Need help finding info on Rose Crawford Pierce. Born Apr 1897 Columbus Co, NC; m. 1915 to Archibald Troy Pierce. Family legend says she was sent to Pageland to have a baby. Why? I do not know. But it was said she died. Did Pageland have a home for unwanted babies during the 1910's or 20's. I do know her husband was married again by 1920. The timing had to be between 1915 and 1920.

Hi there,

I checked St. David's Parish Register from Cheraw. There are many Ellerbes in the book. Unfortunately, I couldn't find reference to a Mary who matched your details. There are also many references to Thomas and William, but they all refer to their business as vestrymen or church wardens and provide no details about their birthdates, spouses, middle names, etc. Pls. let me know if there is another Ellerbe who interests you. I could also not find a reference to Samuel Spencer.

The public library in Cheraw has some good information. They have a small room with many reference materials.

Hi,

I am looking for information about Jack Thomas Parker who, I am told, was born in Chesterfield County. He spent most of his adult life in Virginia Beach, VA. He died in 1975. I have heard from various people that his family may have used the name Powell, been involved in robbing trains, that his brother murdered their father, etc. I would like to know what of this is true.

Any information you have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Daniel

I'm writing regarding Jackson and William Wallace of Chesterfield, SC. My husband, W. Keats Sparrow, descends from their sister Tabitha Wallace who married Patrick Sparrow. Patrick died before 1840 and Tabitha and the younger children moved to Hinds Co., Mississippi, to be with her daughter Elizabeth who married Samuel M. Phelps.

We are trying to discover additional information on this Wallace family. We believe Jackson, William, and Tabitha's mother was named Elizabeth but we don't have her father's name.

If you know anything more or can direct us to someone researching this family, we'd be very appreciative.

Many thanks.............Liz Sparrow

I happened to be looking up some information about a cemetery in Chesterfield County and found references to your Mary Ellerbe. This was from information submitted about Thomas Ellerbe (born 20 March 1743 in SC and died on 16 September, 1802 in Cheraw, Chesterfield County, SC) and Obedience Gillespie (daughter of James Galespy and Mary Young) by Lola Spencer. This information was submitted for publication in the 2005 Edition of the Chesterfield County, South Carolina Heritage Book. The most wonderful part about this information is . . . she also submitted the sources for her information! I think this book is still available through the Historical Society of Chesterfield County and their telephone number is 843-623-9673. If this was not you that submitted this for the book you can contact me for more information at sharonf_corey@yahoo.com.

Did you know the Chesterfield County SC courthouse & all its records were destroyed by fire in 1865?? Your best bet would be the SC State Archives whereas that facility has microfilmed info concerning Chesterfield County dating back to 1785. Please email me at genealogy1959@yahoo.com & I'll email you my website regarding Anson County NC genealogy which contains an article titled, "Facilities To Visit When Researching Chesterfield County,SC" & also you should come do research at the Anson County NC Register of Deeds office & Anson County Clerk of Court & Anson County Historical Society office for the families mentioned in your message. Even thou there was an courthouse fire in Anson County in 1868 the land records were saved & date back to 1745 & the Wills were saved which date back to 1751. When you email me I'll recommend a nice bed & breakfast located within a block or two of the research facilities I've mentioned here in Anson County. The best to you with your research -- Steve Bailey, Anson County, NC

Our family history tells us that my great, great, great, great grandfather was a George Parker who came over with the red coats. He was a mill wright and was enticed by the colonials to desert on the promise that when we won he could have all the land in SC he could walk around in a day. He walked around 1000+ acres in Chesterfield. Parkers still live on what is left of that land today. My ancestor, George's great grandson, Henry Duncan left and moved to Morven, NC. Henry Duncan is my great, great grandfather. I have found George's son, George A who was born in 1800, but cannot find a record of his father, who is supposed to be George the deserter.

Benjamin Bennett Graves was born in Montgomery Co., North Carolina in 1831, and Synthia Sellars was born in Chesterfield Co., South Carolina in abt. 1832. Their marriage was short lived, as Benjamin Bennett Graves is thought to have died in service to his southern heritage in abt. 1865, and then Synthia raised her children in Chesterfield Co., South Carolina. These six children, with descendants listed on site, gave rise to the large Graves clan that inhabited central and western Chesterfield County as well as Union and Anson Counties of North Carolina - and beyond

Come visit the site.
1900, 1910, or 1920 census lookup? Margaret Ashby Campbell?

