GREENSBORO — Mrs. Lois S. Martin, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2009, in the palliative care unit of Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro after suffering what was to become a fatal heart attack earlier in the month.
Mrs. Martin was born August 31, 1917, in the Oak Grove community of Stokes County to the late Arelious Herbert and Emma Lou Johnson Simpson.
Being one of eight children, she experienced a wonderful childhood growing up on the family farm among relatives and friends.
She was a gentle and faithful wife, mother, homemakers, and neighbor in the Bald Hill community where she spent her adult life on the Martin family farm surrounded by dear and loving in-laws and relatives. Falling a victim to dementia in her latter years, a move was prompted to the Carolina House of Reidsville four years ago, where she adopted her caregivers and fellow residents as family and home until her passing.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Henry Taylor Martin, in the winter of 1988, and only son, Van Taylor Martin, in the summer of 1992, along with brothers, Harold, Ralph, Hudson, and Lamon, and sisters, Hildreth (infant) and Irene, over her lifetime.
She is survived by her older sister, Louise Simpson Crews, of Mayodan, two sisters-in- law, Mildred R. Martin and Daisy M. Ore, along with several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was buried alongside her husband and son at Comer's Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member until her failing health. A private memorial service is scheduled for a later date.
Condolences may be addressed to Louise S. Crews, 133 Ridge Road, Mayodan, NC 27027, while any memorials may be made to the cemetery fund of Comer's Chapel Baptist Church, 1990 Bald Hill Loop Road, Madison, NC 27025.
Colonial Funeral Home of Madison carried out the wishes of the family.
