hello I'm an Arias from San francisco, CA. My grandfather Henry.A Arias was born in Fort Lupton, CO on Oct.2, 1920.His father's name was Paulino J. Arias from Penjamo, Mexico. I think he came to Texas first in 1917. Then settled in Colorado. Got his papers to stay as an American in 1933. He is one of three. Plus 6 half sisters and brothers which were all from the same mother (Jenoveva Sandoval)

Thanks for the tip. I'll continue with Laur"E"ano and wait for the 1940 census.

I have one (1) picture of MANUEL (12/22/1922) that I can share with you in exchange for a similarity in your family.

Write me a private e-mail in Ancestry and give me your home e-address. I'll do the same.

Thanks, again.
Cocoz in AZ

Hi,
I have a similar tale. My mom's father was MANUEL LAUREANO and the story I was told was he changed his name to GARCIA because the "gringos" couldn't pronounce his name correctly.

I have NO DOUBT about that ... I've met some pretty stupid Euro-whites who have a hard time pronouncing SMITH.

Unfortunately, everyone knowledgable about MANUEL is deceased and I'm not sure of the spelling. Laur"I"ano pops up more than Laur"E"ano.

Can you lend some 'correct spelling' assistance?
Thanks.

David,
My father once told me that the name Arias came from the hebrew word "Ari" which means Lion. I have not been able to confirm that. He also told me that the Family was Jewish until the 1490's when they were forced to convert. But all this is anecdotal, I have not been able to confirm anything. I know his grand father and his brothers came to Costa Rica from Asturias in the late 1800's. That is the only part I have been able to confirm.
Rgds,
Ricardo Arias

Antoni1977, I have also heard that our last name was of Jewish ancestry and that they were forced to convert to Catholicism in the 1500's. I understand that the last name originated in Galicia. I know we tracked our lineage to Asturias, Spain, and that's where our family who arrived to Costa Rica in the late 1800's is from from.

For your ancestors, have you looked at the family history centers that the Mormons operate. I go there all the time. Let me send you their website.
www.familysearch.org
You can look up names and it will be linked to a microfilm . You can order the microfilm and go view it at the family history center.
Let me kow if this helps!
P.S. I was looking at some message boards and the name Arias shows up a lot coming from Spain.
Arias family residing in Coachella, CA

I am curious to find out if I can locate any relatives with a surname of Arias. That is my maternal grandmother's maiden name. She was born in Santa Isabel, Chihuahua. Her family however, also lived in San Diego (downtown)and the Coachella valley...I believe they had a date farm. This would have been from the 1920's through the 40's. I'm not certain on the years..but if this sounds familiar let me know.

My great grandfather's name is Alejo Arias, born in the late 1800s. He lived and died in a town a few hours south of Jalisco, called San Gregorio, located in the state of Michoacan. My father recalls that my great grandfather said he had moved to San Gregorio Michoacan from the state of Nayarit, during a land rush. Alejo grabbed land in Michoacan and settled there. He had 13 kids (only 4 stayed in San Gregorio and the rest moved to other parts of Mexico (I don't know where or their names), my grandpa stayed in San Gregorio and had 11 children, half of who are in Michoacan and the rest are now in the US. Jalisco/Michoacan are replete with Arias. Best of luck with your search.

Hi Leslie, I'm from Guatemala City but my dad's family is from Antigua Guatemala, his family is huge, and I am pretty sure that it's the same family. I have a Family Tree and there is an Ester's name there. If you want me to send it to you my Email is lbenitez3@hotmail.com. And don't feel bad, I understand the Arias family pretty good, my dad, so you have an idea, had 2 kids outside the marriage when he was 62. My Dad's grandmother had 22 kids. We are related to the Camposeco's family, if you don't know who he was, a football soccer player well known in Guatemala. Also there were (an aunt & uncle) 2 twin sisters that married 2 twin brothers. A lot of strange things, but extent family and very proud of being part of.

We lived in the Los Angeles area but are now living in Virginia.
Our father was Daniel Arias y Arias born in Villanueva Guatemala. His mother was Estefana Arias (known as Ester) and his dad was Juan Arias. That's why he ended up with the double Arias name...pretty cool.
My father might have left a lot of kids everywhere that we might not know about...that sounds so bad but it's true.
In other words I probably have a lot of step brothers and sisters.
The family name Arias is of Shepardic origin. It means that the family originated from Israel. During the diaspora, when the Jewish people were scattered by the Romans to parts of the Roman Empire ( exile), the Arieh family was sent to Spain
Here is a link which will explain more about the history, and give you the "Real" family shield

http://sephardim.com/