Looking for a Margaret Campbell, maiden name Ashby that would have been around 48 in 1900. She was married to an E. Thompson Campbell that I believe came from Chesterfield County,S.C. and died sometime between 1873 and 1880. In 1880 Margaret was on the census for Coddle Creek, Iredell Co., N.C. listed as 28, widowed with two sons James Vermont Campbell age 8 and William Evans Campbell age 6. Head of household was female L.Thompson age 45 and female C.Benfield age 45? and a male Lawrence Benfield age 2.
I believe her husband E. Thompson Campbell came from the Chesterfield area. When both James and William were older each of them had children born in Chesterfield Co.. Did Margaret move there with them? I cannot find a trace of Margaret Ashby Campbell after 1880. She could have possibly remarried, but obviously I have no idea.
I hope this gives enough information that might allow some kind person to help me further my family research. I know nothing earlier than what I have posted here.
Thank you,
Eileen

Early Chesterfield County Schools

I am trying to locate ANY information and/or photographs of early schools in Chesterfield County for the Chesterfield District Chronicle (quarterly publication of the Chesterfield District Chapter, SCGS). I am having much difficulty finding any information on the early schools. I can only find lists of some of the old school through USGS GNIS and the Insurance Photos of Schools on the website of the South Carolina Archives & History Center. I know that other schools did exist, but no one seems to have any information on them, not even the Chesterfield County School Office.

If you have ANY information or know of someone that does, PLEASE email me at cdcscgs@yahoo.com or call the Chesterfield Archives and Genealogy Library at 843-623-2244.

Some of the older schools that I am interested in are included in the list below. I have the location for these schools. The information that I am seeking is: What was the school house made of, who were some of the teachers, and what were some of the special events or most memorable moments. But, ANY information will be most appreciated and proper credit given in this issue of the Chesterfield District Chronicle.

Antioch School
Bay Springs School, Bear Creek School, Beaver Creek School, Bethel School, Bethesda School, Bills Bay School, Black Creek School, Britts School, Buffalo School
Cat Pond School, Center Grove School, Center Point School, Center School, Chapman Training School, Clark School, Coulter Memorial Academy, Cross Roads School
Davidson Grove School, Drucilla School
Fishers Hill School, Five Forks School, Flint Ridge School, Four Mile Branch School
Goodman School, Green Hill School
Harris Creek School, Hopewell School
Juniper School
Laland School, Linton School
Macedonia School, Mangum School, Marburg School, McLain Grove School, Middendorf School, Montrose School, Mount Elon School, Mount Harmon School, Mount Olive School, Mount Zion School
New Hope School
Oak Hill School, Orange Hill School, Oro School, Ousley Dale School
Palmetto School, Pats Branch School, Piney Creek School, Piney Grove School, Plains School, Pleasant Grove School, Providence School
Road Branch School, Rock Springs School
Saint James School, Saint Peters School, Sandy Run School, Shiloh School (school my Mom attended), Smithville School, Snow Hill School, Spence School, Spring Hill School, Stafford School, Sweet Home School
Timmonsville School
Union School
Vaughn School
Wallace School, Wamba School, Wamble Hill School, Wexford School, White Oak School, White Plains School, Winzo School
Youngs School
Zion Hill School, Zion School, Zoar School (school my Dad attended)

I have attached a photo below that Edgar Rivers gave me of the Old Chesterfield School House in Chesterfield.
This bright idea just poped into my head. Maybe they listed in the census & the last name so badly mispelled that you didn't recognize the names as you scrolled through. Ancestry.com is a great invention but its often better to reveiew a reel of microfilm

I cannot agree more with you about the Ancestry versions of the Federal Censuses. Not only did the "PAID" transcribers miss families and entire pages, but they also misspelled so many names (at least in mine and my husband's families) that it is ridiculous. I know this also infuriated Elizabeth Shown Mills. In one of the many courses/lectures of Elizabeth's that I attended she related the story about having witnessed one of these "transcribers" at their job. Noticing the misspellings, she brought it to their attention and not only did they did not even care . . . they didn't bother to correct them! These transcribers were obviously NOT Genealogists at Heart!

Anyway, have you attended IGHR, NIGR or a NGS or FGS Conference? If so, maybe I saw you there! Just in case you haven't been to a National Archives Branch before to do research, plan to do some research about the branch itself, policies and such beforehand. Even at state archives it takes me almost one full day just to get oriented and get the materials I want before I can even begin the actual research.

And last but not least, don't forget about the state censuses for South Carolina which are available at the SCDAH in Columbia. The population returns for 1839 are available for Kershaw and Chesterfield Districts. The agricultural returns of 1868 and population returns of 1869 are available for almost every county in SC and the agricultural and population returns of 1875 are complete for Marlboro as well as a couple other counties.

One more bit of advice that Jim Pigg probably mentioned as well . . . and that is about the many state line changes in that area. So look for family names in counties in Union, Anson and Richond Counties as well as the counties surrounding Chesterfield County. My WHITE family line as well as my THURMAN family line lived right along the state line, so I always include North Carolina in my research.

If I can be of any more help, please contact me off-list at sharonf_corey@yahoo.com .

Very true. But the trick, as Marsha Hoffman Rising and others have noted, is not to automatically assume that they were missed but to be diligent in checking options. I know of cases in the US and UK, for instance, where ancestry.com's version of the census missed pages that are actually available via other sources. If I knew that my folks WERE missed, that would be fine (well, it wouldn't be, but I could live with it). But I can't assume that, just because I'm not able to find them, that they're missing.

