan Gardner Hannah Briggs Mary Johnson RI

I'm researching a signature quilt signed in the 1850's. Looking for how Susan (middle initial E or C) Gardner is related. Hannah Briggs, (maiden name Shippee, wife of Joseph P Briggs East Greenwich 1757-1851, his father John, his uncle Caleb, his grandfather Richard), also signed the quilt. The 1850 Census shows two other possible signers, a Mary and Susan Johnson lived with a Stephen B Gardner in Coventry, RI. Then there is Elvira Johnson, maiden name Locke, Massachusetts, wife of Charles H., who signed also. Any help would be appreciated. The Gardners married into both the Briggs and Gardner families.

It could be the same Catherine Merrill (1834-1895) because this Catherine did not marry Thomas L Anthony (1833-1888) until 15 Jan 1863, and I could not find her in any RI or Mass Census until 1880. The 1880 census says she was born in RI, that could be incorrect. The Johnson women who signed the quilt: Mrs. Elvira Johnson, maiden Locke, married Charles H (dob 1790 Mass). Elvira Johnson her daughter, born 1829, (she had two brothers Charles B and Augustus) Then there is a Susan Johnson and a Mrs. Mary Johnson who both signed the quilt. This is the info about the Johnson signers that I know. There are other signers who have a Johnson in their ancestry. For instance: Catherine's husband Thomas Anthony's grandmother was Ann Mercy Johnson. Anna Anthony (another signer), her maiden name was Spencer, but her mother's name was Margaret Johnson (1736-1793). Thanks for your email!

Been trying to find the connection. The Catherine Merrill I have would have been married to a Walker at the time. Born NJ and moved to Ontario. Her husband having passed by 1850 could have made a return trip. My husband has the Merrill name on the Johnson side. Do you have any further information on any of the Johnson women to work with?

I have a signature quilt signed in 1850's by Hannah Briggs, dob February 26, 1782, her daughters Alice A and Eliza Briggs Williams, Hannah's grandaughter and Eliza's daughter Sarah D Williams. Susan C Gardner also signed the quilt and it appears that her maiden name was Briggs. Other signers: Anna Anthony (maiden name Spencer, dob 10/22/1771), and daughters Celia and Eliza A Anthony. Ann Remington, Catharine Merrill, Mrs Mary Johnson, Mrs Elvira Johnson, Susan Johnson, Elvira Johnson. Hannah Caroline Hill (maiden name Durfee, dob May 8 1808), and her daughters Mehitable (nickname Hattie D), and Lucy. Caroline Taylor. Mrs Perkins. Mrs Ralph or Relph?. I can't figure out for sure how they are related because I think some of the family connections started in the generation before what appears to be the 3 oldest signers Hannah Briggs, Anna Anthony, and Hannah C Hill. I welcome any information you have. And I have alot of info I would be happy to share.

Married Cyrenna Stone (Sheffield?) b. 1813 and d. 1885. Son of Job Briggs b.1771 Pine Plains, Dutchess, NY to d. May 1837 Bingham, Potter, PA and Sarah Rider b. 1776. Father of Benajor Andrew Briggs b. 5 Apr 1838 Alleghany, PA to d. 16 Mar 1890 Baldwin, St. Croix, WI who married Mary Elmina Thompson. Parents of my grandfather Louis David Briggs b. 22 Aug 1876 to d. 26 Oct 1956. Appears to be a direct line to John Briggs (of Portsmouth) b. 1609 Darrington, Yorkshire, England to d.
Surnames: CURTIS, HODGDON, HARRIS, SHEDD (?), ORMSBY, BRIGGS, BEEGAN -- 1800s

I've recently rescued a family picture album of what I believe is the extended Littlehale family from Quincy, Massachusetts. Surnames include Curtis, Hodgdon, Harris, Shedd (?), Ormsby, Briggs and Beegan. Almost all the pictures, from tin types to cabinet photos are labeled and in really good condition. The writing is a bit difficult to read, but when comparing to census records names can be determined. I will scan pictures to share; but my goal is to return this incredible picture album to direct descendants. Please contact me at suemanz.graham@comcast.net if you are interested. I am not related to or researching this family.

All sons were carpenters also. Family christian names are: William Charles, Luther Simon, Herbert James, Delbert Lucious and Norman Willis.

I do have allot of his things, his Navy patches and his eagle scout medal, pictures of him and my mother when he was with us her in Georgia.

