Dear Fran,

Apologies for the late reply.

There are many Gaineys in the book. Do you have some specific names in mind?

A John W. Mills and William Mills are in the book.

A John Boan, aged about 65 years was buried on 23 July 1857.

There are a Charles C. Purves, an Easter Purvis, a James Purvis and a Mary Purvis.

A John and Sarah McMillan are mentioned (husband and wife).

Please advise if you would like more info on any of these.

kind regards,
Carlos

Carlos, thanks so much for the looking these up. I know you must get a lot of requests and could be using that time to do your own research.

All those you found are related, so any information you are willing to spare the time to share would be appreciated. As for the Gaineys/Ganeys, I'm looking for James H. Gainey and his wife Adeline Waters, as well as Isaac Gainey whom I believe to be his father. I can be reached by e-mail at Confabu@aol.com.

Thanks again,
Fran

I am looking for references to the following people: Mary Ellerbe, a daughter of Capt. William E. Ellerbe and granddaughter of Capt. Thomas Ellerbe (approx 1750 - 1808). She married Samuel Spencer.

I am going to be in Chestefield County in December. Are there any good resources - libraries, clerk's offices, other places of interest?

Did you know the Chesterfield County SC courthouse & all its records were destroyed by fire in 1865?? Your best bet would be the SC State Archives whereas that facility has microfilmed info concerning Chesterfield County dating back to 1785. Please email me at genealogy1959@yahoo.com & I'll email you my website regarding Anson County NC genealogy which contains an article titled, "Facilities To Visit When Researching Chesterfield County,SC" & also you should come do research at the Anson County NC Register of Deeds office & Anson County Clerk of Court & Anson County Historical Society office for the families mentioned in your message. Even thou there was an courthouse fire in Anson County in 1868 the land records were saved & date back to 1745 & the Wills were saved which date back to 1751. When you email me I'll recommend a nice bed & breakfast located within a block or two of the research facilities I've mentioned here in Anson County. The best to you with your research -- Steve Bailey, Anson County, NC

I happened to be looking up some information about a cemetery in Chesterfield County and found references to your Mary Ellerbe. This was from information submitted about Thomas Ellerbe (born 20 March 1743 in SC and died on 16 September, 1802 in Cheraw, Chesterfield County, SC) and Obedience Gillespie (daughter of James Galespy and Mary Young) by Lola Spencer. This information was submitted for publication in the 2005 Edition of the Chesterfield County, South Carolina Heritage Book. The most wonderful part about this information is . . . she also submitted the sources for her information! I think this book is still available through the Historical Society of Chesterfield County and their telephone number is 843-623-9673. If this was not you that submitted this for the book you can contact me for more information at sharonf_corey@yahoo.com.

Hi there,

I checked St. David's Parish Register from Cheraw. There are many Ellerbes in the book. Unfortunately, I couldn't find reference to a Mary who matched your details. There are also many references to Thomas and William, but they all refer to their business as vestrymen or church wardens and provide no details about their birthdates, spouses, middle names, etc. Pls. let me know if there is another Ellerbe who interests you. I could also not find a reference to Samuel Spencer.

The public library in Cheraw has some good information. They have a small room with many reference materials.
