Thanks for answering and for sending me what you have on this family. The cemetery was very grown up and looked as though it hadn’t been taken care of in recent years. Mr. Norman was surprised and said that although he hadn’t been there for a few years, it had been taken care of up until then. The large monument to Walter had fallen over at one time but had been put back up and repaired. Do you have pictures of it? If not I took some and will be glad to send to you.

Another thing, do you have any information on how the Leakes tie into the Moores. I have yet to prove that some of the Leakes went on to Lunenburg-Brunswick County VA. Guess that will be my next trip. I would like to find some info on the internet so that I can prove it when I take my trip. Thanks for any help you can give.

My direct email is lotusgirl58@yahoo.com if you would like to use that one.
This system will not allow PDF files as attachments.

There was a reunion there about 15 years ago, and it was cleaned up, but I have not heard of any organized work there in years.

Ed

I know many years have past since you wrote this. Hopefully, you are still interested. 11/20/2009 I went to Goochland Co VA to see if I could connect my relative John Jackson Moore to Mary Leake who was born in Goochland Co (no luck though).

What I did find was that a gentleman in his 80's had never heard of 'Rocky Spring(s)' and he had lived there all his life. He mentioned that there was a large farm within walking distance and I wondered if this could had been part of the original 'Rocky Spring(s)'? Our 'guide' took us to a cemetery known as the Leake Cemetery that was grown up but had readable memorials in it. Also 2 stones erected by DAR. The largest memorial was for Walter Leake.

I later went to the library and there the cemetery was listed as Rocky Spring-Leake Cemetery. Confirmation?

I think that we were in contact several years ago prior to a Hilton Reunion in England.
I've never seen any documentation on the parents of John Hilton although the indenture to John Nutt seems to be well accepted. I've not been able to follow English history around the time of Cromwell and the Charles' and the importance of religion in the politics. Eric Lamberton who traces the family at the British end had mentioned the fact that the Hiltons were Catholics also. What is confusing is the John Hilton became a sexton of St. Peter's Parish and I think that was/is and Anglican/Episcopalian church. Can you send the references on Robert Hilton.

Thank you for your reply. I have George Hilton married to Esther (Hester) Newman, 1722, New Kent County, Virginia. I have only 9 children listed for George & Esther. John Bryant, died Mar 28, 1829, first married to Obedience Cox, Nov 24, 1757, Cumberland County, she d. 1764, then to Mary Ligon, 1765, Chesterfield, Virginia. Mary Ligon's will was contested, as she being the wife of John Bryant in Cumberland County Court, 1764. This will was attested to by Mary West, wife of John Helton, born 1763. John Bryant's name found in tax records of Cumberland County, 1782, owning 400 acres, valued at 40 pounds, he paid 8 shillings taxes. John Hilton, of New Kent Parish, imbarked from Bristol,Glouchester England. Many have listed Bristol as his birth place, thats unknown now & not believed to be correct. He was indebted to John Nutt, a Bristol Merchant & tobacco farmer in Virginia for four years. At the end of his obligation to Mr Nutt, he was given 50 acres in New Kent County, It is said that John & other male members of the Hilton family being Catholic, refused to attend the Anglican Church as ordered by the King, they where then thrown into prison in London. The debt to Mr John Nutt, was to pay for his prison release & passage aboard ship to America. Further research points to John's father to be Robert Hilton, of Helton Bacon, (now Hilton Village) in England, Robert served as Justice of the Peace, Westmoreland County, England , 1666. John's mother was Mary Hilton, daughter of John(Baron Hilton) Hilton,Hilton Castle. All dates for births & deaths from The St. Peters Parish Register, New Kent Virginia 1680-1787.
From "A Hylton Legacy Our Roots in Appalachia" by Deborah Ward. John Bryant Hilton was the son of George Hilton Sr. and Esther (Hester). He was orn about 1737 in King and Queen County. He was married twice. Married Obenient Cox (Coke) in the Dover Church in Goochland Co. on the 24th Nov 1757. He marries Mary_______ before 1784. He and Obedient had George Hilton born in Goochland County 20 May 1761. He was baptized in Dover Church, Goochland Co. 13 Sept 1761.

John Bryant Hilton was the grandson of John Hilton and Elizabeth who married about 1690 . They lived in New Kent Va, where he was a farmer and Sexton of St. Peter's Parish Church. The dates of his birth are unclear as is where he came from in England and how he came to Virginia.

Your John Bryant was one of ten children. I am descended from his brother Elijah.

The are a few Hilton genealogists around. Most of the books were published privately.

