Surnames: Evans, Boyd, Newman, Hummer
Still seeking information about a RHODA EVANS of Loudoun Co. My RHODA was the wife of Thomas EVANS who died about 1801. They had 8 children -born between 1787 and 1797 in Virginia - the last three born in Loudoun Co. Maybe the earlier children as well. After Thomas's death, RHODA moved the family to Licking Co., Ohio.

Here are a couple references to a RHODA EVANS in Loudoun sources:

(1) 1802, 24 Dec: RHODA EVANS of Loudoun, widow, administrator of John Boyd, dec’d, and George Rose and Jane Rose his wife, a daughter of said John Boyd, dec’d, deed to Ludwell Lee, for $500, land in Loudoun Co., VA, containing 300 acres, leased by Thomas Ludwell Lee Esq. of Stafford Co., dec’d, to William Boyd, father of the said John Boyd, for the term of 3 (lives?); William Boyd devised to the said John Boyd, who died without will; the same has come to be distributed between the said RHODA EVANS, widow, and Jane Rose. The land was purchsed by Ludwell Lee from Thomas Ludwell Lee, son of the said Thomas Ludwell Lee, dec’d; Ludwell Lee to occupy land peacable, free and clear. Abstracts of Wills, Inventories, and Administration Accounts of Loudoun County, Virginia 1757-1800 by J. Estelle S. King

(2) Same event mentioned in Index to Loudoun Co., VA Land Deed Books 2A-2M, 1800-1810 by Patricia B. Duncan, Book 2C, page 233, Date 12/24/1802, RcCt: 11 Jul 1803:RHODA EVANS of Ldn (Adm & Wd/o John Boyd dec'd, died intestate) and George Rose & wife Jane (d/o John Boyd) to Ludwell Lee of Ldn. B/S of 300 ac. Wit: John Lyons, Wm Coleman, Wm W. Williams, Jno Rose, Presley Sanders, James Rose.

(3) In Index to Loudoun Co., VA Land Deed Books 2A-2M, 1800-1810 by Patricia B. Duncan, Book 2I, page 398, Date 6 Jan 1808, RcCt 9 May 1808:
William Hummer (Admr. of Thomas EVANS, dec'd) to Samuel Newman & wife RHODA (formerly widow RHODA EVANS).  Receipt and relinquishment of all claims against the estate.  Witnesses:  Abiel Jenniers, William Right, John Keene, James B. Lane.

HELP - Does anyone know if these are the same woman? Is the widow of Thomas EVANS also the widow of John Boyd? Is my RHODA (who is suppose to be in Licking Co, OH between 1803 - 1807) either one of these RHODA EVANS??

Sure appreciate any help. Peggy

I don't know that this will help much, but here is additonal information.

From the Loudoun Co. Personal Property Tax Lists:
1802B Cameron Parish Evans, Rody
1803B Cameron Parish Evans, Roda
1804B Cameron Parish Evans, Rhoda
[note: taxes on 2 horses]

Order Book V, 9 February 1802
[p. 173] Certificate granted William HUMMER with Thomas BLINCOE and Nicholas HARPER his securities and bond for obtaining Letters of Administration on the estate of Thomas EVANS (als Thomas HANNA/HANNAH). William COLEMAN, William W. WILLIAMS, William HORSEMAN and Richard FREEMAN to appraise estate and make report to the Court.

[p. 175] Dedimus awarded William HUMMER Administrator of Thomas EVANS dec'd to take the depositions of John STEAL a resident of Kentucky and John HANNAH a resident of the state of Tenissee which persons are subscribing witnesses to the last will and testament of William EVANS dec'd.

Thank you very much, Pat. (You must be the author of the Indexes I've read!)

Can you help me translate the Order Book entries you posted into plain English?

(1) February 1802 [p. 173]
What does the parenthesis after Thomas EVANS mean? [als Thomas HANNA/HANNAH] Did Thomas EVANS have 2 surnames? Is this another individual entirely?

(2) February 1802 [p. 175]
Does this mean William Hummer is trying to establish Thomas EVANS' participation in the will of William EVANS dec'd? Is he trying to find out if Thomas inherited anything from William EVANS? Somehow William and Thomas are related. Should I be looking for a will of William EVANS, dec'd, although it sounds like questions surround the document.

(3) October 1802 [p. 476]
I don't understand the naming structure for Rhoda here. In 1802 she is "Rhoda EVANS". She was Rhoda Boyd before John's death. So is her maiden name EVANS or is EVANS her newly remarried name? Is there a legal formality to how she is referred to? What is your opinion; I suspect you've read lots of these entries?

