Loren Vanarsdal would be my great-grandfather as well I believe. My grandfather, Richard "Bud" Vanarsdal (born Oct 16, 1928) was one of his sons I believe. He grew up in Verplanck, NY & married my grandmother Mae (still living). They lived on Long Island, NY and had 2 daughters. My beloved grandfather passed away December 1st, 1992. I know one sister he talked about often, Irma. I know he had quite a few more.

Hello, my daughter Suzy Pulley, who is Jesse's daughter told me that some family of his contacted her. I'm glad she can meet her family. I was hoping and believing that would happen some day.
I am Ann Waller. I married Jesse W. Pulley on January 18, 1980 in Houston Texas, Harris County. My maiden name when we married was Ann E. Borns. Jesse died in a car accident.
I have met his younger brother Steve Pulley who lived with us off and on. Steve later married a young woman named Janet. They moved to Florida to live with Steve's mother sometime after Jesse passed.
Janet later told me Steve passed away from cancer that he got from wallpaper paste. He was doing work for his mother's husband which involved removing wallpaper.
It's really sad that they both passed away. I always wondered about his family since he told me that him and his siblings were split up into foster care.
Suzy told me there is another brother which is great news to know that she still has an uncle who is living and an Aunt named Susan.
Jesse told me he loved his sister Susan and that's why he wanted to name our daughter Suzy. I can't remember the things he said about Susan other than he said she was a nice girl and that he really wanted to see her again.
Jesse did not know he had any other siblings other than Steve and Susan.
Jesse and his brother Steve were very close. I met Jesse when I was 16. He lived down the road from us with some friends and that's how I met him.
I have some pictures to share if you'd like. I can scan them at walmart and put them on a CD and send cd's to the families. I would also like pictures of all his family. I would like Suzy to know her family and I would like to know also since I loved Jesse very much. I have been married twice since then. I have two other children not by Jesse.
Jesse was the love of my life. I loved him so much but he had a drinking problem that also lead to his car wreck. He lost control of his vehicle on a dirt/gravel road he was speeding on and ran into a tree. We were so much in love and that is something I can never forget.
Feel free to contact me at any time. :)

DementFamily Clemetery or Plot at Damon, Texas

I have two obits. that state that Lena Ruth Dement and Nancy Carol Dement Scott are buried in the Dement Family Cemetery.....but I cannot find that cemetery anywhere. It is possible that it is a PLOT but not a Family Cemetery...or it may be on private land. Lena was a resident of Damon, as well as her husband Gordon. I've looked online, but can't find any listing for a Dement Cemetery.......(I do have them on Find-A-Grave)
Lena Ruth Phillips Dement died March 16, 2005 and her daughter, Nancy Carol Dement Scott died at Hubbard, Texas, but is buried at Dement Family Cemetery on November 12, 2005. Gordon Dement died Oct 28, 2002, and I assume he was also buried at Dement Family Cemetery.
Gordon lived at 130 County Rd 264 in the 2002 Damon online Directory. Perhaps they are buried on provate land, or perhaps at one of the other cemeteries nearby in a family plot.......but I cannot find them listed in any online cemetery.
Any help would be appreciated.
I am planning to contact the Funeral Home (Garmany and Carden)in Needville. In the meantime, maybe somone who knows about this family will see this. I am not related to this family, but Nancy was my best friend.
Thanks,
Nancy

I checked with our database at bchm.org and there is
no Meeske listed for Sandy Point Cemetery. The cemetery
covers about 3 acres, we know that more than half the area may have graves. We have not found markers to help identify
areas we know graves are located.

Can you tell me more about your ancestor? Did he own land
in Brazoria County? This may be very useful.

Nancy H.

Dona,

James Christopher was my great-great grandfather. My great-grandmother was Artilda Ann Christopher who married John R. Golden. Since James' death was before 1909 (when Texas started filing)the only way I know would be to go to the Brazoria County Courthouse and try searching records. I did not know that they had sold the land in Lamar Co. in 1885 as there were a number of children still living there in early 1900's. Also, Margarette is buried in an unmarked grave in the Evergreen Cemetery in Paris, Lamar Co, TX. The caretaker said that she was buried is the "singles" section and that no grave marker was ever there.

How are you related to the Christophers and the Ledbetters? What sources do you have on your information on them? I would be glad to share what I have although it's not much.