Thanks. I appreciate the information.
It's the 1850 census that's been driving me crazy. I did find some of my Cheraw folks in the 1860 census (badly mistranscribed last name) but so far nothing for 1850. I've got one entire family (Enoch Spinckes Jordan, wife Mary and family) and part of another (Nancy Horn and whichever children/granchildren might have been visiting) who are among the missing. I know they were there in 1850 because Nancy (and other family members) were receiving letters from her son Daniel A. Horn who was chasing gold in CA. Enoch Jordan didn't die until 1851 (and there are comments about this in DAH letters). Other family members (Reids, Liles, Littles) seem to be accounted for.

I've consulted with James Pigg on this already and also read through every piece of the identifiable Chesterfield County census that I've been able to find. I'm thinking about hitting the National Archives branch here in Philly to see what information there might be on the enumeration districts for that year and region. I feel like I must be missing something obvious.

Post Offices used as locations for the 1860 Federal Census for Chesterfield County were: Cheraw, White Plains, Chesterfield Court House, Mount Croghan, Harris Boan or Bone (this is a different one but looks like it would be the Patrick area which was referred to as Steer Pen), Jefferson, Old Store (later Pageland).

James C. Pigg mapped out the Chesterfield County, SC Census locations as Cheraw, Pee Dee (south of Cheraw to Society Hill), Steer Pen (south of Patrick area), Court House (Chesterfield), Cole Hill (south of Chesterfield to north of Patrick), Mount Croghan, Old Store (Pageland area), Jefferson, and Alligator (McBee area). I can send you a copy of this map if you send me your email address. Mine is sharonf_corey@yahoo.com .

St. Bartholomews Parish was near Charleston and Beaufort, SC which in some searches I have done for the name of Chesterfield, SC it will ask for which one. The first one that comes to mind is on Mapquest and the second choice for Chesterfield, SC takes you to the one in Beaufort County, SC .

The 1850 Census looks like it was jumbled together but if you search carefully you will find the people you are looking for & be able to figure the districts by the family groups.

Steve Bailey, Anson County, NC

Can anyone tell me for sure if the town of Cheraw and immediate surrounding area was included in the 1850 census? I've got a couple of folks who I know were there in 1850 but haven't been able to identify any pages from the "Cheraw district" that I can see in 1860. I'm looking for Horn and Jordan specifically in this district.

Sorry, but I don't know anything about a Joshua Knight, my ancestor is Richard C. Knight, son of Moses Knight and Temperence Eddins. I do Not have Joshua listed in the children I have for Moses and Temperence. You can find Moses Knight (1798-1881) listed in the James Knight Bible and the Aaron Weaver Knight Journal on the Chesterfield County S.C. website. You can find Richard C. Knight and wife Sarah America Wimberly listed next door to Moses and Temperence on the 1850 Chesterfield Co., S.C. census, then Richard & family are on the 1860 & 1870 Sumter County Alabama census. Richard & Sarah's daughter Emma Whitfield Knight married John Bethel Roberts in 1876 Lauderdale County Mississippi, they are my great grandparents. I would be happy to look at your tree if you think there is a connection, just send me the site. Wish I could be of more help, good luck.
Helen

Bakers in Chesterfield County in 1800s

I am searching for children and grandchildren and other information about Rachel Baker, listed in Chesterfield, the mining district, in 1850 and in Lancaster in 1860. Her granddaughter, Molcy (Mary, Molly) was listed in Keshaw in 1870-1900. I SUSPECT that Darling(married mary copeland and listed in Chesterfield county in both 1850 and 1860)is Molcy's brother. I'm pretty sure Jane and Louis Baker are Molcy's sister and brother too. Since I am at a dead end on Molcy, I'm hoping to find a connection in another part of the family. I don't know if Rachel married a Baker or if her maiden name was Baker but I know she is Molcy's grandmother. I also suspect Alex and Henry Baker of Lancaster census 1860 are in the family but I don't know how they are connected. Please help! This is driving me crazy.

I have information about Joshua Knight and Jane Baker, based on census records and some links I found on ancestry (may have been your site since this query is quite old.) Check the 1850 census for Chesterfield County and you will find Jane living with her grandmother Rachel and also her daugher Amanda. Joshua Kinght was living nearby. They never married. Legend has it that they planned to but he drowned (don't know if that is true). My line is through Jane's sister Molcy, who never married as well. I'd be glad to send you a link to my ancestry tree if you'd like to see what little I've got. If you have found more, let me know as well.
Carol

I have gotten as far back as Darling Baker (1828) married Mary Copeland, Joseph M Baker (1850) married Roseanna Hunter, William Thomas Baker (1871) married 3 times my line is Henrietta Hunter, Charlie James Baker (1899) married Lois Holden, Lewis Charles Baker (1921) married Coleen Hall. If you know anything I would greatly appreciate the info.

Tanya
