Check out the family trees section of ancestry.com. there are several references to Joseph H. Shumaker and Mary there. Also, the census records show Mary born in 1832, the marriage was in 1853. There are several trees with joseph shown as the son of John, who was the son of George. It has lots of info on the family trees section, although most is not documented, still I would start there for clues that you can follow up on. Look at the one for Peter Schumacher of Alsace, it seems to be most accurate. Also, look at the 1910 census. Joseph is living with his youngest daughter Rosa, who is married to a Virts. She is listed by ancestry as being 20 years old, but someone can't read, she is actually 30 in the 1910 census. Look at the census itself, not at the ancestry "translation" which is incorrect.

You are correct on the dob for Mary Miles...I have the correct info on the TribalPages tree that I have on there; Somehow I messed up the numbers when I posted here. Thanks for bringing it to my attention--I hate to make mistakes, so I need to stop starring at the screen so long!
I am using census counts, marriage & birth records, & a lot of help from the kindness of strangers for what I have gathered beyond my paternal grandfather.
I appreciate any info you may have as well!
