Mengel/Manley Connections

I have death certificate for my grgr grandmother, Mozella/Mosella Manley Hensley and it has her parents as John Manley (which I know her was a physician/minister in Dyer Co. b. 1824 d. 1872 buried Fairview Cemetery, Newbern, Dyer Co. TN as are other family including Mozella and her husband) and has her mother as Margaret Mengel (is hard to make out last 2 letters) I know that Margaret married 2nd a William Stone and had several more children. They were in the 1880 census but she was deceased by 1900 because he is widowed with his daughter living in house. Have yet to find anything on her death or where she is buried. All census' say she was born in TN so wondered if any Mengel's lived in Dyer Co. in 1800s and if so, are any descendants still there that could possibly help me. This has me stumped because I can find nothing.
Appreciate any help I can get. (because John Manley was a minister, would think there would be a family bible with records in it)

dear Mary

Sorry it has taken me this long to see your posting. Your GGmother Mozella is also a relative of mine. Her mother is from my side of the family. Her mother's name is Margaret C. Menzies, and yes the family was in Dyer County from about 1860 through the current time. Margaret's family were Scots and the whole clan was "in the neighborhood". Margaret was most likely born in Rockingham County, North Carolina and raised in Decatur County, Tennessee. I have other info on Mozella and her family, in fact the past few days I have been working on some of her family including her husband Columbus ( found out he is from my home state of West Virginia). Let me know if you get this message and if you are interested in more info. Also, if your agreeable, I have a few questions I would love to pose to you. Hope to talk again.

Wow, this is great. Know it was an old posting, so thought I was only one interested in my greatgreatgrandmother. Yes, Columbus was born in WV to Icabird "Bird" Hensley and Nancy Webb. I am still researching family in WV.
I knew Mozella's father was Rev. John A Manley and mother was Margaret ?but only got the info from Mozella's death certificate and was not legible. So it was Menzies, glad to know. Grandpa Columbus moved to TN after his stint in Civil War.
You can email me direct or post here.
Look forward to hearing from you.

I remember my first contact with another person researching the Menzies family and I was excited. The individual lived in Memphis and and had posted a message 7 years prior to my finding it. He had given up hope of ever hearing from someone and then I responded. I think he was more excited than I. Just to let you know my level of excitement here; you are the first living member of the Menzies decendants that I have found alive! outside of my immediate family. Regarding Mozella, you mentioned 4 children the oldest being your great greandfather. I assume he was William Earl? Mozella and Columbus had 2 other children, Liilian A. and Byrd Clark, both of whom are buried with their father. There names and dates are cut on the same stone and I assume they share a common plot. It is impossible to check the grave records for Fairview as they resided in City Hall and it and all records burned down in 1950. You can imagine the choas that ensued trying to figure out who owns what lots; in the old section they just guess! After Columbus and Mozella were married on 16 Jul 1874 in Jefferson Co, Ark they moved to Jackson Co, Ark and you can find them in the 1880 US census in Village Township, pg 510B, family 148. By 1883 they moved to Dyer Co, TN. I find Mozella in the 1900 Dyer Co census but have not been able to find her after that. William Earl moved to Chattanooga by 1900 and also appears in the 1910 census for Chattanooga with Victoria and 5 daughters. They must have moved to Alabama before the 1920 census as they no longer appear in TN.
In your posting I noticed you were wondering about the inventory of fairview in Newbern. It exists with pictures, if you haven't seen it look at the website www.rootsweb.com/~tndyer/.
In my research I have also found in rootsweb.com the Hensley family, the best looking one appears to come from Ruth Spurlock and I would encourage you to look at the family tree and drop her a line. She has lots of info.
Lastley, any idea how Columbus came to be in Arkansas?

Bill,
So glad you responded to me. Just so much info. Columbus and his brother, William B Hensley (also a Civil War hero)both left WV after the war and moved to Ark. William owned several plantations and the he owned is now known as Hensley, Ark. Mozella and Columbus married on the plantation. Not sure what took them to TN, perhaps because her family was there. Here is what I have on their children.
1. Lillian b. 20 Oct 1875 Ark d. 10 Sep 1882 TN
2. Gwendolyn "Gwenny" b. 30 Jun 1877 Ark d. 16 Jun 1957 LAA., CA m. 14 Jul 1897 TN, John A Ball of TN (they had two children that I know of)
3. William Earl (my grgrandfather) b. Nov 1879 TN (this gives us a general idea when they left Ark) d. 19 Jul 1957 B'ham, Jefferson Co., AL m. 1902 Victoria Kalleen (they had ten children, two boys and eight girls) Grandma Vic's father was first supt. of Bonny Oaks, a children's home in Chattanooga.
4. Byrd Clark (you know about him)
5. Salena Estella "Aunt Stella" b.18 Apr 1885 TN d. 14 Jan 1967 CA m. Lucius Ely Alfred (he was a career military) both buried Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Francisco. They had two daughters, Lucia and Lois. 1910 census Chesapeake, Elizabeth City, VA has Mozella living with them. Mozella was also in 1930 census with them in Chattanooga, yet Grandpa Hensley has her in their household as well in B'ham. Believe she was visiting but actually lived with Aunt Stella. Mozella died at Stella's home in 1935.
6. Believe son was born Columbus B Jr yet everyone called him Uncle Chris. (Christopher Columbus :)b. 1 Oct 1887 TN d. 3 Jun 1960 Santa Clara, CA. I have two great Aunts still living and they say he did marry/divorce and they think had a daughter but I could find nothing on her.
Columbus' brother, Capt. William B Hensley was to most outstanding and fascinating child of all Bird Hensley's and Nancy Webb's children. He married three times (first two died from birth complications) and he only had one daughter from first wife that lived. Bible records indicate that he did have a son that died shortly after birth. He was very devoted to his family and realizing that Barboursville, Cabell Co, WV had little to offer as far as education and social life, had his family visit the plantation often, which is where many of the girls met their husbands. William included his father and living siblings in his will, as well as monies for Mozella and her children after the death of his third wife, Nora, but she outlived them all. Being as there was no children by Nora, family had often wondered who inherited his land after her death. His only daughter, Willie May Hensley that married Austin Lee Wigal and they had a son and daughter, so assumed it was them, but do believe Nora outlived them as well. William is buried in a Mausoleum on his plantation.
I had been at a standstill regarding Mozella's mother because I could not decipher her maiden name, now that I know is Menzies, have a whole new world of research to do. When Mozella's father died, the children became guardians of a M.C. Manley and there was a Menzies mentioned in the Bond, but it did not click that probably a relative also.
Better close for now. I am now trying to locate her death certificate and watch the name Menzie jump out at me now that I know.
Thanks would appreciate anything you can provide me on this line.
Mary

Bill,
I have tried so hard to retrieve my emails from a computer crash and even went to MSN site, but only saves so many emails. Dang, started deleting after unnecessary things to keep important.
As for our family, I am back to my research on my grgrgrgrandparents, Menzie/Menzies. I now know that Margaret Menzie did m.2 William A Stone and had two more children after Grandpa John Manley passed away in 1872.

email me at southerncomfort1@msn.com and we can reconnect. I have spent quite some time trying to reconnect with you so hope we can still share.
Mary
