I have searched everywhere for info on a Levi Taylor (1807 SC-1884Ga) for years with no luck. Perhaps you can help. There is some stories that the name was once Aday or some spelling as such. He married a Martha M Hay in 1832. Her name is difficult to read in a family Bible. It could be Martha MKay or MHay.
Thanks so much for any help. Barbara

Looking for John Evans Family and C. Victor Evins

Hello, I'm trying to get in touch with C. Victor Evins who left the following message on the Loudoun mailing list 15 Sept 2000. His email address is no longer valid.

"I spent the last three days in Chester Co., Pa. searching for the origins of a John Evans and his family who appeared in Loudoun County, Virginia in 1763. They lived on Sugarland Run near Herndon. If anyone is interested I did have some success and would gladly share the details. The family consisted of John Evans (father), Elizabeth (wife); sons: Griffith, William, Richard, David, and Joshua; daughters: Mary, Amy or Emmet who married a Thomas, and Elizabeth. John's will is in Loudoun County and is dated 10/4/1766. I learned that John purchased land in Charles Town Township, Chester Co., Pa in 1724 and lived there until 1763 when he moved with most of his family to Loudoun County, Va. He was a blacksmith, as were most of his sons. His sons David and Griffith Evans have wills in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, Pa."

Further information - my cousin and I just discovered Rhoda's step-daughter, Jane (BOYD) ROSE and her husband, named in the 24 Dec 1802 deed, moved to Fairfield Co., OH, very close to Rhoda's family in Licking Co., OH. John and James ROSE witnessed that entry. I'm looking for more information about this ROSE family. A possible descendant in Fairfield name a daughter "Rhoda Jane ROSE" and I need to investigate all ties among ROSE, BOYD, and EVANS.

Pat, if you are still online, could you please check a couple ROSE references in your Index to Loudoun Co., VA Land Deed Books 2A-2M, 1800-1810? I believe pgs. 88, 90 and 201 refer to a Thomas ROSE dec'd who is somehow related to George ROSE and his wife Jane BOYD. Or if someone else has a copy of this text, would you respond? Thank you, Peggy

I am also curious if Fielding Turner who married Anne Lewis in 1732 was Lewis' uncle.

Lewis Legg, Elijah Legg, Fielding Legg, Willis Legg and Zeph Legg I find together in different sources, but I can not prove the family connection.

The county Lieutenant would have been the most senior officer of the various Loudoun County militia units. I am looking for who this person was in 1781. He would have been the one responsible for ordering the militia to march to Yorktown in the mid to latter part of 1781. From some of the research I have done the Governor would have notified the county Lieutenant to prepare his militia for action. It would then be up to the county Lieutentant which militia units he chose. I was hoping someone would have some kind of record as to who this persons name was.

Check out the family trees section of ancestry.com. there are several references to Joseph H. Shumaker and Mary there. Also, the census records show Mary born in 1832, the marriage was in 1853. There are several trees with joseph shown as the son of John, who was the son of George. It has lots of info on the family trees section, although most is not documented, still I would start there for clues that you can follow up on. Look at the one for Peter Schumacher of Alsace, it seems to be most accurate. Also, look at the 1910 census. Joseph is living with his youngest daughter Rosa, who is married to a Virts. She is listed by ancestry as being 20 years old, but someone can't read, she is actually 30 in the 1910 census. Look at the census itself, not at the ancestry "translation" which is incorrect.

Well first of all, you need to check on your dates for Mary. If she was really born in 1853 then she cannot be the mother of these children who are born beginning in 1854. Are you using census records? Church records? How did you find her maiden name? Often times parents named their kids after themselves or even the grandparents, so it is important to be sure you have the right generation. I would look at the church records if possible. I know they exist because I have seen them. Your local Family History center (Mormon genealogy center) will have access to them. I will check my notes to see if I can find the film number for you. They go back to about 1792 so this family should be in there. I will also look in my records to see if I can find a Joseph. Most of my research is on the Becker/Baker family, not on the Shumakers, but I have some info to look at. I will get back to you.

George Tavenner started his home WINODEE before the Revolutionary War.
Richard Tavenner built his house HARMONY HALL about 1786.
Both homes are located in Hamilton.