JSMotheral

My family is part of the McBeth Family from McBeth/Long Pond which is in Brazoria County... We are having a family reunion on August 22nd - the King, Perry & McBeth families. The Kings (which is my greatGrandfather's family) and the McBeths (my greatGrandmother's family) are some BIG families that are woven together b/c some of the King men/women married McBeth women/men. I do not have here at house right now one our family trees that entails the entire family tree from as far as our greatGreatGrandparents who were the original slaves. I'll call my mom this afternoon to see where your request falls.

She died in (old) Velasco which at the time was on the coast at the original mouth of the Brazos River (the area is now Surfside). Most likely she was buried at the cemetery there which was at the northeastern part of the town, near where the Brazos and East Union Bayou merged. Today the cemetery location is north of the Intracoastal Canal near the end of county road 690 (the "levy road" which appears to terminate right on top of the cemetery). I have done considerable research on the Clevelands.

Did you get your question answered on where John Polansky was buried in Pearland, Brazoria County? Most likely he would have been buried in South Park Cemetery.

Do you know if he was related to Robert Frank Polansky (1858-1948) of Burleson County?

I have been researching for information on a newborn boy given up for adoption at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston, Texas in 1951 whose mother was supposedly a Polansky from Burleson County. His adoptive parents died when he was young and he died in 1999 without ever having learned who his birth mother was. Since he was a "cousin" of mine, I would like to find an answer to the mystery if it is a mystery meant to be solved.

I would like to communicate with you if you have any information on these Polanskys.
Regards,
Ray

Re: Capt. Martin Peske

Here is what I know about Martin Peske and his family. My email is tadolph@jw.com

The Peske Family
The Peske family includes our earliest Texas immigrants in our family, including a possible relative, John Peske, (not an ancestor), who served in the Texas Revolution). Only the Johnston family on our Adolph side has earlier American immigrants.
The Peske family comes from Germany. In the 1840's, Martin Peske identified his birthplace as Prussia, and that eliminates some of present day Germany, but it does not offer much help in identifying his hometown.
The name Peske is spelled and misspelled many different ways. It appears as Pascal, Paschke, Paske, Peschke, Pescki, Pesk, Peske, Peski, Peskie, Pesky, and Pesque.

John Peske
John Peske deserves special mention, although he is not a direct ancestor. John Peske is probably the brother of our ancestor, Martin Peske. In 1849, John Peske was the godfather of Martin’s son, John Frederick Peske, at his baptism at St. Joseph’s Church, in Brazoria.
John Peske appears in Texas in April 1833. John was a colonist under Stephen F. Austin. He qualified as a colonist as a single man. He was from Germany. The State of Coahuila and Texas granted to John Peske a quarter league of land near the headwaters of Chocolate Bayou (present day Brazoria County). The quarter league included land on both sides of the bayou. The land included "arable land one labor" and "pasture land 5 labors." The land is now in the Manville Alvin School District. It is 1,111 acres. Steven F. Austin signed the grant April 15, 1833. Two years later, on October 20, 1835, John sold the land to Robert Peebles for $200. Actually, the $200 covered overdue government fees. John Peske could not write. He had a friend sign the deed.
John Peske’s service in the Texas Revolution was after the battle of San Jacinto. John served three months, from September 1, 1836 through December1, 1836 in Captain Burnett's company.
John Peske may also be the seller (the name is John Peascod) of land in Old Velasco May 28, 1840. Velasco is directly across the Brazos River from Quintana, where Martin Peske lived.

Peske Descendants:
I have lost track of the descendants, if any, of our Peske relatives. It is quite puzzling. As you will see in the materials on Martin Peske, he had several children, and I am able to track them until the late 1800's. Then, I lose them. At the wedding of Arthur M. Adolph and Gladys J. Johnston, on June 22, 1921, in New Orleans, one witness was Inez Peske. I have been unable to find her in any other records.
In 1875, a Mrs. C. Peschke appears in the Galveston directory at 533 E. Broadway. A Frederick Paschke appears in Houston deed records in August 1877.

Michel Peske
Michel Peske is the earliest Peske that I know about. He is identified on the marriage certificate for his son, Martin Peske. I assume that Michel was born in Prussia, probably around 1780-1790. He married Mary ___ and they had at least one son, Martin. They may also have had another son, John Peske, the Austin colonist. I believe that Michel and Mary did not come to America. I do not know when or where he died.

