I would like to have any information you may have on the Rudder family. I have been to the farm many times as a child. I can remember Uncle Jess and Aunt Lucille very vividly. Thank you for responding previously. Debbie Paschal PS My g-grandfather Charles Bishop Linkous married Elizabeth Blanche Rudder on the farm.

Perhaps there was more than one marriage?

Carlos M. Groseclose
Son of D.B. and H.C. Groseclose
11/16/1886-6/17/1888

No cause of death is noted.

H.C. Groseclose is also listed in this cemetery but only by initial only.

Hope this helps. Let me know if there is anything else I can look-up for you.

Thanks Theresa,
Early on in my research, I found the Germanna colonists of 1717 and the Micael Koch / Cook family.
This one of the families that I literally have mega bytes of documentation on.
For about 1 year, I was sure that I had the right family and ancestry but I had a email from a lady who said they believed the family was Dutch (which was a suspicion of my older brothers and sisters and also shows up as the suspected heritage in a biography I found for George Frederick Cook (son of Henry Henderson Cook, brother of Frederick Cook, both sons of Zachariah).
And in addition, there was a family rumor (at least in this branch of the family), of being related somehow to Captain James Cook. James is one of the names that has survived several generations in this branch of the family.
Initially I thought that the odds of Dutch relatives being related to Cpt. James Cook sounded pretty far fetched, seeing that Cpt. James Cook had not had any male sons survive to reproduce the Cook name on his branch.
But being a glutton for punishment and liking a challenge, I set aside the Germanna colonists for a while and searched for any Cooks withinn 200 miles of Tazewell, VA.
To my surprise one of the families I found was the Valentine and Jacob Koch / Cook connection to the John Hamilton Cook uncle to Capt. James Cook, and living at right time, within 30 miles of the farm on Wolf Creek.
The story of Cook's fort and the Baughman massacre and the rest of the Indian Creek stories were great to read, however none of them claimed to have a Frederick in the family.
There was not a lot of detail on the brother of Valentine Koch, Jacob's family and line, so I was hoping we would find the connection to that side of the branch.
However, the more I researched all of the Cook's the more that I saw definite circumstantial evidence of the connection to the Germanna Micael Cook family.

SO - I wait with excited breath on the info you have!
THANKS ALOT,
Ralph Cook.
PS - Remember - I have lot's of saved and official documentation on just about any of the Cook families.

Hi Ralph, Nice to meet you. I have done a bit more research in the last two years, although I did take a break for awhile. I think, and I say think, as far back as I have traced, my dad's Cooks start with a John Cook who was from London. My mom's Cooks, and your Frederick Cook who married Jennie Neel, seems to have started "maybe" with a Micheal Cook from Germany in the 1600's. Email me directly at tasmith9@swbell.net and I can generate a report for you and discuss in more detail what I have. I have some children of Jennie and Frederick and their children, etc.

Hi Theresa – I was searching and stumbled on a leter you had sent to Michelle Hamilton a couple of years back.

My family is a direct descent from Frederick Cook and Jennie Neel also.
My line is as follows:

Frederick Cook b: about 1765 – location? d: 1834 Tazewell, VA / Jennie Neel b: about 1783 died about 1843
Down to:
Zachariah Cook b: 1823 Tazewell, VA d: 1880 Tazewell, VA/ Sarah Ann Crabtree b: 1823 d: 1894
Down to:
Frederick Cook b: 1851 Tazewell, VA d: 1932 Wheatland Township, Hickory Co., MO / Sarah E. Crabtree b 1857 d: 1914
James Henry Thomas Cook b: Tazewell, VA d: 1961 Brightview, Alberta, Canada.

