I have recently found Funeral Notices for the following individuals that for the most part were buried in Mt Carmel Cemetery outside of Wolfe City. These notices are not obituaries but just notices of the funeral that are handed out. My mother's family has been in and around Wolfe City since the mid 1800's and I believe these were saved by her Grandmother Harrell. If you would like a copy please let me know and I will scan it and email it to you.

I will be listing these by last name and date of burial; if no cemetery is mentioned then that will mean they were buried in Mt Carmel.

Bomar, "Grandma" (born Laura A Hobby) buried 3 Dec 1893

Crabb, Mrs R H (born Cordie Robinett) buried 21 May 1908 in Leonard Cemetery

Hanna, Mr W. W. J. (William Washington Jefferson) buried 12 Feb 1909

Hay, Mr J. P. (John P) buried 1897

Hefner, Mrs Gina Williams - 20 Feb 1916

Lovelace, Minnie Reynolds - 31 Dec 1897

Robinson, Laura M - 19 June 1909

Simmons, Miss Bertha (dau of W A Simmons) 12 Aug 1905

Spradling, Mr Ross 29 Jul 1904

Stone, Mrs Margarett A (Williams) - 5 Feb 1910

Wolfe, Mrs Laura Lovella Faison - 2 Apr 1907

The newsprint is difficult to read so where I have a ? mark it means I made my best guess. I printed the obit so if you would like the copy, email me privately at salg2008 AT gmail.com

Greenville Banner, 01.07.1929

Services For W. E. Taylor Held Today

W. E. Taylor, 80, pioneer Hunt county resident, and retired postal employee, died at his home 3(?)104 Bourland St. at 3:30 o'clock Sunday. Mr. Taylor had been in ill health since July and a few days ago contracted influenza, which developed into pneumonia causing his death.

Funeral services were held at the Central Christian church at 2 o'clock this afternoon by Rev. Leo Johnston, pastor and Rev. Leo Co(?), pastor of the Church of Christ. Interment followed in East Mount Cemetery.

He was perhaps one of the best known men in this city, residing here since 1903. He was a faithful Christian, devoted to his family and sincere to his friends. He has been an active member of the Central Christian church since boyhood.

W. E. Taylor was born in Graves(?) County Kentucky, April 29, 1848 and came to Texas when 18 years of age settling near Campbell. He resided there until 21 years of age at which time he was united in marriage to Miss Callie Crump. They moved to Moore's Prairie, where his wife died in 1878. August 10, 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Lucy Pate of Sulphur Springs, who survives him. In 1903 they moved to this city where for fifteen years Mr. Taylor was employed at the local post office in charge of the special delivery department. He retired several years ago.

Besides his widow he is survived by one nephew Roy Pate of Wichita Falls, two brothers, John of Jacksonville and Joe of Wellington, Texas, two sisters, Mrs. O. P. Coats of Jacksonville and Mrs. R. M. Coats of Kirkland.

The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of their many friends in this hour of sadness.

A little girl named Mary H. Anderson lived with her family at or near Commerce in Hunt Co. TX in 1920. She was 5 years old. Her parents were Earnest and Lela Anderson. Is she the same person as Mary Helen Anderson Farris who died in 1998 at Abilene in Taylor Co. TX? The latter married Maldon Floyd Farris in 1933 in Marietta, OK.

In reading the history of clubs/organizations in Greenville, there were no Greenville Masonic groups until later. If it was PEO then the organization would have been elsewhere such as Dallas.

Your research today at the Greenville library is greatly appreciated. The Club name is exactly as it is spelled in the newspaper article, but the club name may have been different. I wondered if it was supposed to be P. E. O.? Or some order of the Eastern Star? My hunch is that the 1891 DMN typesetter put in too many F's.

The Dallas library offers subscription to NewsBank and the Dallas Morning News Archives go way back with actual photos of the newspaper page AND it is searchable by keyword, date, etc. It is a wonderful source. I use it regularly.

There may be some information in church records maintained by the library if they had a church wedding. If you could give me some a little more info, it would help me to look through the records. Does the license show anything such as the name of the person who performed the marriage and whether a member of the clery or where in Hunt Co. the marriage was performed? (I suspect not but thought I would ask to be sure.)

If not, I will look at church records that exist for 1888 to see if there is a record.

The records of the library show that the first women's club was formed in 1891. There was a history of early women's clubs and some partial membership lists beginning with 1891 but Carver was not listed. I asked the librarian in the genealogy dept. whether the initials meant anything to her, and they did not. She could not think of any church or civic group of the era that would have used those initials. The first women's club was part of the Chautauqua movement.

I believe the initials are probably incorrect in the NewsBank article. Perhaps the paper was OCR'd before it was placed online and the initials were read incorrectly. I asked about microfilm of the original newspaper to see if the initials might be different on film. The librarian indicated that Greenville did not have the Dallas newspaper on microfilm but it was available on film from the Dallas public library.

I know this is not the outcome you wanted. If there is something else I can research in our local records let me know. The Greenville newspaper is available beginning Nov. 1894.

Yes, perhaps you can find some membership list on this women's organization in Greenville, TX. I have found out that Mrs R. S. Carver was not a local, but that she was from Missouri. Her given and maiden name is not known to us and if we just knew her first name that would be a big help, but if she somehow used her maiden name as her second name that would be tremendous! If you find records on the women's organization, including the correct name and some of the other members that also adds a great deal of history to the timeframe that Robert Carver worked at the newspaper in Greenville.

