I have a photo of the graduating class of Sabinal High School for the year 1928. I would be happy to send a copy in jpg format to anyone who would care to see it. Unfortunately, there are no names on the photo and I can only identify one, who happens to be my father: Floyd BOWEN. But the photo is clear and I'm sure you will recognize your ancestor if they graduated from Sabinal High School in 1928!
Re: Maggie Wilkins, Finis Bates Brooks

First, you CAN NOT ASSUME that this person died before the 1900 census. She and Finis may have separated for one reason or another.

I did a number of searches in the 1880 and 1900 census looking for "Maggie Wilkins", "Mag* Wilkin"(would identify any person whose first name began with "Mag"; I looked for any "Marg* Wilkin*" since many Maggie are really Margaret. I also looked under last name "Brooks". There were many, many possibilities. The 1900 Census finds a Maggie Brooks living on the Chickasaw Indian Reservation...but that one was in Oklahoma and this person was married to an Oscar. Anyone of these persons found "could" have been the correct one. I also looked at all 16 pages of the Uvalde persons in the 1880 Census, but she may not have been there until 1890. There was a Maggie Kennedy, age 7.

Unless she was only 10 when they married, she HAD to have been alive in 1880; but not necessarily living in Texas, or even having the name of Wilkin(s) at the time. Most of the citizens carried Hispanic surnames. BUT, without a date of birth, or even an age identified from the marriage in 1890, it is impossible to work just on names in this manner.

So, your search is first in Uvalde, the town. But, also check records of Uvalde County. If you have not, see if you can obtain the marriage certificate, or any type of documents, books, information, concerning this Wilkin*, or Finis. Marriage records, divorce records, newspaper records of deaths, disappearances, etc.

If you do have additional information from the marriage certificate, that would help. Also check the names of the witnesses, sometimes they are family members. For example, Maggie Wilkins is married, one of the witnesses is Abner Morris. An 1880 census finds Abner Morris in Texas, a sister is Margaret N. Morris, the same age as the Maggie getting married. This clue is then further researched and possible family found.

So, if you have any additional information, post it.

Ron Bestrom

Hi,
I didn't find anything in the Censuses for Maggie either. However, almost all of the 1890 Census was destroyed by fire. She died before the 1900 Chickasaw, Indian Territory Census because Finis is shown on that Census by himself.

I'd look for their marriage and her death record in Uvalde County. Successful Searching!

So let me get this straight. Finis was your ggf's brother, is that right? Well, where was Finis born and who were his parents and where did they live and who were his siblings and--golly, I just feel so blessed to have the opportunity to talk with someone who knew so much about him and his family and everything! Finis died in my grandmother's home in Okmulgee. My gramma Beulah Essie Idonia Brooks Webb died in 1998. Do you know if any of her siblings are still alive? Or could you send thir survivors my email address, timespeech@yahoo? That would be so great. My own family was shrinking til I started msg.ing to Ancestry.com. I know it's corny, but I feel so loved!

He is buried between Georgia and Vera.H e was my Grat Grandfather's brother. My Great grandfather was Richard Julius Brooks.Finis ia listed on the 1910 census of Haskell County, Texas with several children at age 66. Sure was a fiesty fellow. There was a set of 2 year old twins in that bunch. He married once in Indian territory to his last wife, and is listed on marriages for indian Territory.

All of these people are from Uvalde, Texas. I am not sure where Cristobal Gonzales and Refugia Hernandez lived.

Donaciano Flores born about 1850 in Mexico; husband of Ana Maria Gonzales. Donaciano was the unknown for 30+ years but don't have any other information on him. Did he remarry? Where did he die? Did he have other children besides Pedro and Jesusa Flores?

Ana Maria Gonzales born Aug 1859 in Nadadores, Coahuila, Mexico; first husband-Donaciano Flores; second husband-Francisco Ramirez; her parents-Cristobal Gonzales born in Mexico and Refugia Hernandez born in Mexico (no other information on Cristobal and Refugia).

