My father was Robert Walter Brenneman born in Smethport, PA, McKean County to Walter and Alice Brenneman (nee Alice Daly). If this is any connection to your family, there is a real cool website called Planet Smethport that lists all the old families from that area.

Looking for father's biological father Henry? Brenneman

My father Floyd Dunbar was born Floyd Songer. His mother had an affair with a Henry Brenneman before she was married to Irv Songer. My father knew him as Uncle Henry while he was a child. Later Arta (Floyd's mother) had an affair with Arthur (Art) Dunbar and they moved out to California.

While Floyd was in high school he received notice that Henry died and that he was entitled to some inheritance. Art would not let Arta admit publicly that she had the affair (even though he still had a wife and family back east)and the inheritance and the knowledge of his biological father disappeared. Supposedly Arta's Aunt Barbara Long kept in touch with him until he died.

What do I know about him.
1. He was a diver for the Corp of Engineers.
2. He was injured (got the bends) while looking for a drown girl in Erie.
3. He died around 1953.
4. He lived in the Penn.. Ohio area.

Any help would be appreciated.

Next he fled to [the Palatinate] Greisheim, 20 miles northwest of the city of Worms in Germany in 1671. He never went back to his nativeland. His sons, MELCHIOR and CHRISTIAN came to America from his adopted home. He resided Cheriessum, Rhein-Hessen, Germany.
I still would suggest to you to make the effort and look at the microfilmed records from Belp - it gives you an idea.

The way to proceed really would be that all Brönnimann-related events are extracted from the records

1) all baptismals (births were not recorded till the early 19th century)
2) all marriages
3) deaths were only recorded as of 1728, which is already outside your scope.

If all events are extracted and organized chronologically on a sheet of paper, you can systematically attempt to re-assemble the family tree and linking the families together accordingly. You will eventually get it right. I have done it with my own surname (Guggisberg) and I know it works. But it takes effort and time and certainly diligence. Assembling a family tree with what one finds on the internet will ultimately only result in copying other people's mistakes. Also, a printed book does not mean the data is accurate. Anyone can print a book and deposit with the Library of Congress. Genealogy is about people, our ancestors, and we do want to be sure that the names and details we have in our family trees really are(!) our ancestors and not just something someone some years ago jumbled together somehow.
In the 16th century some of the Brönnimann name bearers spread out to neighboring villages and towns that were perhaps within 10-15 miles from the ancestral home place that I described earlier, that is in Obermuhlern - Zimmerwald, Canton Bern. I know of Brönnimanns in the villages of Köniz, Oberbalm, Thurnen, Wattenwil, Belp, Toffen, Gurzelen, Oberdiessbach among others... your ancestor could have hailed from anyone of these places. After the Peace of Westphalia at the conclusion of the Thirty Years
War thousands of peasants from Canton Bern, Switzerland migrated to the neighboring French province of Alsace, some went to the German provinces of the Palatine and Brandenburg. It seems to me that the American Brenneman families descend from someone that had come from Alsace, France and settled in Pennsylvania during the middle of the 1700's.

Good luck and best regards
Daniel Guggisberg

As near as I can tell, this Melchior whose link you sent me to is not a direct ancestor of mine. Melchior the Exile, b. 1631 is my 7th great grandfather. You are indeed fortunate to have seen all these records in person.. I have relied mostly on what I have found on the internet.. but have spent a lot of time cross-referencing to try and remain as accurate as possible.
Thanks for your reply!
Tesa Jordan

Hello Tesa
thank you - did not expect to get a response to my comment
5 years later.

I am from that part of the world, that is from Obermuhlern, near Zimmerwald, Canton Bern, Switzerland.
In my database I am using the original spelling of the surname, being Brönnimann. You can find your ancestor Melchior on the following link:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

I am a direct descendant of his older brother Hans (born 1640).

As for your looking for ancestors beyond Benedicht Brönnimann I am afraid that is all but impossible. The records start in 1528 and they are in the beginning rather vague, that is do not give a spouse's name or mention the place of residence. The Brönnimann surname was already quite numerous back then and there is simply no way of knowing with certainty with Bendicht is the father of which Hans or Christian or Bendicht etc... - That is the reason why I did not go beyond to what I have because I could not ascertain with absolute certainty the lineage. I consider myself fairly expert in this research, notably being a native from there and being able to read and understand the old script and also being family with the distribution of any particular family within the region at any period. For outsiders it is a near insurmountable task especially if not knowing the local language which was a variant of Bernese-Germanic dialect (it is not German in the conventional sense) nor knowing the local demographics and geography.

You should certainly try and see for yourself. The records that cover the Brönnimann family ancestral area were kept at the church of Belp and go back to 1528. They are all available on microfilm through the Mormon Church Family History Library.

I was fortunate enough to have perused the actual, original records some 30 years ago, before they were collected by the Bern government and placed in the Bern State Archives.