Martin Peske
Birth and Family of Origin
Martin Peske was born in Prussia (Germany). His grave shows his birthdate as August 15, 1809. Other records suggest that his year of birth may have been 1808 or 1812. His parents were Michel and Mary Peske. In the Galveston 1860 tax records, he appears as Martin G. Peske.
Residence and Land Ownership
Martin Peske probably grew up in Prussia. After March 2, 1836, and before October 1, 1837, when he was about 28 or 29, Martin came to Texas. He probably came to join his brother, John in Brazoria County. However, he may also have lived first in Burnet County where he eventually owned 960 acres. He appeared in Brazoria County in 1839 (making a claim for land in Burnet), and he was first taxed in Brazoria in 1841.
Martin lived in Quintana, in Brazoria County, from at least 1841 to 1853. Then, beginning in 1853, he lived in Galveston, on 18th Street, between Avenue E and Church Street. He died in Galveston in 1860.
320 acres in Burnet County:
Although Martin probably first settled in Brazoria County, he first owned land in Burnet County. In January 1839, Martin purchased from Robert Moore 320 acres in Burnet. I do not know if he ever went to his land in Burnet. Current Burnet County is north of Travis County, but when Martin obtained his land, Burnet was larger than it is now. His land was probably halfway between Austin and Fort Worth, possibly in present day Hamilton County. Martin never recorded the deed for this purchase. Martin’s heirs sold this land 47 years later, and the purchaser filed the 1839 deed at that time (1886). Martin’s ownership of this land is mentioned in History of The German Element in Texas From 1820=1850 by Moritz Tiling Moritz (1913).
640 Acres in Burnet County:
Martin obtained a second parcel of land by patent in Burnet later in 1839. The Republic of Texas granted Martin a Class 2 grant of land. The Republic granted Class 2 grants to persons entering Texas after the signing of the declaration of independence (March 2, 1836, but before October 1, 1837. A Class 2 grant covered 640 acres. On December 2, 1839, the Board of Land Commissioners of Brazoria County issued Certificate No. 374 to Martin Peske -- a headright for 640 acres of land. The land, as described in a later certificate, is in the Travis District, Burnet County, on the east bank of the Colorado River, about 12 miles south, 18 west, from Hamilton. This land may now be in Hamilton County. In 1843 and 1844, Martin’s 960 acres in Burnet appraised at $480.
Martin lost the original certificate for his 640 acres in Burnet. In 1851, he sold the land, and he had to go through a five month procedure to complete the sale. On June 7, 1851, he obtained a certificate from the Clerk of the County Court of Brazoria County acknowledging the original certificate. On August 20, Martin signed an affidavit that he had lost the original. He filed the acknowledgement and the affidavit in Galveston County on October 15, 1853. Finally, on November 5, he completed the sale for $110.
Quintana - Lot 1, Block 2:
Martin first appears in Quintana tax records in 1841, but he may have always been in Quintana beginning in 1836-37. Martin lived in Quintana until about 1853-54. Quintana is in Brazoria County, on the west side of the mouth of the Brazos River. Velasco is on the east side of the river. The mouth of the Brazos has shifted since then, but the town of Quintana still exists.
Quintana was a development by Stephen F. Austin, Samuel May Williams, and Thomas McKinney, intended as a port town for shipping the cotton from the Brazos cotton plantations. Quintana developed after neighboring Velasco, principally because it was located on a portion of Austin’s premium land. Development began in 1835, but no plat of the original town plan survives. A town plat prepared in 1916 purports to show the original townsite, the river-front tract, and some acreage. However, plats of both Velasco and Quintana were evidently available as early as 1837.
The name of Quintana is obscure, but it is likely that Austin intended to honor Andres Quintana. He was the Under Minister of Foreign Relations of the Mexican Republic in 1822 was instrumental in the final authorization of Austin’s original grant. The name of Andres Quintana Roo has also been suggested, as both he and his wife Leona Vicario were prominent in the early period of Mexico’s war of independence, as was her father. To honor the wife, the Legislature of Texas and Coahuila in 1827 attempted to change the name of the capital, Saltillo to Leona Vicario.
The site of the original town is now Quintana Beach Park, where several old homes are preserved. Foremost among the homes is that of Henry Seaborn, who was a witness at Martin's wedding and half-owner with Martin in the sloop Alamo. In fact, it is likely that Seaborn’s shipbuilding business made the Alamo . The home at the park did not exist during Martin’s lifetime, but it is interesting to see the home of Martin’s partner and best man.
On November 27, 1847, Martin obtained from Guy M. Bryan (as trustee for James F. Perry, the executor for the estate of Stephen F. Austin) legal title to a one acre lot in Quintana: Lot 1, Block 2. I do not fully understand the circumstances of the acquisition. I believe that he owned this land as early as 1841, because the tax records for 1841 show Martin as owning one town lot in Quintana. My guess is that the legal formalities were not completed until 1847. The 1847 proceedings appear to relate to an unknown obligation by Stephen F. Austin to Martin Peske. Martin Peske proved that he had a right to the land, so he received title to Lot 1, Block 2.