Even small bits of information sometimes lead the way to other clues. Thank you in advance for any small bit of information.

Recent article in the Greenville Banner stated an organization is in the process of restoring Hopewell Cemetery. The organization has been meeting at the cemetery on the first Saturday of each month since February. The article stated any volunteers are welcome to join in the cleanup efforts. They are especially looking for groups interested in a project to help. If I lived close I would join the effort. I have relatives in Hopewell Cemetery and am grateful for this effort. One person cannot do it alone.

I was looking at the Hunt Co. board because I reside in the county and was checking to see if I could help anybody. I used HeritageQuest to see if anybody named Sommers/Summers born in Canada lived in Hunt County in 1900. There was nothing. The only Moses Sommers record I could find was for a Moses Sommers, single, living in Boston, MA, born July 1860 in Canada. States he was naturalized and immigrated in 1887. (You may have found this record also.) Unless the immigration year is incorrect, this is probably not your Moses Sommers. I also used HeritageQuest to get a list of everybody living in Hunt County in 1900 who was born in Canada just in case the last name was completely off. There were no possibles going that route either.

Kellogg was a small community. It had a railroad station but never thrived. It's post office was closed in 1905.

Well, I had a note all typed up to send to you and hit something and it disappeared so here goes again. Yes, I would love to have anything you can send me on my ggrandparents and gggrandparents. You have given me so much hope about finally adding information to their pages. I have hit a brick wall as far as they are concerned. I would like to ask a question. Do you have an actual name for the wife of D. G. Smith, Sr.? I have Anna Margaret Burnett. The grave only has A. M. Smith. My cousin gave me this name and I ask him what proof he had and he didn't have any, didn't even remember where he got the name. Also the name M. E. Farrar...I have never heard of it before as a wife of either Smith. Dennis and Anna Maria Ashley were married in 15 Sep 1869 in Lamar County so I guess that leaves a short time in there for him to have married someone else. I hope you can give me some information on William M and his siblings. Our research is very slim for William, Joseph, Margaret, Isaac, Sarah, Henry, Frances and James.

My email address is joyron@classicnet.net. If you don't mind, would you please use it for further correspondence. I can't tell you how much your willingness to help me means to me. Bless you for offering.

Joyce Edgar Phipps

Yes I was a member of the Smith family for 24 years. I have worked on this line since 1982 and was able to get original documents back then. I made an album for the Smith's and have several original marriage licenses in it. I have access to the album and will get that marriage license. I feel you are the deserving party of that since Dennis Jr is not our direct line. Our line was from William M Smith a son of Dennis Sr. I have a note on my family group page that i also have a marriage license of a D G Smith to M E Farrar Aug 23, 1865 in Lamar County. I live in Louisiana not far from Longview Texas and i did speak to my ex husband who said he would get me the album since I have alot more information to add to it. Our son travels alot to Oklahoma where the album is but I also have marriage licenses at my moms in Georgia and i will be traveling there next week to see what I have there. I will keep you updated when I have more news. If there is anything you would like to know I will be happy to share what I have.

Marilyn
Maybe I need to back up here some. I have a "copy" of the marriage license, not the original like you have. Sorry.
Joyce

Thank you for your reply. I also have the marriage license. It is one of my most coveted documents. The original researcher of our Smith line had Dennis married to an Eliza Ray. To be able to prove this was not true was a great experience. I had to get d/c's of all their children but even they didn't seem to know who their mother was except for two of the children. To see Ashley/Marie Ashleys name on them was the best feeling I have ever had. Are you a member of the Smith family? I would certainly love to compare research with you if this is so.
Joyce Edgar Phipps

I am interested in learning more about your James Sidney Alexander. My James Sidney came to Hunt County in the 1860's and was married to Mary Elizabeth Fenlaw in Upshur County. She was his second wife , the first being Margaret Mc Daniel whom he married in 1851-2 in Harrison County, Texas.

He and his first wife had a son named James Sidney also but he married an Iris Pate in Hopkins County. I have not been able to locate my James Sidney prior to 1850 when was was on the census in Harrison county and was at that the time unmarried. All census that I find him listed on by name show that he was born in North Carolina. Could he be a nephew? There were several other Alexander's in Hunt County and in Upshur County around 1850- 1870.
Thank you. All of those Webbs are my ancestors along with the families: Buce, Crawford, and Alexander, who are also buried there. It's a small cemetery and well kept. The only way anyone today can be buried there is if you have family already there. Thanks again for the help. Good luck with your research.

Liz Cox
LittleMup@sbcglobal.net

I don't have any information to help with William Webb. I did find several Webb's in the Clinton Cemetery at www.findagrave.com (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=21...;). There are many Webb's buried here and all of them have photos of their tombstones.

Thought this might help,

Charlie Vines
http://www.genealogywise.com/profile/CharlieVines (a genealogy based social network)

Sorry I am no help, my Webb's came from Dinwiddie County, VA. Have you searched marriage records in VA. Also, some county names changed in VA, you might check that as well.

Dianne Webb Holliday
dholl0717@aol.com