Best regards
Daniel Guggisberg

Which book are you looking for? There are two, written a year apart.. one is over 1200 pages by Gerberich, and the other 500+ pages by Charles Breneman. The latter covers the descendants of Abraham Brenneman, a descendant of Melchior the Exile. The first book covers a lot more Brenneman's but not the Abraham branch. I have .pdfs of both of these publications..
http://www.metroevents.com/famtree has my findings.
Tesa (Brenneman) Jordan

Thank you for responding to my query and adding to my confusion!

According to my notes, my great great grandmother Martha Brenneman BRILLHART was born in 1856. My sources for this year include her tombstone, notes from a great aunt, and a calculation made from her obituary. From this, I could calculate her age to be 14 at the time of the 1870 census.

The note written on the back of the photo of Sarah Ann BRENNEMAN says that she is the mother of my Martha BRENNEMAN. How I wish I knew Martha's middle initial!

I would like to believe the information that you sent because Greene Twp., Wayne County, Ohio, is very, very possible, but I feel the information is still a little loose.

If you find any thing else that would more positively take this beyond assumption, please post.

Much appreciation.

Here is what I have from my aunt's research.

Elizabeth Breneman married Emanuel Grove in 1832.
They had three sons:
Morton Benjamin (1835-1836)
David (1837-1929)
Emanuel (1838-?)

My connection is through David. David's son Samuel had a daughter, Ruby Elizabeth. Ruby married Charles Ray Cross and had a daughter, Jeanne Ellen. Jeanne is my grandmother on my father's side.

Concerning the Brenneman History, by Albert Gerberich....
pg 286; 5. CHRISTIAN BRENNEMAN (6) b. in 1826, is also said to have lived near Orrville, O. The records at Wooster, however, are as silent regarding him as regarding his brother George.
Christian and George Brenneman were sons of Martin Brenneman and Veronica Kendig..
pg 284: MARTIN BRENNEMAN (5) b in 1776, d. in 1862, m. Veronica Kendig, dtr of George Kendig and Elizabeth Eshleman. He was a man of considerable means, but lost most of his land holdings in Landcaster County by going as security and bondsman for certain friends and neighbors. He was forced to sell the old homestead, partly in 1810 to George Ross, Esq., partly in 1819 to Samuel Heiney; and finally the last third in 1822 to John Mylin. In 1830 he moved to Wayne Co., O. settling near his relatives ten miles east of Wooster. From there he moved to a farm in Stark Co. O. where his wife died. After this he spent his time with his children, going to live with his son Martin Brenneman, Jr., at Princeton, IL, in 1855, and at the lattter's home he died. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 from Lancaster Co., Pa. He is beleived to have owned the old Bible of the pioneer Melchior Brenneman but considerable inquiry has failed to discover any facts concerning it. He and his wife had 10 children. Bured at Malden, IL

It appears form the 1870 census for Greene Township, wayne county, Ohio Pg 221A Im 33 L 11 that Martha (middle Initia M. on this census) is a daughter of a Christian Brenneman born about 1820 in Pennsylvania. It also appears that Sarah A. was born in Ohio and is a second wife to Christian. Children listed are James F. 18, Daniel 15 Martha 12 and Emma I 2. All the children are born in Ohio. It appears that Sarah A. is only the mother of Emma. asssuming this is the right family.

Hello,
Sarah's daughter, Martha Brenneman b. 21 Jun 1856, d. 17 Mar 1929, was married to Harrison Brillhart from Baughman Twp., Wayne County, OH. Harrison was born in Baughman Twp. Wayne County, OH. Harrison and Martha lived in the Baughman Twp area and are buried in Orrville, OH. I've seen Martha' maiden name spelled Brenneman and Brennamen. Her parents have been an old brick wall for me until last weekend. I attended a family reunion and a cousin brought a box of old photos. One is of Sarah Ann Brenneman, mother of Martha Brenneman who was the mother of my great grandfather. The note on the back of the card says of Sarah Ann "her maiden name was Henry". The 1880 census on "FamilySearch" indicates Martha's parents were from PA. Again, any information would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Perhaps we could help you if we knew a bit more about your Elizabeth. Is this her married or maiden name? When was she born? Do you know her parents' or her husband's names? Birth and death dates and places? How about children?

Barb
barbgeni@cox.net

Hi, do you have any more clues? I take it you do not know the name of Martha's father, Sarah's husband. Where in 1880 do you find them? How old was Sarah at that time? Did Martha marry? Where in Ohio did she die?

I checked Gerberich's The Brenneman History and do not find a Sarah Henry.

Barb

I believe I am also from this line. I am also very new to this, so I have not verified too much yet. Based on previous research by another family member, Elizabeth Breneman is my great x4 grandmother.

My email is MeganWreath@aim.com.
Looking for any information such as dates, parents, spouse, children, etc., on my Sarah Ann Brenneman. Sarah's maiden name was Henry. Sarah had at least one child, Martha b. 1856. Martha died in Ohio in 1929. Dates I have for Sarah's daughter, Martha, are from Martha's tombstone. According to 1880 census, Martha's mother, my Sarah Ann Brenneman, was from Pennsylvania. Any help with this brick wall is greatly appreciated.