Maximiniana Hernandez Gonzales, born 1855 in Mexico; died 20 Jul 1922 in Uvalde, Texas; sister of Ana Maria Gonzales; born in 1855 in Mexico and died 20 Jul 1922 in Uvalde, Texas; husband-Geronimino Garcia (no other information); children: Refugia, Cristobal and Guadalupe. I am not sure of Maximiniana's husband, Geronimo Garcia. I found his name on Guadalupe Gonzales's death certificate.

Guadalupe Gonzales born 4 Jan 1874 or 1873; married Juan Mireles (first husband)born 25 Nov 1874 in Eagle Pass, Texas; died in Uvalde, TExas 1 Jul 1941; children: Francisca, Adelfo and Martin Mireles; second husband-Evaristo Gonzales (I don't know his parents' names.); third husband-Jesus San Miguel; I think Guadalupe and Jesus San Miguel raised my father, Thomas Mireles.

Adelfo Mireles is my grandfather. So two sisters married into both sides of my family. I hope all of this makes sense but ask questions if you don't understand.

I am seeking more information on Cristobal Gonzales, Refugia Hernandez, Geronimo Garcia, Maximiniana Gonzales and Donanciano Flores.

If anybody has any pictures of these families please email me at heinz@4dv.net

I was lucky and found the latest information on www.familysearch.com and rsearched the last names and found the church wedding records. These must have just been entered online because I have been searching for at least 30 years for these names. I am hoping somebody out there has some more information. I will be glad to share any information that I have.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
Hi Everybody: Last week I not only found the name of my great-grandfather, Donaciano Flores but also found the parents of my great-great grandparents, Cristobal Gonzales and Refugia Hernandez. I also found out that my maternal great-grandmother, Ana Maria Gonzales, also had a sister named Maximiniana Gonzales. Maximiniana Gonzales was married to Geronimo Garcia and had a daughter Guadalupe Garcia Gonzales. Guadalupe Gonzales was married to Juan Arredondo Mireles and they are the parents of my grandfather, Adelfo Mireles. I have been looking for these people for about 40 years so you can imagine my excitement.

I am now trying to find information on Donaciano Flores, Maximiniana Gonzales, Geronimo Garcia, Cristobal Gonzales and Refugia Hernandez. If you have some information on these people, please send it to me. It is amazing how just one name can open up so many other families. Thank you in advance for your help.
heinz@4dv.net
Linda Mireles Heinz

Noticed your family immigrated from Poland (like mine in 1853). County lines changed over time and some land was included both Uvalde and Bandera counties over the years.

Must admit I'm curious regarding the surname of your Polish ancestors.

Do check out website for The Bandera County Courier Newspaper at BCCourier.com. The history section has many articles on the original Polish pioneers there.

Also be sure to check out Pioneer History of Bandera County: 75 Years of Intrepid History - only available on line at http://texashistory.unt.edu/data/TBDP/UNT/meta-pth-27720.tkl

Family stories in their own words and reprints of articles originally by J. Warren Hunter from his local newspaper and his books.

Good luck on your search.

LoisKindlaSmith

I am wondering if someone could advise on finding a newspaper article from 1949 in Uvalde. According to my father there was an article written about his family immigrating from Poland. We are going to be having a family reunion this summer, celebrating the 60th anniversary of their arrival, and I would love to have a copy of that story. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

I am looking for any information about my mother. Effie Irene Nichols. She was born in Ozark Arkansas in about 1906 and she married Cravens Rosevelt Woodward some time before January 1929. They had 10 Children 5 boys and 5 girls. My mother died in about 1946 in or around Fayetteville Arkansas of breast cancer, cause by being kicked in the breast by a goat. I was only 2 years old when my mother died.

My mother was a blond haired blue eyed Indian, we are looking for her ancestors.