The tax value of this lot changed as follows:
1841 $300
1843 $400
1844-49	$200
In 1850, this lot began to be valued with his three new Quintana lots. The four lots valued at:
1850 $500
1851-53	$800
On March 23, 1857, Martin sold the land for $400. For some reason, this sale was not recorded until December 1, 1868, eight years after Martin died. The sale probably was somehow connected to Martin’s acquisition of a part of the Stringfellow plantation, since the deeds were filed the same day.
Quintana -- Lots 6, 7, 8, Block 46:
On July 10, 1850, Martin paid $75 for three more lots in Quintana from Emily Perry, the wife of James Perry. These were Lots 6, 7, and 8 in Block 46 in exchange for $75.00. On the same day, Martin’s brother-in-law, John Bullacher, bought Lots 11 and 12, Block 52 from the same seller. For 1855 taxes, after the Quintana Hurricane of 1854, it valued at $50. In 1856, Martin paid taxes only on Lot 7, valued at $50. Given this value, perhaps this truly covered all three lots.
Quintana Hurricane of 1854:
In 1854, a tremendous hurricane destroyed much of Quintana. Martin’s timing was perfect since he left Quintana the year before.
Stringfellow Plantation
In 1857, Martin paid $160 for eight acres in Brazoria County near the town of Brazoria. The purchased land was taken out of Chesley Stringfellow's plantation in such a way that Stringfellow's remaining plantation was as nearly square as possible. On February 21, 1859, Martin sold this property for $190 to Conrad Ahlbrecht of Brazoria County. Martin went to Brazoria County to sign the deed.
Brazoria County Acreage:
In his estate proceedings, Martin’s widow listed acreage in Brazoria County purchased of Philip Dwyre (or Dwynn) for Martin’s interest in Block 2 of Quintana. This may have been the acreage in the Stringfellow Plantation.
Medina County:
In 1859 and 1860, Martin Peske paid taxes on his one-half interest in 640 acres that he and his wife received from the estate of his father-in-law, Justin Bulacher. The land was on Chacamon Stream in Medina County. For tax purposes, it valued at $1 per acre. Martin’s brother-in-law, John Bullacher, owned the other 320 acres. The Bulacher Family chapter shows the location of this land. This property appears in proceedings relating to the estate of his wife and the guardianship of her daughter (a minor) in 1880.
Galveston lots
Beginning in 1853, Martin began buying land in Galveston. Also in 1853, Martin began paying personal property tax in Galveston, so he probably moved during 1853. His purchases of Galveston land included:
Lots 6 and 7, Block 438:
March 26, 1853, Martin paid $1500 to John L. Sleight for this land with a dwelling house and outhouse. I believe that this land is at 18th Street, between Avenue E (Post Office) and Church Street. For 1853-58 taxes, its value ranged from $1,500 in 1853, to $4000 at his death in 1860.
The increased value in 1860 is probably due to improvements that Martin had built on this land. On February 20, 1860, Martin obtained a loan of $555.50 from F. H. Merriman and Joseph Braums to build on his property. He tendered the property as security for three notes of $181.50 each due May 20, 1860, August 20, 1860, and November 20, 1860.
Martin died before the last of the above notes came due. His wife must have paid this note as the lots remained in his estate. The lots had then four dwelling houses and improvements. The property also appears in proceedings relating to the estate of his wife and the guardianship of her daughter, Jenny Madden (a minor), in 1880. The heirs sold these lots for $1166.67 in 1883.
Lot 297, Section 1, Galveston Island --- TWICE SOLD!
This lot appears in his estate. He first paid taxes on this ten acres in 1857. It valued at $100 from 1857 until his death in 1860. His widow listed this land in the estate. However, this is confusing because it also appears that Martin sold this property on March 23, 1860 for $115 to Charles Black.
Section 2 - Lot 242 and Section 4 - Lot 297:
On April 30, 1855, Martin bought two lots on Galveston Island from Clement R. Johns, as trustee of the Nashville, Texas Emigrant Company. He bought Lot 242 in Section 2 for (1) $39 and (2) a promissory note due in twelve months for $78 (a total of $117, an odd sum). On the same day, he bought Lot 297 in Section 4 from the same seller for (1) $28 and (2) a twelve month promissory note for $56 (a total of $85). Clement R. Johns appeared before the county clerk in Hayes County - San Marcos and acknowledged the deed. It was filed in Hayes County May3, 1856. Peske filed the deeds May 3, 1856 in Galveston County. From 1857 until his death in 1860, Martin paid tax on the 13 acres of Lot 242 Section 2, valued at $100. These 13 acres were on Clear Creek on Galveston Island. On June 31, 1860, Martin sold Lot 242 Section 2 to John S. Sydnor for $80.
Lot 314, Section 1, Galveston Island:
In 1854, Martin paid back taxes on this property for the years 1852-54. The property valued at $900. I have not found any record of his acquisition or sale of this property. During 1856-58, he paid taxes on this property as “agent fo E. Esher.” It was then ten acres valued at $100. Martin sold this lot to Charlie Black March 23, 1860. [Check this.]
Merriman Deeds:
In Galveston, there is on file a deed of trust from Martin Peske and wife to F.H. Merriman November 15, 1859. I do not yet know to what property this relates. There is a second Peske-Merriman filing February 21, 1860 of a deed of trust dated the previous day.
Unknown Additional Claim:
Martin’s widow listed in his estate a claim to a 640 acre certificate for a headright issued 13 Dec 1839 No. 4 from Brazoria County. I could not read the county where the land was located. (The Brazoria County land commissioner could issue grants to land throughout the nation. In fact, the Brazoria commissioner issued Martin’s other certificate.) Since each person was entitled to one grant, and since Martin had sold his own grant, this claim must have been against some other person’s headright. This headright probably is not the same as Justin Bulacher’s headright, since it issued December 1839. Justin did not obtain his headright until 1844.
Occupation, Personal Property:
Martin Peske was a ship owner and captain, a merchant, a family grocer, and a rancher. Beginning in 1846, he was a ship owner. He described himself in the 1850 census and in some Galveston directory entries as a ship’s captain. At least in 1847, and perhaps before, he harvested cotton. Beginning in 1855, he operated a grocery from his home or an adjoining building on 18th Street, between Avenue E and Church Street in Galveston. In 1857, he paid taxes on this merchandise valued at $300. He owned a one-half interest in the sloop Alamo, one to three slaves, nine to twenty cattle, and a silver watch.
Martin died without a will, and his widow, Frances, had to go through administration proceedings to sell land and other property, such as the sloop. The court set bond at $15,000, which suggests a value of $15,000 to $30,000. His household furnishings included one parlor set, two bedroom sets, one dining room set, and kitchen furniture.
Tax Records:
Martin often paid his poll tax, both during the Republic years and during statehood. In addition to his land, tax records show some of Martin’s property:
1843-44	a silver watch
1845 4 cattle
1846 1 horse, 9 cattle
1847-48	15 cattle
1849 10 cattle
1850 12 cattle
1851-53	20 cattle
During each year from 1849 to 1851, Martin paid tax on a $1000 note that he held at interest.
The Sloop (or Schooner) Alamo:
By 1846, Martin became half-owner of the sloop Alamo, with Henry Seaborn. The Alamo is sometimes called a schooner. As noted above, Seaborn was Martin’s best man, and Seaborn owned a shipbuilding business in Quintana. Before Martin died, Henry Seaborn sold his interest (at least after 1852). I do not know who Seaborn sold to, but at Martin’s death, Martin’s partner was Charles Druick. Mr. Druick appears in the 1859 tax records as Martin’s agent for the Alamo.
The Alamo appraised alternately between $1000 and $2,000 from 1846 to 1856. In 1857, it valued at $600, but from 1858 to his death in 1860, it again valued at $1000. After Martin’s death, his half interest sold for only $250. Martin regularly paid taxes on his half interest in the sloop.
Martin served as captain of the Alamo for awhile. He appears in the 1850 census as captain of the Alamo in Galveston port. I am not sure what the Alamo looked like. In the 1850 census, the Alamo was home to Martin Peske, as captain, two sailors, and one cook. In 1861, the ship was at the wharf of J. C. Kuhn. After his death, his widow, Frances, had some trouble selling Martin’s interest. After several attempts, she finally sold Martin’s interest to Thomas Dagman.
Slaves:
The first record that Martin owned any slaves occurs in 1847. In Galveston on April 28, 1847, Martin loaned James F. Perry $1,000. (Recall that Martin obtained his Quintana town lot also from Perry.) In return, Martin received all the cotton on Perry's place at Peach Point. Martin also received two slaves: Solomon, age 29 and Mary Ann (Solomon's wife) age 19. If Perry paid Peske $1,000 plus 10% interest by January 1, 1848, Martin would return the slaves and cotton to Perry. I do not know what happened to this transaction. Martin’s 1849 and 1850 Brazoria County tax records list “money at interest $1,000,” so I presume that Perry did not pay the $1,000 in time to reclaim his slaves or interest. However, this tax record could refer to another loan.
In 1849 and 1850, Martin paid taxes for a slave valued at $275 and $300. In 1851-54, Martin owned three slaves, valued at $1000 - $1600. From 1855 until his death in 1860, Martin paid taxes on one slave valued at $200. Strangely, the slave is not mentioned in his estate.
Friends and Acquaintances:
The records disclose several persons who were either friends or constant acquiantances of Martin Peske. These include his brother-in-law, John Bullacher, who lived with Martin and his family in 1850. As mentioned already, Henry Seaborn was a longtime friend. Finally, there was Chesley Stringfellow. Stringfellow witnessed Peske’s slave-¼crops transaction, and ten years later, Martin bought part of Stringfellow’s plantation. It is fairly certain that Martin met Stephen F. Austin. He bought land from Austin’s heirs.
Wife and Children
Martin married Frances Bulacher August 28, 1844, in a civil ceremony before L. B. Grissom, Justice of the Peace for Brazoria County. Martin had just turned 34, and Frances was 18 or 19. Frances had lived in Texas less than one year. She was Catholic, and perhaps uncomfortable with the civil ceremony. A year and a half later, they remarried in the Church before Father John Arands in St. Mary’s Church in Galveston. Henry Seaborn, Martin’s partner in the sloop Alamo, was a witness. Martin and Frances had at least six children. They were married 16 years, until his death in November 1860.
Their children included:
1.	Mary A. (“Mollie”) Peske - Born February 24, 1847. Baptized April 18, 1847 in St. Mary’s Cathedral in Galveston by Father John Arands. Her sponsor was Carolina Dirks. Mollie married William J. Crossman May 30, 1866, at St. Joseph’s Church in Galveston. One witness was Henrietta Peske, possibly her sister Hattie.