The DNA test is a painless process which involves using 3 cotton swabs to gather samples from inside the mouth. I have recently submitted my test to Ancestry & discovered that I come from the same stock as the Uttleys of Heptonstall, Yorkshire, England. My purpose in taking the test is also to find a link between the Virginia & North Carolina Utleys from whom I am descended.
Hello. I am researching John Jennett in Halifax Co., VA. He appears there around 1803 but James Jennett and Samuel Jennett appear there in 1768. I think they're related, possibly John is son of James. There were Jennetts/Gennetts in Goochland, VA, very early. Several were named James, one was Thomas. I am trying to see if there's a connection between the Halifax and Goochland Jennetts. Some Jennett families were on the coast of NC and I have tried to connect them to Halifax Co. VA but no success yet. I'd like to hear from you. Do you have Gennett info to share? Thanks!

I found Bessie's family on the 1910 census - maybe you have? It is not my family.

1910-1851 Venable St., Jefferson Ward, ED 87, Richmond City, Henrico Co., VA

EDWARDS, William A., age 56 (born abt 1854, VA), shipping clerk, packing house
, Marion, wife, age 44 (born abt 1866, MD), mother of 4, 3 still alive
, Lillian E., daughter, age 24 (born abt 1886, MD)
, Bessie E., daughter, age 9 (born about 1900, VA)
, Marion, daughter (but marked "M" for male), age 6 (born abt 1904, VA)

William and Marion state that they have been married about 27 years, so they wed about 1883. I tried to find this family in other censuses throughout Virginia and Maryland, but no luck. There are too many William EDWARDS to be sure of the correct one. The only Marion WILLEY from Maryland that was close was the following, so possible parents?:

1870 - 6th Ward, Baltimore City, Baltimore, MD
WILLEY, William, born 1805 (whole family born MD)
, Maria, born 1827
, Elemuel, born 1847
, Hannah/Anna, born 1856
, Cecelia, born 1858
, Georgiana, born 1859
, Marrion, born 1862

Hope this helps. Goochland Co. is next to the city of Richmond.
Laura

I know the chances of this building remaining are exceptionally small but I thought I'd ask anyway in case anyone is familiar with the area.

I am a descendant of John Moss of Goochland County through his son, Nathaniel. When he dies in 1784-85, John Moss left to Nathaniel a plantation, two slaves named Isham (or Joham) and Richard, and a water gristmill. I believe that gristmill was on Little Byrd Creek.

Like I said, this may be a ridiculous question as the chances of the building still being there are minute, but does anyone know if that Gristmill is still extant or does anyone have any information regarding this structure? I would love to learn what I can about this mill, this land, and John Moss.

Thank you.

I appears that the Hix/Hixe/Hicks family of Goochland Co., VA came from the John Hixe who married Sarah Preston (from the James City/Charles City Co., VA area). They APPARENTLY had sons named Thomas, John, Daniel, Henry, Nathaniel (married Rebeckah Johnson), Marmaduke, Hubbard, Richard, Joseph and Samuel Hix, Senior (who married Diane Willis). Marmaduke was on the Goochland Co., VA tithe lists in the 1730s-1740s, as were a few other Hix men...including Samuel Hix, Samuel Hix, Junior and Goulder Hix. Nathaniel Hix lived in one of the surrounding counties, as I recall. Some of members of the Hix family were in Lununeburg/Mecklenburg Co., VA later (including a Richard Hix, as I recall)

A David Davidson from my family had been closely associated with Thomas Hix from this family in Charles City Co., VA in the early-mid-1730s, and it appears that a possible son of this David Davidson named William Davidson (who was on the Goochland tithe list in the 1740s) married a Hix woman, since they named sons Goulder, Richard and John Davidson. "Little Sammy Hicks" down in NC was almost certainly from this same family, as the name "Golder/Goulder" appears down there again. One of the Hix woman married a man named Martin Martin, and that couple had a daughter who married a man named Merry Webb. This Webb family also married into my Davidson family.

If you "Goggle" for "John Hixe" (and/or "Hix") and "Sarah Preston," you will get several "hits."

My ancestor was James M. Hicks/Hix, born c1774 in Goochland Co., VA. He moved at some point in his life to Lincoln Co., NC.. I found him there by the 1810 census and their is also a record of 1805 regarding the estate of John Yates, des'c, naming James Hicks and wife Sussanah Yates (daughter of John). I believe James was likely in Lincoln Co., prior to this, possibly living in the home of a brother named John HIcks, who was a head of household living next door to John Yates in 1800. Two males 16-25 were in the Hicks home.
John HIcks seems to have disappeared by the 1810 census, when James then began to appear. I believe John died or moved away.
The 1860 census of Lincoln Co., NC., had the information that James was born in Goochland, VA. (I'm not sure if the census recorder specifically asked what county and state, but he apparently provided it and that was what was recorded. I am looking to find the Hicks/Hix family of Goochland which my ancestor came from.
