Nancy......I appreciate anything that you can send me. My Mother's family name originally was Gottwald but I heard that used Gottvald because they didn't want to sound German. They were Slovaks. My Grandfather Adam and his Wife Karolina came from Austria and settled across the creek from Yukon around 1913. Please e-mail whatever you can. This has been a difficult battle for me to try and find these answers. Thanks again.
I have my mother's 1934 yearbook from Sewickley.
Agnes Gottwald is a graduate, but unfortunately she is one of 7 graduates "not pictured".
She belonged to the Addison Club(literary) her Fresh, Soph and Junior year and the French Club Junior and Senior year.
I can try to scan the photo of the French club and send it to you. I also have the 1932 yearbook and I can try to send the Soph class picture although it is very small.
Nancy

Hi Alan,
I have to laugh at your response, because the lady that I am working with said almost the same thing about the people up there. No one is helpful. The transcription that I have is from a DAR survey made in 1961 by ladies of the Massy Harbison Chapter, New Kensington, PA. I am quoting from the page "(This is a family cemetery, near Markle, in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, PA. It is about two miles across fields from the highway, in a heavily wooded area.)
It is not critical to have gravestone photos because I have this cemetery survey from 1961. But the genealogist in me doesn't like to leave any stone (ha, ha) unturned!
Thanks for your response,
Phyllis
The Woodlands, TX

I don't know where it is. I know of a farmer who told me that ARTMANs are buried on his property in Allegheny Township, but it isn't very close to Markle. I have been a faithful customer in his store for many years. I asked if I could photograph the gravestones, but he just turned and walked away from me. All these "locals" tend to be very unccooperative. He told me the "Allegheny Township Historical Society" went around and recoreded all the information from isolated burials on farms, and then made a report. I told him that those "old reports" get lost all the time." That's when he turned and walked away from me. None of these people care, really. By the way, I never even heard of that historical society.

As an alternative, you might want to contact Victorian Vandergrift (loctaed in Vandergrift). I would write them a letter and ask them to circulate it among their volunteers. One of them might know.

Another possibility is to see whether Victorian Vandergrift or Apollo Librray have a "family history" for the ARTMAN surname. Both of these places have family histories of surnames in the local area. These were donated by people who researched the surname. ARTMAN is a very significant surname in this area. If you try this you can just call those two places because all they have to do is walk over to the shelf and look for the ARTMAN name on the shelf.

I don't know of the name your searching for but I can tell you that you may run into some snags when searching for Kingview it has a postal address of Scottdale which is Westmoreland county and it's in Upper Tyrone which is Fayette Co. There were alot of Italians in Kingview there still are a few familys.. The Zaffina's (still living), Fratto's(still living), Copetti's(the ones in kingview have passed), Stella's(one still living in area) and the Sirianni's there are many younger ones but those family were around for generations if you can connect with one of them they may be able to help you.. Also try old mining websites you would be surprised the info you can find on some areas there. There was a mine in Kingview on Dexter Rd. If you have any questions about the area feel free to hit me up I grew up there..

I'm sorry to say that the only yearbook we have, which is my husband's, is much more recent.

What I would suggest is that you put a query out there specifically for yearbooks around that time. Another suggestion is to check your local libraries -- either Greensburg/Hempfield or Norwin. Just be sure to mention in your query that it is Sewickley High School in Herminie.

I hope this helps.

Marge, thanks for the reply. Is your year book from Sewickley High and if it is does it list more than the Senior Class. Everything I have indicates that my Mom (Agnes Gottvald) graduated in 1934 so it's possible that she was a Sophmore or Junior in 1932.

The building which housed Sewickley High School has since been torn down. The gymnasium section is still there, and it is in Herminie. You might try Yough High School for any information.

Good luck in your search. Hopefully, someone was interested enough to preserve some of this information. I have my parents' diplomas and yearbooks from 1932, and I'm sure there aren't many around.

1. From the traffic light in Leechburg, drive west on Rt 56/356. You will immediately cross the green, metal bridge across the Kiskiminetas River, thus going from Armstrong County into Westmoreland County. (You are driving on Main Street.)
2. After driving 0.7 miles from the traffic light, turn right where the small green sign says "West Leechburg 2 -->"
3. Follow this 2-lane road up the hill for 0.4 miles. Near the top of the hill turn left onto Pleasant Hill Road. (There is no stop sign for you here.)
4. Follow this 2-lane road uphill for 0.1 miles until you come to a stop sign near the top of the hill. Turn left at the stop sign to stay on Pleasant Hill Road.
5. Drive straight ahead for 0.2 miles. You will see the cemetery on your left.

