Hi,
My father was Jose Saenz Arviso/Arvizu from Las Cruces, New Mexico, born in 1913.
My sisters and I are trying to search our family origins and need help. We have been told my father had another family in California, possibly in the Monterrey area and a daughter in Arizona.
Any help would be appreciated.
Please, no bill collectors...... (joke)

Hello, my name is Juan Manuel Arvizu, and I am from Calexico, California. I am a Deputy Probation Officer with the Imperial County Probation Dept. Most of my family is from Mexicali, Mexico, and my grandfather's name is Concepcion Arvizu, born in Yuma, Arizona. Originally, the Arvizu last name originated in Sonora, Mexico, approximately in Cananea Mexico, a small mining town in Sonora. Keep in mind that there are several different spelling version of the Arvizu last name. I have seen it spelled Arvizu, ARVIZO, ARVISU, and ARVISO, I have also seen it spelled ARBISO. Anyway, please contact me if you have any questions.

Juan,

Thanks for the info. My family is based out of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Socorro/El Paso, Texas area.

My father really liked to travel, so who knows, we may be cousins.

We do know that our family name was changed from Arvizu to Arviso when my father joined the service.

My relatives with the Arvizu heritage still hold onto the Arvizu spelling.... Unfortunately, they are dwindling away.

Hope all is well with you and your family,

E.P.

From my understanding, no matter what the spelling, in most case all of the above came from Arvizu's. The way most of the changes were brought about due to the different ways that the names were spelled when the births were noted by the Priest's who kept the records in the small towns of Northern Mexico. The name given at birth, and the way it was noted in the birth records became your name of record.

I don't know how true it is, but it was an interesting piece of information I picked up years ago, I just thought it needed to be passed on.

trace the Arvizu family as it moved with the De Anza Expedition from Nueva Viscaya of the 1700s to California. Read BUILDING CALIFORNIA-200 YEARS OF Arvizu HISTORY by John Arvizu.
