The meaning of the name, "Arias"

David Arias  (View posts) Posted: 27 Mar 2001 10:02AM GMT
I once had a Spanish professor at the university that I attended who told me that the name "Arias" is a medieval Spanish word meaning "eagle." I, as of yet, have never checked this out in order to confirm or disconfirm his statement. However, it does seem as though there may be some connection between "Arias" and "eagle" since and eagle is a prominent feature on the Arias coat of arms. If anyone finds anything else out regarding this topic please let me know.

David,
My father once told me that the name Arias came from the hebrew word "Ari" which means Lion. I have not been able to confirm that. He also told me that the Family was Jewish until the 1490's when they were forced to convert. But all this is anecdotal, I have not been able to confirm anything. I know his grand father and his brothers came to Costa Rica from Asturias in the late 1800's. That is the only part I have been able to confirm.
Rgds,
Ricardo Arias

Hello,

My grandfather is also Jose ARIAS, but he isn't from Lugo. He was born in Larouco, a village in the province of Ourense.

He came to cuba with his brother and they stayed in Cuba a couple of years. His brother married there and had children.

After a while, they returned back in Spain. I don't know what happened to the family I have in Cuba.