2.	John Frederick Peske - born February 1849. Baptized March 18, 1849 at St Joseph’s Church in Brazoria, the first church in the Galveston-Houston diocese. The priest was Father James A. Miller, and his godparents were his uncle, John Peske, and Harriet Gautier. In 1872, he appears in the Galveston directory as “Joseph Peschke - printer, Galveston Civilian.” Later directories list J. Frederick Peske. In 1875, he began working for the Galveston News. In 1876, he lived with his brother Frank at their parents old home. In 1882, he lived with his sister, Frances, and her husband, Henry Clay Johnston.

John Frederick Peske married May E. Dowse (from Louisiana) in 1879 (license issued November 4, 1879), in Galveston. The 1880 census shows the couple in Galveston. In 1880, he was a printer. He disappears from Galveston directories after 1884-84. The 1900 census shows him living in Dallas with his two daughters, Allice Peske, born November 1871 in Louisiana, age 29; and daughter Nellie Peske, born July 1878 in Louisiana, age 22. This in itself is confusing since he did not marry until 1879!

3.	Harriet Peske - born January 5, 1851. Possibly named for her brother’s godmother, Harriet Gautier. Baptized April 23, 1851 at St. Joseph’s Church in Brazoria. The priest again was Father James A. Miller. Her sponsor was Alzado Matson. Hattie married William A. Coates.

4.	Frank A. Peske - born 1856. December 20, 1876, he married Mary J. Spickernagle (from Texas, parents from Germany). They had at least two children, Frank (1878) and Charles (1880). They lived in Galveston at least as of 1880. In 1875, he worked as a photographer at Blessing & Sons. In 1880, he worked at Roses Photo. He disappears from Galveston directories after 1881-82.

