Richard L. "Dick" Temple, 71, of Lairdsville passed away at his home, Wednesday evening, Oct. 28, 2009. He had been in ill health for the past year.
He was born Feb. 7, 1938, in Moreland Twp., Lycoming County, a son of the late Archie E. and Alberta S. (Magargle) Temple. April 19, 1958, he married the former Helen L. (Kessler) Temple, who survives.
He was a member of the Moreland Baptist Church. Dick was the owner of Richard L. Temple & Sons Logging, which he was a subcontractor with Dwight Lewis Lumber Co., Hillsgrove for the past 34 years. He graduated from the Hughesville High School, Class of 1956. Dick was the only student in his class from first through eighth grade at the one-room school house of Frenchtown School, near Lairdsville.
He was a lifetime member of the Lairdsville Volunteer Fire Co. and had served as past Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, President, Vice President, and Forest Fire Warden. Dick also coached the fire company softball team and "Dick's Woodwackers," a tug-of-war team. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, horse and pony pulling, collected and restored antique tractors, hunting and telling old-time stories with family and friends. Dick was very proud that his dad taught him at a very young age the skills of butchering. Together they would butcher for many neighboring farmers. Dick passed this knowledge and skills of butchering to his own children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Raine K. "Tink" (Lonnie) Ohnmeiss; four sons, Richard D. "Rick" (Andrea), Robert G. "Rob" (Dee), Rex L. and Ryan L. (Tanya) Temple, all of the Lairdsville area; another one of the boys, Andy Hill; six grandchildren, Rae Ann, Nichole, Rilynn, and Rochell Temple, Colin and Carter Ohnmeiss; a step-grandson, Wes Shultz; two sisters, Geraldine Swisher, Unityville and Pauline Bogart, Turbotville; and two brothers, Glen and Vernon Temple, both of Muncy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth VanHorn and a half-brother, Max Temple.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 East Water St., Hughesville with Paul Shaner, officiating. Burial will follow in the Lairdsville Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
