In RI it's 50 yrs for deaths and 100 years for births & marriages. So if it is later than these dates, you have to go to the health department, or the city/town hall.
If it's before these dates, they send them to the archives.
72 years is the cut off date for the US census to be made public, although other locations may use that cut off date
as well.