I have been researching solidly for about 2 years and have accumulated lots of details and documents on Frederick’s life starting from 1797 in Wythe Court records where he was accepted as a constable.
However, I have been unable to affirm any details of Frederick’s ancestry and family before that date. I have lots of suspicions and have accumulated several Giga bytes of files on the various Cook families that lived in and around Tazewell just before and after 1800.
I am pretty sure that Frederick had several brothers, particularly John, Peter, Adam, and possibly Henry.
I am pretty sure that they were Dutch as Frederick and Peter and Adam and John show up in Wythe tax lists as Frederick Kook, Peter Kook, and Adam Kook and just over the county line in Montgomery County is John Kook.
I suspect Frederick and his brothers may have been related to Harmon Cook, the land man of Pittsylvania County who was named Harmon Kook on documents before about 1810 or so.
I believe Frederick’s family may have started from PA but been in North Carolina by the 1770s and may have had connections with the Breshears family around 1780 in Greene County, Tennessee.
I suspect Frederick may have served in the Revolutionary war in the Continental line for about 7 years and perhaps was a prisoner after Charlestown and been imprisoned on the infamous prison boats that the British used to hold the POWs. I also suspect that William Day and Frederick Cook were both imprisoned on the boats and hence the life long friendship (William Day and Frederick split 200 acres of land on the Wolf Creek).
I suspect that Frederick Cook may have had the 640 acres of land entitled to him by warrant of the government stolen by a fraud ring who was stealing land from soldiers at the end of war.

HOWEVER THESE are all suspicion – I have documented data that says that these things happened to a Frederick Cook, however how can I prove it was our Frederick?

The only way I can bring a layer of proof is to hear some family stories that give me a thread of Frederick’s ancestry to follow.
As this branch of the family has been long gone from Virginia, there was very little available to my generation of the old family stories and the majority of the family could only trace themselves back to Missouri.
Being the second youngest in my family I had to rely on what I could find by on-line research and the death certificates of Fred Cook (born 1851) set me on the path to Zachariah and Tazewell.

Any Family stories or known ancestry or even where the rest of Frederick and Jennie’s sons ended up would be great.
Any connections to Henry H Cook, Frederick’s brother would be greatly appreciated also. I have a write up on Henry’s son “George Frederick Cook” of Smyth, VA.
The amount of male descendant’s seems to be limited as so far I haven’t heard from or seen a male Cook that is related (or that I am aware of being related other than in my own family).

ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Thanks,
Ralph Cook, Millet, Alberta, Canada.
Most records in Bland County Virginia were burned when the courthouse burned in the 1880's. Charles M. Rudder, Jr. was my grandfather and I have a handwritten deed where there was some land dispute between his father, Charles M. Rudder and another party that was settled by a special commissioner. It also mentions land that came to him via a Mustard, though offhand I don't remember the first name. I don't know if this is what you're looking for but would be glad to dig it out and find the exact names and dates for you if this is something you might be looking for. This deed is hand written and dated 1888 or thereabouts.

Hi Gordon,

I am the great granddaughter of Sidney A Kitts. He was the son of Nancy M Kitts, daughter of John D. and Lucinda Stump Kitts. Since you are related to Nancy's sister, Letitia I thought you might have info, stories or maybe even some photos of the family. I believe that Sidney's father was William Lampert.(Do you know anything about him?) I think I know which William Lampert but I am not absolutely sure yet.I also think I have tracked down Lucinda's Stump line, if you are interested in that. I have not been able to find out much about Nancy at all. I have gotten some things on the Kitts and Pauleys from Verla's old site.I agree that Lucinda probably died right after she had Letita(Lettia?).I do have a few photos of Sidney and one of Fanny, John D.'s daughter.I also got some documents from the Library of VA site on John D Kitts.Do you have info, stories on the rest of his children?

My grand mother was Lettia Martelia Kitts (15 April, 1858-3 October, 1924). She married Creed Pauley. Nancy and Lettia Kitts were children of John David Kitts' 1st marriage to Lucinda Jane Stump (7 April, 1830-22 April, 1858). I believe Lucinda died as a result of the birth of Lettia. John David's 2nd marriage to Susan Hall produced many children. John David, Susan and Nancy are buried in the Central Lutheran church cemetery in Burkes Garden, Tazewell County. John David was in the Virginia cavalry in the Civil War. He was captured in what is now West Virginia and spent a couple years in a POW camp. I have not been active in a couple years but I have information on John David and his children which I can share.