I have been to both homes and my cousin who is visiting his son in Maryland on a military base wanted to see the houses belonging to our ancestors. I gave him directions.
He went to Hamilton.

Said he could spot Richard Tavenner's House right across the Harmony Methodist Church on Colonial Way but that it had been covered with stucco and painted grey.

He said George Tavenner's house must have either been torn down or covered up with new materials. Its a little harder to explain where WINODEE is.
One can see the back of the house from a little right of way path off Tavenner Lane running off Colonial Way just pas Hamilton Station Road but to see the front of the house, one has to go back out to Colonial Way, drive down Hamilton Station Road and turn into Winodee Subdivision onto Winodee Way.

I cannot believe that ANYONE would mar these 200 + year old houses by covering up the original exteriors and have to believe that my cousin didn't see the proper houses.

Does anyone live in Loudon Co. and is familiar with these historical homes?
There is no marriage for Frederick Ridenbaugh recorded in Loudoun. Be aware that quite a few early marriages were not recorded, in part due to circuit rider ministers who often left the county without giving their returns to the court.

It is also quite possible that Frederick married in Frederick County, Maryland.

As I stated before, the marriage of Maria Eva and Christian Beegle did occur in Loudoun.

From "Early Church Records of Loudoun 1745-1800" by Hiatt:
New Jerusalem Lutheran Church Records
Christian Bugly married Maria Eva Reutenbach, Friederich Reutenbach's surviving widow, 15 Dec 1784.

Pat Duncan
GenNutLdn@msn.com

I have been trying to find out who the parents of Frederick Ridenbaugh (sp) who I found was living in Loudoun Virginia around the late 1770's early 1780's with his wife Maria Eva
maiden name unknown and their children; Peter R. born abt 1770,George R. born abt 1772, Adam R. born about 1775, Frederick R. born about 1776 and Elizabeth R. born about 1782. Is there anyone out there who may have a connection to this Ridenbaugh family? There are so many variations to this name that have relatives in various states, that I feel there has to be some sort of connection. This family had to come to the U.S. from some European country around the the early 1600's or 1700's. What part of the United States did they first settle in? What was his name? Did he come with his family, wife and children or other relatives?

Wow. According to the info I have, John Cooper was b. in 1785, m. in Loudoun in 1810; was living there when their first child, Sarah, was b. in 1812; but was living in Belmont, Co. Oh. when their second child, Jonah, was b. in 1814. He would have turned 16 in March 1801, and was abt. 28 when he moved away. They were a very religous family. Do you know of any church records available from that time? Thanks, Al

When I posted the question about photos I was hoping that some relative or someone would have old family pictues hidden somewhere and would like to share them.
Again thank you

Thanks JAYERL I have the marriage info, and have traced them through Belmont Co. and their descendants to points beyond. They did have two sons, Isaac 1825 and John Wesley Jr. 1819 that I can't find. Do you have anything on them? Also, you can find a biography of John Cooper Way on the Pleasants, WV. website on Rootsweb. I am currently entering the Coopers on Ancestry. Look for Cooper/Vandyne. Thanks again.

He has finally lost use of his legs and is wheelchair bound.

I found Nancy (Mercer)and John Cooper in Belmont County, Ohio Census records. Somwwhere in my records, I have a copy of page from a book that gives there marriage date in Loudon, VA. It was noted in the book that the original records no longer exist. I doubt that I am going to have time until after the first of the year to do anything with my research. Will keep you posted on what I find and copies of what I have.

Parish records were primarily concerned with the operating expenses of the parish and do not contain baptismal records. Cameron Parish records were lost during the Revolution. There are relatively few church records from that period. "Early Church Records of Loudoun 1745-1800" by Hiatt contains Quaker, Lutheran, and a few small Baptist churches. No Rhoda Evans is listed. There is a Thomas Evans listed in the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting records as a witness to the marriage of John Smith, son of John Smith of Frederick Co., married Esther Gibson, daughter of Joseph Gibson, 7th day of 3rd mo 1792.

When I abstracted the Loudoun Deed Books I included any mention of location. On the deed in Deed Book 2I, page 398 no location was listed for Samuel Newman and wife Rhoda.

