Do you have a will for Pleasant Thurman died abt 1880 in Dyer Co, TN? His wife's name was Emily Lamar. Children would include Lewis Alfred Thurman. Don't know names of any other children. Any information you can provide would be great appreciated.

Pleasant Thurman was ny husband's greatgrandfather. Lewis is buried here in Dyer County. My husband's grandfather was Austin Odell Thurnan. Lewis's son. Apparently Lewis remarried an Ada Cook.
We have never been able to fing\d much on Pleasant. If you have any info, we would appreciate it.

Do you have anything in your files on Mary Thurman (or Thurmond) who married Ferdinand Dawson in 1883. I think she may be the daughter of Thomas Thurman, but no definitive proof yet. Thanks!

Sorry, but I don't have a Mary Thurman from around the date you state. Do you know where she was born or died?

Mary Thurman/Thurmond

I have unverified information from a distant cousin, handed down through my husband's grandmother, that states Mary Thurman was born 10 May 1866 (location unknown) and died 23 Mar 1899 (in Dyer).

The only thing I have seen first hand is from the 13 Jan 1883 State Gazette stating "Mr. Ferd DAWSON was married to Miss Mary THURMOND last Wednesday night by Squire Wat SAMPSON".

Thomas Thurman, who had a daughter Mary of around the right age, lived near the Dawsons in the 1870 census and is a likely candidate. Do you have anything on Thomas? Thanks.

What I know is that the Thurman family of my first husband came to Dyer Co, TN from Spencer Co, IN.

Pleasant Thurman b abt 1814 married Emily Lamar 15 Jan 1843 in Spencer Co, IN and they had the following children:

Nancy A. b 1844
John N. b 1846
William F. b 1848
Mary J. b 1850
Aaron Franklin b 1852
Mandy E. b 1854
Louisa M. b 1859
Lewis Alfred b 1870

Bette Brandel provided the following information March 96:

"We were never able to determine Pleasant's parents. The THURMAN's,
Schoolfield's, and Lamar's (along with the Lincoln's) settled in Spencer County in the early 1800's, and it appears they may have moved together from KY and even earlier from VA. We do know that Pleasant and some of his family along the Criswell's, Tharp's, and Schoolfield's came down the Mississippi River on flatboats when Lewis Thurman was about 8 years old (abt 1878) to West Tennessee to cut lumber and settled in the hills of Dyer county, where Pleasant is buried.

Source: Indiana Marriages: 1818-1850

THURMAN, Pleasant Lamar, EMILY 01-15-1843

Lewis Alfred Thurman married Mattie Schoolfield (date unknown). The only child I know of is Austin Odell Thurman b 10 Sep 1895 in Dyer Co, TN and d 22 Nov 1968 in Dyer Co, TN. He married Merlie Joy Childress in Dyer Co and they had the following children:

Curnie Alvin b 1915 d 1999 (father of Bette Brandel noted above)
Flora Lavelle b 1917
Clara Alaverne b 1921
Doris Celeste b 1924
Rev. Thomas Childress Thurman b 1926 (my former father-in-law)
Joy Austin b 1933

I don't know if any of this helps you but maybe gives you a little more information on the Thurman's in Dyer Co, TN. My daughter still lives in Dyer Co.