I know this post is kinda old but I found it and thought I would add to what a greatly missed man you are looking for.
If you ever wanted to visit his grave just send me an email and I can direct you to where he is at rest.

Hi Uncle Mike, I have not seen you since 1989. Hope you and your family are doing well.
I am a decendent of Norman Willis Briggs who had brothers, William, Delbert and Luther. The family resided in Endicott NY at time of WWI; but their father and mother, Willam & Maria (Brown) Briggs were both born in Vermont and later lived in Westchester Co. where my grandfather was born and also in Susquehanna County Pa. Am wondering if the name Luther is a common thread as I do not know where as yet in Vermont they hailed from.

Rehoboth MA: Horatio Briggs b.8/31/1854 d.12/29/1925. Buried at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Rehoboth Ma. This cemetery is near the Attleboro town line. His wife: Addah Dorrance d. 12/29/1925. Children Bert Nelson Briggs 1876-1877, Addah Louise Briggs on same headstone. May also have other children or siblings buried at same cemetery in different plots.

There is also another Horatio Briggs buried at this same location which is a generation earlier: Horatio Briggs whose wife was Sarah Jane both born we believe in early 1830s. Their children and Siblings to 1st Horatio above: Briggs - Mary 1859, Frank Nelson 1859, Kathryn 18x5 died in 1906, Mable Foster Briggs, Addah Louise, Zelma Dorrance.

There is also Col. Elkanah Briggs b. 4/1780 and d. 7/23/1862. The monument is an oblisk on which the chiseled numers are very faint, so the dates are a best guess from looking at the stone. His wife Polly b. 4/1787 d. 9/1871. Children: Frank, Elkanah, Mary Alice.

Frank Nelson Briggs would be my great grandfather, 1st Horatio my great great grandfather.

In the Rehoboth public library is a published Briggs Family History for early colonial Ameria Briggs settlers. We believe this traces as far back to late 1620s.
From one of the census records it shows that my great great grandparents Caleb Tracy Briggs and Elizabeth (Morrill)Briggs had maybe a daughter who was born before they got married. This daughter was named Betsey Briggs. The first time finding her was in the 1850's census record when they were living here in Jackson Co.Michigan. That I had found her in the 1860's census but it turn out to not to be her since she was born in Ohio. The girl I thought was her it stated that she was born in New York. To do more research today.

Hey, maybe you can help me, too.....

I'm seeking documentations that Mary Briggs (Feb 1811 - 27 Dec 1876) Fayette Co., PA who married James Chalfant (11 Nov 1783 - 15 Oct 1860 Fayette Co., PA) was the daughter of Nathan Briggs ( 1775 Wareham, Plymouth, MA......died after 1840... probably Fayette Co. PA) and Alathea Pitcher (c 1776-80 in Wareham, Plymouth, MA..d after 1820 Brownsville, Fayette Co., PA).
Mary and James are my maternal gg grandparents. Any clues or documentation will be appreciated!

mary jane

I sure will do that I thank you for this.As I am sitting typing this out.And I will have stop and think about who and the events I going to have to figure out what to give you.I do believe the first one right off the bat. Would be I have some of the census records when my great great grandparents were live in or area the ingham county area.I just have written down the marriage information that I didn't have the lady type up the information. The main thing that I really don't have is the information of my great great grandfather's birth, his siblings and his possible full first name of his father instead of the letter J. Briggs. And for his mother her whole name since all I have is last name and that is Laycock born in Maine. The rest will be in a e-mail.

If you can give me a few more dates and Places of events, they will help me to perhaps zero in on some of your Briggs line from my 194 CD collection of family trees from Genealogy.com. You may send them to me directly at dngstork@charter,net.

With my David Briggs was born here in Michigan. Now unless you think that any of your Briggs can possblie help me in who I am wanting to find. You see my David Briggs father was Charles S. Briggs and he was born in New York, just resistly I found his death cerificate, and on it was his father's name of J. Briggs and the only thing down for his mother was her maiden last name of Laycock. What I don't have are is his siblings names that wouldn't having,he was born abt 1817. The other Briggs of mine is another one who was Born in New York to in the town of Warwick,New York,Orange,County New York. He was born may 2, 1810 this one I don't even have his parents names or siblings so if this helps with seeing if any of your Briggs match any of mine.Yea checked it out.You know when you don't think there would matches of the names then all of sudden a name pops up that you think would matches and it goes and does.