The only mention of Samuel Newman on the Loudoun Personal Property Tax lists after 1800 is in 1802 in the First Battalion. A Samuel Newman also appears as early as 1789 and resides with other individuals until 1798 when he is the head of his own household. Since Rhoda Evans appears on those lists 1802-04, if he is the same one she did not marry him for several years. She may have also married him after she moved to Ohio.

Pat Duncan
GenNutLdn@msn.com

Wow! This is a major break through. And your supposition about Thomas' name makes perfect sense.

My immediate questions are:

(1) Do the parish, church, or marriage records at your disposal give any indication when Rhoda married Thomas Evans? Their eldest child, named William Evans, was born 9 Nov 1787. Do the parish or church records give baptism of the children? Now I wonder if all 8 of Rhoda's children were fathered by of Thomas Evans. I've checked everything Ancestry and LDS FamilySearch has online.

(2) Is there any evidence in parish records when Rhoda Evans married a third time to Samuel Newman? Is Samuel Newman in the tax records? I don't find him in 1789 or 1800 which are my only sources. Can you check?

(3) Deeds Book 2I, page 398: 6 Jan. 1808 William Hummer to Samuel Newman and Rhoda Evans apparently settling all claims against the estate of Thomas Evans. Would the deed tell where Rhoda and Samuel Newman resided?

(4) On 20 Aug 1809 Rhoda's eldest daughter married in Licking Co., OH, although biographies of her sons indicate she moved to Ohio alone with her children before then. Big question: What happened to Samuel?

If you can help in any way or point me in another direction, please do so. I'm in your debt!
Yes, I have authored many Loudoun Co. references.

The Order Book references were all that appeared in those books. Note that on that same day permission was granted William Hummer the Admr. of Thomas Evans dec'd to take the deposition of John Hannah in Tennessee who was a witness to the will of Williams Evans. Wills 1757-1850" by Hutchison shows:

EVANS, William
Book:Page G:124
Date of will: 13 Jan 1775
Received in Court: 13 Dec 1803
Davis, Nathan, Wife's Brother
Evans, Mary, Wife
Evans, John, Son, <21
Hanne (Hannah), Thomas wife's son, Step-son
Hanne (Hannah), John
Davis, John, executor
Harper, Nicholas, executor
Steel, John, witness, resident of Ky. by Feb 1802
Jenkin, Samuel, witness
Hanna, John, witness, resident of Tenn. by Feb 1802
Farmer. Deposition of 9 Feb 1802.

From the above you might suspect that Thomas Hannah, a step-son, became familiarly called Thomas Evans over the years.

Thomas Evans died before tax collection time in 1802. As his widow who owned horses, Rhoda would have been required to pay taxes, thus she is listed for three years beginning in 1802. She herself would not be taxes as Thomas had been when he was alive (as he was a male over 16 years old.) It appears that Rhoda was married to John Boyd and after his death married Thomas Evans.

If you have further questions, let me know.

Pat Duncan
GenNutLdn@msn.com

Thank you very much, Pat. (You must be the author of the Indexes I've read!)

Can you help me translate the Order Book entries you posted into plain English?

(1) February 1802 [p. 173]
What does the parenthesis after Thomas EVANS mean? [als Thomas HANNA/HANNAH] Did Thomas Evans have 2 surnames? Is this another individual entirely?

(2) February 1802 [p. 175]
Does this mean William Hummer is trying to establish Thomas Evans' participation in the will of William Evans dec'd? Is he trying to find out if Thomas inherited anything from William Evans? Somehow William and Thomas are related. Should I be looking for a will of William Evans, dec'd, although it sounds like questions surround the document.

(3) October 1802 [p. 476]
I don't understand the naming structure for Rhoda here. In 1802 she is "Rhoda Evans". She was Rhoda Boyd before John's death. So is her maiden name Evans or is Evans her newly remarried name? Is there a legal formality to how she is referred to? What is your opinion; I suspect you've read lots of these entries?

Point of Interest:
The 1830 U.S. Census for Perry Twp., Licking County, Rhoda Evans is enumerated as "Rhody" Evans!
Thank you for carefully copying the 1802 property tax list as "Rody"

Peggy
