Surnames: Briggs Shippee Johnson Hill Remington Anthony Williams Gardner
I have a signature quilt signed in 1850's by Hannah Briggs, dob February 26, 1782, her daughters Alice A and Eliza Briggs Williams, Hannah's grandaughter and Eliza's daughter Sarah D Williams. Susan C Gardner also signed the quilt and it appears that her maiden name was Briggs. Other signers: Anna Anthony (maiden name Spencer, dob 10/22/1771), and daughters Celia and Eliza A Anthony. Ann Remington, Catharine Merrill, Mrs Mary Johnson, Mrs Elvira Johnson, Susan Johnson, Elvira Johnson. Hannah Caroline Hill (maiden name Durfee, dob May 8 1808), and her daughters Mehitable (nickname Hattie D), and Lucy. Caroline Taylor. Mrs Perkins. Mrs Ralph or Relph?. I can't figure out for sure how they are related because I think some of the family connections started in the generation before what appears to be the 3 oldest signers Hannah Briggs, Anna Anthony, and Hannah C Hill. I welcome any information you have. And I have alot of info I would be happy to share.

Been trying to find the connection. The Catherine Merrill I have would have been married to a Walker at the time. Born NJ and moved to Ontario. Her husband having passed by 1850 could have made a return trip. My husband has the Merrill name on the Johnson side. Do you have any further information on any of the Johnson women to work with?

It could be the same Catherine Merrill (1834-1895) because this Catherine did not marry Thomas L Anthony (1833-1888) until 15 Jan 1863, and I could not find her in any RI or Mass Census until 1880. The 1880 census says she was born in RI, that could be incorrect. The Johnson women who signed the quilt: Mrs. Elvira Johnson, maiden Locke, married Charles H (dob 1790 Mass). Elvira Johnson her daughter, born 1829, (she had two brothers Charles B and Augustus) Then there is a Susan Johnson and a Mrs. Mary Johnson who both signed the quilt. This is the info about the Johnson signers that I know. There are other signers who have a Johnson in their ancestry. For instance: Catherine's husband Thomas Anthony's grandmother was Ann Mercy Johnson. Anna Anthony (another signer), her maiden name was Spencer, but her mother's name was Margaret Johnson (1736-1793). Thanks for your email!

Hello. I am a descendant of Alfred Wesley Briggs Jr. His Maternal Grandmother was Hannah Hill. I would love to see photos of that quilt and to share any information you may have.

I will take some photos outside when it stops raining and email them to you. (The photos taken inside didn't come out). There was another quilt with this one that was obviously quilted by the same person. It is a red center medallion quilt made for a period four poster bed. I would love to id who the quilter was, she was very skilled! I'll be happy to share the info I have. Do you know when and where Alfred Wesley Briggs Jr. and Hannah Hill where born? The Hannah Hill who signed the quilt is Hannah C (maiden name Durfee). She married Christopher Hill and they lived in Fall River Mass in 1850. My email is clarkewk@aol.com