5.	Frances Katherine Peske - born February 21, 1858. Baptized (as Kate Francis Pesque) at St. Mary's Cathedral April 5 (4?), 1858 by Bishop J. M. Odin, first bishop of the Galveston-Houston Diocese. Her sponsors were James and Maria Catherine Connor. Frances married Henry Clay Johnston in 1875.

Death: Martin Peske died from consumption (tuberculosis) at the age of 51 on November 6, 1860. He was buried that same day in the Galveston City Cemetery, at Range #1, plot no. 31. The cemetery is at Second Avenue and Broadway. Martin’s death appears in several records, including the diary of Joseph Franklin. Franklin was a German-born Galveston lawyer who came to Galveston about 1838.
Map showing location of Martin Peske's grave in Lot 31 in Galveston City Cemetery.
MARTIN PESKE
Photographs of his tombstone in Galveston, Texas. Taken July 1994.
Galveston County Internment Records 1859 to 1872 (research by Brian Adolph, July 5 and 6, 1994). Map of Peach Point, Stringfellow Plantation, etc.
Frances Katherine Peske
Birth and Family of Origin
Frances (“Fannie”) Katherine Peske was born February 21, 1858 in Galveston, Texas. Her parents, Martin Peske and Frances Bulacher moved to Galveston from Quintana five years before Frances was born. Her father was from Prussia, and her mother was from the town of Rixheim in Alsace.
Frances was the youngest of five children. She was the third girl. Her father died when Frances was 2, and her mother quickly remarried, this time to an Irish Catholic, John Madden. However, her step-father died when she was eight, and her mother did not remarry. She had a half-sister and a half-brother, but the half-brother died when seven months old.
Residence and Land Ownership
Frances lived in Galveston until the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 killed her son and daughter-in-law. Frances was 42. She, her husband, their son Fred, and their granddaughter, Gladys Johnston, moved to New Orleans (where her husband had family). She lived there until her death.
In Galveston, Fannie lived at the following:
1858-82	18th Street, between Ave. E and Church Street (86 and 89 18th)
1882-83	421 w. Church between 33d & 34th
1884-85	89 18th Street between Post Office and Church
1886-87	North Side of West Ave. M1/2 between 32d 33rd
1888-92	827 East Ave. I near 9th
1893-1900	718 and 720 Broadway (before Hurricane)
1900 2111 Ave. M1/2, Galveston (after Hurricane)
1910 1332 South Rampart Street, New Orleans
Fannie and her husband owned their home in Galveston in 1900. In 1910, in New Orleans, they rented their home.
Upon the death of her mother in January 1880, Fannie and her five siblings inherited two lots in Galveston (18th Street between Post Office and Church) and 320 acres in Medina County (southwest of San Antonio). Fannie’s grandfather, Justin Bulacher, obtained the Medina County land when he came to Texas in 1844 as part of the Castroville Colony. The estate valued at about $3000.
Occupation, Slavery, Character
Fannie was a housewife. I have found no record of any other occupation, but after her step-father’s death, her mother ran a grocery and took in boarders. Fannie probably helped.
Fannie was baptized in St. Mary’s cathedral in Galveston. She was baptized as Kate Frances Pesque April 5, 1858, by Bishop J. M. Odin, the first bishop of the then diocese of Texas (now Galveston-Houston). I have found no record of her marriage in any of the Catholic churches in Galveston, and her husband was not Catholic. I believe that she did not continue as a Catholic as an adult.
The 1870 census shows Fannie 12 years old and in school. She could read and write.
Until his death in 1860, when Fannie was 2, Fannie’s father owned a slave. The slave does not appear in his estate in January 1861.
Galveston Hurricane 1900:
My only information about Fannie in the 1900 Storm comes from letters by her husband to Julius Schroeder in Chicago. Fannie lost her son Harry, his wife Minnie, and their infant son Harry. She also lost her home. On September 19, her husband wrote describing the night of the storm:
Harry, Mina and baby boy were drowned in the storm of Saturday, 8th Sept. and their house with all they had in the world was swept away. Their little three year old girl, Gladys was saved by me and is with me now. This thing is terrible and beyond description - Harry was making for the U.S. Quartermasters Dept. and was sent out to Fort Point at the end of the island to help save property and everything was swept away and Harry has not been heard from since. I and my family left our home to go to a place of safety and as we went to Harry’s house, we took Minnie and her two children with us as the water was coming into her house. We all went, as we supposed to a place of safety, and might have been so if another house had not dashed against it and knocked it down, with about 15 people in it at the time, when the house went to pieces. We all went with it into a raging torrent full of floating timber and the wind blowing 100 miles a hour. I jumped with the little girl in my arm. Mina and baby and my young son went together and my wife by herself and we floated all night in the water on pieces of houses and it was so dark we could not see each other. When daylight came we found that Mina and baby were gone and no trace of them have been found since. I lost everything I had in the world and have Mina’s little girl to take care of. I am going to stay here but will send my wife and son and the little girl to New Orleans to one of my brothers til I can see my way clear.
By October 17, 1900, Fannie was in New Orleans, with her in-laws. She, her 21 year old son Fred, and her granddaughter, Gladys, went to New Orleans, while her husband stayed in Galveston to arrange affairs.
Husband and Children
Fannie married Henry Clay Johnston, a native of New Orleans and the son of Irish and Scotch parents. They married February 9, 1875 in Galveston before A.M. Fouchard. Henry was 26, and Fannie was 16 (two weeks shy of 17). They were married 40 years until his death March 17, 1915 in New Orleans.
Henry and Fannie had three children, but only two survived childhood. Their children were:
1. Harry Peske Johnston -- born October 12, 1875
2. Fred Johnston -- born March 16 or 18, 1879. He married Antoinette Montalbano, and they had one daughter, Mary Frances Johnston, who married Robbie Morris. The Morris’s had a daughter and a son, Robbie. Mary Frances Johnston and Robbie Morris divorced, and she went to California where she worked for Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox Film Corp. in Los Angeles, California.
3. Mabel Lee Johnston -- born September 8, 1882. Mabel did not survive childhood.
Fannie and Henry raised their granddaughter, Gladys Johnston, in New Orleans until their deaths.
Death
Fannie died after the 1910 census and before the 1920 census. She probably died in New Orleans.
From Artie Adolph:
My Grandma Johnston (Fannie Peske Johnston) was a very active woman. She lived near Lee Circle, on Carondelet and Howard. She was known as "Fannie."
From Bob Adolph:
I remember the "Peske" name. I used to visit Peskes in New Orleans.
Theophilus Hudgins death 1883

