Looking for any information on the Baker family who attended the German Reform Church in Lovettsville. I think the line is as follows: Immigrant is Philip Baker, b. abt 1724, m. to
Juliana Schumacher, d. 1786. Most of the Schumacher family attended the New Jerusalem (Lutheran) church in Lovettsville. One of their sons was Samuel Baker who married Catharina (?), A son of theirs (my ggr. grandfather) Philip Baker was baptised in the German Reform Church in Sept. 1796. Philip married his wife Catherina Mann of Culpeper Co, VA about 1820. Philip and Catherina had several children, one of whom was my g grandfather, Jonathan Noah Baker. The family moved to Perry Co, Ohio about 1850, where Catherina died in 1854 and Philip died in 1861. Jonathan Noah served in the 106th Ohio Regt. in the Civil War, then went to TN in about 1867 where he became a Methodist preacher and married Ann Eliza Hunt in Washington Co, TN. I believe there were two Mann families living in the Lovettsville area in the early 1800's: one was English, the other German. I am interested in the German family. The Baker family were German, as were the Schumachers. Any info is greatly appreciated.

My family is also descended from the Phillip Baker/Samuel Baker line. Samuel's son George (1795 - 1862) is my GGG Grandfather. George married Anna Elizabeth Virts (1799 - 1862) and had a son Joseph Curtis (of whom I have an old portrait). Joe Baker was born 1824 and married Naomi Wilt and their son George Mark is my Great Grandfather. George Mark's wife's (my G Grandmother) sister, Annie Arnold married Joseph Luther Shumaker. Lute's parents were Joseph H Shumaker (1828-1911) and his wife was Mary Miles (1832 - 1909). Additionally, Lute Shumaker's granddaugther is still alive and has the old Shumaker family bible. She lives in Lovettsville. I also have a number of photographs of Lute and his sister. I would be interested in your research so far on Philip Baker, if you would be so kind as to email me.I've only located death records on Phillip and Samuel so far.

Hi Sharon,
It's great to finally find someone who is related to this Baker clan. I have found the baptism record for Samuel's son Philip Becker/Baker) in Sept. 1796 in the German Reform Church (now St. James Church of Christ) in Lovettsville. His wife was listed in those church records as "Catharina" but of course no last name except Becker appears. I can send you a copy of the church record (It's written in German). I need to do further research in the old church records to see what else I might discover. It seems that most of the Bakers attended the German Reform Church, while the Schumachers attended the New Jerusalem (Lutheran) church, also in Lovettsville, although some members of both families attended the other church.
I can see some problems that I need to solve already. I had your George died in 12 Feb 1884 and buried in the church cemetery (German Reform Church) at Lovettsville. Your date of 1862 is more reasonable, so perhaps my George is another family member. I do not have a son Joseph Curtis for George and Anna Elizabeth. The birthdate would put him as about child # 3 or 4. I have 10 children listed for George and Anna Elizabeth, as follows:
1. Mary b. 1820 (She is listed as a family member in the 1850 census but could be a daughter-in-law).
2. Samuel (I have him also marrying an "Anna E. Virts" and having 4 children, the first is son Joseph W.)
3. Johann Adam
4. Eliza Ann (m. to Joseph L. Virts)
5. Sarah Elizabeth
6. Lydia b. 1831
7. Julia b. 1834
8. Catharina Jane b. 1 Sep 1836, d. 2 Feb 1869, (bur. in
German Reform Cemetery, Lovettsville)
9. George William, b. 7 Nov 1838, m. Elisabeth Civilla Virts. He died 10 Aug 1912, buried in Union Cemetery, in Lovettsville.
10. Charles T.

My info on George's children came from my grandfather's sister, Mary Baker Hunt who is now deceased. The burial info came from the LDS microfilms on cemetery records for Loudoun Co. VA. I can send you the reference numbers if you like. Do you have a marriage date for George and Anna Elizabeth? I estimated about 1819, but that could be late.
You can contact me directly at charbushka@earthlink.net or by snail mail at 721 Via Elena, Goodyear, AZ 85338.

I found the microfilm of the church records at the Mormon library in Mesa, Arizona. They probably have that film at your nearest library or you could have them order it for you. The microfilm number is #032272 which I believe was for Loudoun Co. church records or maybe it is for all Virginia church records. I think the New Jerusalem records are on the same microfilm. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate your response. Have you found any marriage records for that area??
I take it that the churches--New Jerusalem Lutheran Church and the German Reformed Church does not have any marriage records??..So, in essence there are none to find???...Thanks!!!
Rose

There are early marriage records for both the New Jerusalem Church and the Germen Reformed Church of Lovettsville VA. You can access them in paper format at the Thomas Balch Library in Leesburg Virginia. A book containing early church records, including marriages was just published on the Reformed Church. Thomas Balch also has many translated church records; most are indexed but some are not.

A look up person for Loudoun Co has sent me some records for my Moll/Mull families. In the records..as sponsor for a baptism there is a Georg Schumacher listed. ,,for another baptism there is a Jacob Schumacher and wife Elisabeth listed,,,on a will..witnesses are Simon and Daniel Shumaker,,,,an appraisal there is a George and Daniel Shoemaker...on another will--there is a Jacob Shomaker...George Mull is buying land in 1803 that adjoins Jacob Shumaker. Then in the Reformed church article--it mentions...in 1767--a pious deacon-George Shumaker. Wonder if we have any closer ties between these 2 families???...Do you want any of that info sent to you?? Also, I am done with the look up gal...she responds quickly and thoroughly if you would like to try her..:))
FYI and Thanks!!!

I have some info on Shumaker family in Loudoun County but unfortunately I am not at home. There is a wonderful book at the Library of Congress "Shoemaker Pioneers". I'm sure I still have a xerox copy of this book (a lot was destroyed in tornado last Sept and I have not been home since). Should be able to go home within the month.