Point of Interest:
The 1830 U.S. Census for Perry Twp., Licking County, Rhoda EVANS is enumerated as "Rhody" EVANS!
Thank you for carefully copying the 1802 property tax list as "Rody"

Yes, I have authored many Loudoun Co. references.

The Order Book references were all that appeared in those books. Note that on that same day permission was granted William Hummer the Admr. of Thomas Evans dec'd to take the deposition of John Hannah in Tennessee who was a witness to the will of Williams Evans. The "Index to Loudoun Co. Wills 1757-1850" by Hutchison shows:

EVANS, William
Book:Page G:124
Date of will: 13 Jan 1775
Received in Court: 13 Dec 1803
Davis, Nathan, Wife's Brother
Evans, Mary, Wife
Evans, John, Son, <21
Hanne (Hannah), Thomas wife's son, Step-son
Hanne (Hannah), John
Davis, John, executor
Harper, Nicholas, executor
Steel, John, witness, resident of Ky. by Feb 1802
Jenkin, Samuel, witness
Hanna, John, witness, resident of Tenn. by Feb 1802
Farmer. Deposition of 9 Feb 1802.

From the above you might suspect that Thomas Hannah, a step-son, became familiarly called Thomas Evans over the years.

Thomas Evans died before tax collection time in 1802. As his widow who owned horses, Rhoda would have been required to pay taxes, thus she is listed for three years beginning in 1802. She herself would not be taxes as Thomas had been when he was alive (as he was a male over 16 years old.) It appears that Rhoda was married to John Boyd and after his death married Thomas Evans.

If you have further questions, let me know.

Wow! This is a major break through. And your supposition about Thomas' name makes perfect sense.

My immediate questions are:

(1) Do the parish, church, or marriage records at your disposal give any indication when Rhoda married Thomas Evans? Their eldest child, named William Evans, was born 9 Nov 1787. Do the parish or church records give baptism of the children? Now I wonder if all 8 of Rhoda's children were fathered by of Thomas Evans. I've checked everything Ancestry and LDS FamilySearch has online.

(2) Is there any evidence in parish records when Rhoda Evans married a third time to Samuel Newman? Is Samuel Newman in the tax records? I don't find him in 1789 or 1800 which are my only sources. Can you check?

(3) Deeds Book 2I, page 398: 6 Jan. 1808 William Hummer to Samuel Newman and Rhoda Evans apparently settling all claims against the estate of Thomas Evans. Would the deed tell where Rhoda and Samuel Newman resided?

(4) On 20 Aug 1809 Rhoda's eldest daughter married in Licking Co., OH, although biographies of her sons indicate she moved to Ohio alone with her children before then. Big question: What happened to Samuel?

If you can help in any way or point me in another direction, please do so. I'm in your debt! Peggy

Parish records were primarily concerned with the operating expenses of the parish and do not contain baptismal records. Cameron Parish records were lost during the Revolution. There are relatively few church records from that period. "Early Church Records of Loudoun 1745-1800" by Hiatt contains Quaker, Lutheran, and a few small Baptist churches. No Rhoda Evans is listed. There is a Thomas Evans listed in the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting records as a witness to the marriage of John Smith, son of John Smith of Frederick Co., married Esther Gibson, daughter of Joseph Gibson, 7th day of 3rd mo 1792.

When I abstracted the Loudoun Deed Books I included any mention of location. On the deed in Deed Book 2I, page 398 no location was listed for Samuel Newman and wife Rhoda.

The only mention of Samuel Newman on the Loudoun Personal Property Tax lists after 1800 is in 1802 in the First Battalion. A Samuel Newman also appears as early as 1789 and resides with other individuals until 1798 when he is the head of his own household. Since Rhoda Evans appears on those lists 1802-04, if he is the same one she did not marry him for several years. She may have also married him after she moved to Ohio.

Pat, if it's not too much trouble could you look up Rhoda's husband, Thomas Evans in the Loudoun Co. tax lists?

Online, I find a Thomas Evans in 1787 List C; 1788 List C and 1800 List A. Are their others? What is the earliest and how old would he be?

Is there an 1801 Tax list? You don't have Rhoda and her horses that year.
Thank you.

In 1787 he had to be 21+ years old? Am I correct?

The age for being tithable was 16 years old. I doubt if at 16 he would have been the head of a household.
