Hi Cheryl,
Actually, I'm a black Armand of Haitian descent. Although I know very little of my father. I believe his name was Jean-Francois and was probably born in Port-au-Prince. I'd like to know who my French ancestor was who came to the island in the first place and why...was he a sailor? businessman/plantion owner? Funny, how no one responded to your question, Cheryl. Wonder why?

What I know is, is that a Guillaume (D')Armand was born in Hautes-Alpes, Region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France about 1688. Father was supposedly an Alexandre, but there's no knkown wife for Alexandre, who was apparently born in the same area in 1653. Nothing else is known about Guillaume. But there's another Guillaume born about 1583 in Theus, France. That's all I really know. Earliest Armand is Pierre, born about 1400 near Chateauvieux, Hautes-Alpes. Do you know anything about him as well?

I was wondering if you have any Guillaume Armands in your files, from either Alsace, Lorraine, and Hautes-Alpes (Provence_Alpes-Cote d'Azur). I've been researching and have come to believe that my Armand ancestors came from Hautes-Alpes. On the site for Hautes-Alpes Genealogy, I didn't really find any D'Armands, so I figured they must have been Armand only. And D'Armand in unofficual documents or the two names were interchangeable. Do you have any Armands from Hautes-Alpes and any Guillaume Armands in your files? That's all.

Seeking info on the Armand/Armond family of the Alsace-Lorraine area of France. I have an ancestor that supposedly came from there about 1702, but the only Armand I can get any info on is Francis Rolin Armand. Does anyone have records of any other Armands/Armonds born in that area in the late 1600's? I'd like to back a few more generations before my ancestor. If anyone can be of any help, that would be appreciated.

Frederic, bonjour! I am Jerome Arment, my ancestor, William Arment immigrated here (Pennsylvania, USA) from France in or shortly before 1702. When he bought land after coming, he spelled his name as Armond. And tradition states he came from Lorraine. Would you happen to have any names of Armand or Armond that lived there in the 17th century? I cannot find any on the computer and was curious as to if you could help. Most of the Armands I find are from near Chateauvieux or from what used to be Dauphine. Are there any addresses you know of that I could write to or send requests for information? Would like very much to correspond with you.

Auman-Orman DNA Project

The main goal for this project is to help sort out all the Auman-Orman, Ahman, Aman, Amen, Amin, Ammon, Ammond, Arman, Armon, Awman, Ehrman, Oerman, Ohman, Ormond and all other variant spellings of the same name. Our objective is a standard one, to help any and all with the variant spellings of Auman-Orman to find missing family branches and to help point them in the right direction.

Y-chromosome DNA testing needs to be done by a male with the surname of Auman-Orman or one of the other variant spellings. The Y-chromosome is only carried by males and is passed from father to son. If you are a female researcher of this name, you will need to find a brother, father, uncle or cousin with one of Auman-Orman surname spellings to test for you.

I would like to invite any one with any of the varient spellings of the names Auman-Orman to join the Auman-Orman FamilyTreeDNA Project.

Hello Ms. Jackson,
I was interested to read your posting from May 11th. My husband is a descendant of Francois Rolin Armant also, and I have been researching the family for about three years. Though I have quite a bit of information about the descendants from Joseph Marie Armant and his first wife, our branch comes from his second wife, Marie Theresa Legros. I hope you can help me with a problem.

In the Diocese of Baton Rouge's records, I found that among other children, Joseph Marie and Marie Theresa had
-Jean Jacob Joseph Armand, born March 19, 1782, and
-Pierre Ignace Joseph Armand, born February 1, 1785.
Then, in "Natchitoches Colonials" by Eliz. Shown Mills, on page 47, she lists the 1787 census of Natchitoches. Jean Jacob and Pierre are not listed. However, there are two new names...Valery is age 7, and Doctrouve is age 5 (the same age that Jean Jacob should be in 1787). Do you know anything about these four? Or are there only three and Doctrouve is a nickname? Any help would be appreciated.

You seem to have done a lot of research already, but if there is something that I can help you with, let me know.

Eileen Armand

Dropping "De" from name

The "De", "Da" or "D" meant "of", "son of", or "of the family of". The root name of Armand or Schonauer is then what one looks to for meaning. For example the dictionary will say that Armand is a derivative of Herman or warrier.

In many names the "er" or "auer" may mean something like "one who does", for example a tanner is one who tans hides, so that a person with the last name of Tanner would believe that an ancestor had tanned hides for a living. I would suggest that you look up both French and German meanings of the word "Schon" as that region you identify had been ruled by both countries at different points in time.

Also some of the French who came to US wanted a different name to reflect their loyalty to US.

Some Huguenots believed that the religious persecution of France might follow them not only into Germany, but also across the Atlantic.

Some families with ties to King Louis deliberately changed name as they thought that spies and killers from France would come after them. There are more people thinking they are connected to the "Lost Dauphin" than seems feasible even given a prolific king making many "non-Royal" babies. I imagine that even families who were not related may have been encouraged to muddy the waters so to speak by claiming connection.

You might want to look up some websites on the sources of names. Ancestry.com has some as well as articles in the weekly newsletter that is a free subscription.