I have traced my Haben family to Civil War Major James F Ryan of Mckeesport. His commanding officer was General Alexander Hays. Ft Hays in Kansas was named after General Hays after he was killed in the Civil War. Major James Ryan took over for a short time.

The Haben's and Ryan's are buried together at St Josephs in Mckeesport. Major James Ryans brother was Bishop Stephen V Ryan of Buffalo NY.

I still don't know if the Civil War Pension Board was really headquartered in Pittsburgh or not. I am glad you found your records.

Hi,

I was cleaning out my emailbox and found your message. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. And thanks for writing.

My husband and I have solved the mystery of his 4ggrandfather John Nichols' death, finally.

It took going to the National Archives and looking through his service and medical records to find that he actually died Sept 25, 1864 and that he was mistakenly buried under the name of John Mickles in Arlington National Cemetery. We found there was no John Mickles in Co.K 11th Pa Inf. and that someone had misread Nickles for Mickles.

The paperwork on his death did not catch up to his company until March of 1865 when someone caught the mistake and corrected it. But somehow the date of the paperwork in March became John Nichol's death date in the Bates book on Pennsylvania units in the Civil War.

We've applied to have a new headstone for John, but haven't heard anything yet.

Thanks again for your reply.

Huntingdon Twp.). The ROBISON family moved from PA to Richland Co., OH abt 1818.
I believe Hettie's husband John was the son of John QUERY (b abt 1770-1780) who is listed in the 1820-30 census in S. Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA and were living 1 farm from Thomas Robison.

Hi Paula,

Did you get any luck with this research?

Do let me know as I am researching a branch of the Glendenings where James is born in Barton St Mary in 1796. His family moved to Darlington and he then came south and was married in London in 1825.

His father was John and his mother Jane (Jackson) and we have his father with just one link to Carlisle on the birth of a child I believe.

Now it could be that this John was an older brother of your James and I would love to know if you have developed your tree as I am stumped at present.

Please respond even if you have got no further.

I am researching the Spielman (Speilman, Speelman, Spellman, Spillman) and Lose (Loos, Loss, Loose) families that settled in Mr. Pleasant Township, Westmoreland Co. Pennsylvania in the late 1700s early 1800s.

Here's what I know:

Johannes "John" Spielman b. abt 1745 in Germany or Switzerland came to PA either by himself or his reported father Johan Peter Spielman b. abt 1726 in Germany or Switzerland, (possibly the immigrate listed on the Ship Louisa's arriving 3 Oct 1753 to Philadelphia, PA).

Johannes "John" was married to Catherine Konig (Koenig, King) b. 13 Feb 1753 reportedly in either Nazarth Twp., Northhampton Co, PA.

Their son Jonas was b. 18 Sep 1783 reportedly in Nazareth, Northampton Co, PA. He married Esther (or Ester) Lose (Loose, Loss, Loos. I am trying to positively identify Esther's parents. Esther and Jonas most likely lived and died in Mt. Pleasant Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania where atleast four of their children (John Michael, Magdelena, Jonas and possibly a Geo. Jacob) were baptized at the First Lutheran Church.

One of Jonas' sisters, Hannah Margaret Spielman married a Henry Lose - b. c. 1786, Mt. Pleasant PA. Henry was reportedly the son of George Lose b. abt. 1760.

I believe that Esther was the sister or cousin of this Henry.

Any info on either of these families would be appreciated.
I'm helping a friend find his grandfather's family. Paulina Sever, who was born in Austria (may have been Slovenia) about 1879 and came to America to join her husband John in 1911, may be a sister of my friend's grandfather.

Paulina Sever and three children, Johan - 9 years old, Josefa - 8 years old, and Paulina - age 3 months, arrived in New York City on 23 July 1911. Paulina Sever's place of residence is listed as Toplice, Austria. The passengers' list further states that she and the children were born in Podkray and that Paulina's mother's name was Josefa Brvar.

They traveled first to Somerset, CO to join John but are found in Hempfield, Westmoreland, PA by 1920. John was a coal miner.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Kathy