Looking for information on the death of Theophilas Hudgins which occurred on or about 26 October 1883 in Brazoria County TX. Wondering if local newpaper extant to that era exists which may contain obituary?? Any record of his death would be appreciated. He was born about 1831 in Gates County NC. He enlisted in Waul's Texas Legion (Willis' Cavalry Bat.) from Fort Bend County TX and served throughout the Civil War. After the war, he married (12 Feb 1868) Orelle Ann Nickelson (b. 1846; d. 1929) who was the widow of another Brazoria County Civil War veteran, George Tennelle Davis. Theophilus Hudgins was known as "Theo" and erroneously referred to as "Theodore" in the 1860 Brazoria County census, so it is possible that these names may be associated with him on death record/obituary. Thank you!
I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. On 15 Dec 1890 Retrieve Unit Guard James or Joe JACKSON was returning to the prison from the express office in Oyster Creek with $300. He was found shot in the face with a shotgun outside the gate. A carpenter at the prison, Bill Davidson, was arrested for the murder. I am searching for family members of JACKSON, his place of burial, and the disposition of the case against DAVIDSON.

I haven't kept in touch with dad's side of the family much since he passed away. I did see alot of them at my brothers funeral. Seems like that is the only way to get to see everyone. The police did find out who did it and what was done. His trial will be later this summer or early fall. I didn't change my name, the GLASPHE is a combo of first and last names used with my work ID and email.

Earnie

Me and my brother grew up in Caldwell, Texas and moved back there in 1969 after my parents divorced. I know that we visited up in the Tyler area when we were little because Frances Glaspie said she remembered me from when I was little and my aunt Brenda recently mentioned it as well. I don't have any memories of the visits. I haven't seen Glaspie family members for about 18 years. Your father Henry was around 56 when he passed away - did he have cancer or was it his heart? I noticed the spelling of your last name is Glasphe - did you change it or is it just a typo? How is your grandmother Frances Glaspie? I'm sure that is painful for you, so please forgive me, however I wanted to ask, did the police ever find out any more information about your brother's death?

Have a great day cousin.
Kerri