I think her fathers name was A.L.
Actually we have no idea where Mark was born. According to the census records he stated the following --

1850 Census Robertson County Texas

Mark Coleman born 1822 Tennessee
wife and kids listed

1860 Census Brazos County Texas pg 96
Mark and wife listed

1860 Ag Census Boonville Brazos County Texas Line 20

Mark A Coleman 60 acres Unimproved value 193 Farm Value 859 Farm 10

1860 Military Service Confederate Service
Sargeant under Capt. Killoughs Company Texas Home Guards Wheelock.

1863 Brother Wyatt C. Coleman is murdered.

1870 Census totally not in the USA as I can find no family on the census believed to be in Mexico at the time.

1880 Census Precinct 3 Uvalde County Texas

Mark Coleman born 1826 North Carolina
living with his youngest son Albert

1900 Census Uvalde County Texas District 73 pg 5B line 52

1902 Newspaper Kerrville Kerr County Texas
Mark A Coleman of Uvalde is visiting his nephew W. W. Coleman.

Mark A Coleman born Aug 1822 Alabama (he also states he is widowed when his wife is living with a daughter in Wmson Co)

To add to the confusion the children state that their father was born from Georgia, South Carolina and Kentucky. Which one is right we have no clue. Then to make matters worse his tombstone reads Born 1814 and died 1908.

Mark married in Oct 1840 in Yalobusha County Mississippi.

Wyatt C Coleman b 1814 Virginia (according to census) died 1863 Wheelock Robertson County Texas, married Cynthia issue 8 children. Robertson County Texas probate index states "no papers" and the childrens court documents states "no papers"

Mark Coleman and Youngs Coleman Related????

I am a descendent of Mark A Coleman who lived in Uvalde County from 1880 till his death in 1908. I have found evidence that he was the brother of Wyatt C Coleman who died in 1863 in Robertson County. Wyatt's family left Robertson County and settled in Kerrville, Kerr County. So now I wonder if perhaps Mark was related to Youngs Coleman who settled in Uvalde. Any information would be helpful.

Hi,

It would help to have a little more info to work with. Were the Lyda's ever in Uvalde county? In Texas? Do you have a timeframe?

This is what ancestry says about the name Lyda

Polish (Lyda): descriptive nickname from an augmentative form of Polish lydka ‘calf’, ‘lower leg’, presumably applied to someone with long or otherwise noticeable calves.

Below is 4 Betty Lyda on the 1930 census

Betty Jae Lyda Cedar, Polk, AR Daughter
Betty Lyda Chicago, Cook, IL abt 1929 Niece
Betty J Lyda Pittsburgh, Allegheny, PA abt 1926 Daughter
Betty L Lyda Perry L,Rosa L Spartanburg, Spartanburg, SC abt 1930 Daughter

Doyleen Routh
Judge J. B. Davenport researchers - help

Many references in Bandera history to Indians on "Judge Davenport's place." Possibly a researcher of Judge Davenport's family can help me locate marker for victim of Indians in 1872 "in Sabinal Canyon, below Utopia." He was Theo Kindla, scalped and feet skinned while herding sheep for Judge Davenport, buried where he lay.

Alternative source reported: East/West Verde Creek area.

Where was the Davenport ranch in 1872?

Folks have seen a marker with Kindla's name but no one remembers exactly where. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

See attached article by J Warren Hunter

I am from Philadelphia but am trying to learn more about my grandfather's roots. I know little but his name is Jesse Casares (possibly originally Cazarez or Cazares), grew up on a ranch in Laredo Texas, I think his family owned a general store - not sure. He left there at 17 and never went back and really didn't keep in touch but i believe there may be family there. We found out a while ago that he his parents (Ascencion and Concepcion) were from "deep in Mexico." I am wondering if this is a common surname in that area of Texas.

Re: Theophilus CHRISTMUS

Theophilus Christmus-born 1829 in Rutherford, North Carolina, married to Cynthia Amanda Elizabeth who was born in 1829 also in North Carolina was the father of my great-grandmother Naomi Obediance Christmas who was born in 1864 in Port Lavaca, TX.
While I don't know we are talking about the same man I don't think the name is all that common and the dates seem to match. I don't know about the event you mentioned but I may be able to find someone who does.
I do know that the family stories about Theophilus Christmus tell of him being a boatwright in Port Lavaca and a circuit minister. My mother said that there are records of him and his ministry in archives of the Baptist Church in San Antonio.
Let me know if this helps you.
Cindy Osborne
cindyosb@gmail.com

PS I still live in Texas and my grandfather, a West Texas sheriff was shot in the back-he would have been Mr. Christmus' son-in-law.
CO
