Charles AXFORD, 76, of rural Windom died Nov. 6, 2002, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services were held Monday at First United Methodist Church in Windom with Rev. Arthur Miller officiating.

Special music was provided by Rev. Charles Reid, organist; and Rev. Arthur and Sherry Miller, vocalists.

Casketbearers were Stan Larson, Tim Ketzenberg, Al Carter, Ron Thom, Nanno Schoneman and Bruce Mews.

Honorary casketbearers were Jack and Roxy Potter, Don and Marion Torkelson, Ruth Heern, Chad Osland, Chris Zimmerman, Sylvia Hansen, Marv and Bonnie Bottin, Loren and Glenda Defries, Ken and Joyce Paulson, Lloyd and Joy Greiner, Lloyd Brand and Leland and Esther Brugman.

Interment with military honors provided by Windom American Legion Post 206, was at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.

Charles Daniel AXFORD was born Aug. 7, 1926, to Angus and Esther (PIERCE) AXFORD in Estelline, S.D. Charles' formal education began in the country schools of Estelline and Cottonwood County and was completed at Windom Schools, graduating with the Class of 1944.

That same year, Charles was baptized at First United Methodist Church in Windom.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

In 1950, Charles married Emily SCHAFFER at the Bingham Lake Methodist parsonage. A year later, Charles and Emily began farming in Lakeside Township near Windom. Charles spent a lifetime enjoying raising animals and crops.

Charles was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Windom and Windom American Legion Post 206.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas, and an infant granddaughter, Janet Marie.

Survivors include his wife, Emily of Windom; Children, Margaret SVOBODA of Plymouth; Floyd (Barb) AXFORD, Katherine (Jens) Hansen, Barbara AXFORD and Bruce AXFORD, all of Windom; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, William (Shirley) AXFORD of Windom, Audrey Carter of Jeffers, Robert (Kathleen) AXFORD of Bingham Lake and Marilyn (Harlen) FISK of Sanborn.
