MOUNT AIRY - Mr. R. L. “Sol” Solomon left his earthly journey on Wednesday, January 20, 2010.

Sol was born in the Sandhills on April 25, 1939 to Rev. Furman and Bera Mauldin Solomon. He was raised on a farm in Moore County, moving to the Concord/Kannapolis area as a teenager. In 1969 he moved to Mt. Airy to manage the bowling center which he later purchased. He loved his bowlers.

He was also associated with Scenic Ford and Patterson Inc. In the past eight years he worked with his wife in the appraisal business. Sol was very quick witted and sometimes could find quarters behind the ears of small children.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Trudy Solomon of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa and Chris Maginnis of Winston-Salem, Sonja and Dean Snow and Crystal and Steven McHone all of Mt. Airy; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Dawn Solomon and Michael and Nina Solomon all of Mt. Airy; grandchildren, Josh and wife, Nikki Inman of Austin, TX, Todd Solomon of Charleston, SC, Erika Solomon, Austin Warren, Colby Solomon, Taylor Solomon, Korrine McHone all of Mt. Airy; step-children and spouses, John and Jan Casstevens, Robin Pope and Jody Casstevens all of Mt. Airy; step-grandchildren and spouse, Nate and Stephanie Maginnis of Greensboro, Winston Maginnis of Boone, Chase Cox, Max Pope and Cameron Pope all of Mt. Airy, and a step granddaughter due in June, Ava McKinley Casstevens; step great granddaughter, Laila Maginnis of Mt. Airy; brother and sister-in-law, Dee and Sylvia Solomon of Baltimore, MD; sisters and brothers-in-law, Gerri Kizer of Sanford, Sharon and Wilford Lassiter of Vass, Elaine and Ron Smith of Lumberton.

A gathering to remember Sol will be held on Saturday, January, 23, 2010 at Mount Airy Country Club. Family visitation will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday with the service to follow at 12:00 noon. Death records were not kept until 1913/1914. Try calling the secretary at Grace Chapel in Lee County. It is a large church and should have good records.

Have located a death record for Julius C. YOW, b. 1-14-1870 in Moore County, NC and d. 4-8-1920 in Mt. Airy, Surry County, NC (book 6, page 38). Shows was married to a C. A. (unknown maiden name) and was a son of Isaac YOW (NC) and Dortha MANUS (NC). He was a cabinet maker and is buried in White Plains community which is west of Mt. Airy.

The courthouse burned Sept 5, 1889, but death records weren't recorded in NC until 1913, and birth records was 1914 (those dates could be reversed).

Best bet is to look at old newspapers of that time frame, probably out of Raleigh.

Seagrove - Nora Upton Mabe, age 91, formerly of 205 Davis Road, died Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at FirstHealth Moore Regional in Pinehurst.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 2, 2010, at Dover Baptist Church, where she was a member, with Dr. Don Davis and the Rev. Boyd Byerly officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

She was born in Moore County and was the eldest child of the late John and Ina Hogan Upton.

She married Paul C. Mabe on April 12, 1941 and was a homemaker. Preceding her in death was her husband, Paul, sons, Dalton Mabe and Larry Mabe, both formerly of Asheboro, infant twin boys, brother, Lloyd Upton, and sister, Rocity Bodsford.

Surviving are son, Randy J. Mabe and wife, Mildred, of Seagrove; daughter-in-laws, Kathleen Rushing Mabe of Asheboro, Dianne Bullins Mabe of Asheboro; sisters, Eva Auman (Clarence) of Seagrove, Mabel Maness (Willie) of Seagrove, Myrtle Mabe of Star, Dorothy Snow of Elizabeth City; brother, Farrell Upton of Seagrove; grandchildren, Michael Mabe, Connie Mabe, both of Seagrove, Karen Kearns (Anthony), Teresa Greene (Bobby), Richard Mabe (Melinda), Bradley Mabe (Jennifer), Amanda Mabe, all of Asheboro; great-grandchildren, Brittany Mabe, Matthew Kearns, Justin Greene, Devan Mabe, Jarett Mabe, Kailey Mabe, Brianna Mabe, Sadie Mabe.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Mabe, of West End; two sons, Brandon Mabe of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Bobby Shelton of Mooresville; and two daughters, Deborah York of Greensboro and Wendy Crone of Mooresville; a step daughter, Sherri Bray of Reidsville; and seven grandchildren.

Hi. I was married to Lloyd Martin Seawell III in the eighties and had the privilege of meeting Lloyd Martin Seawell Sr. and sharing a few holiday dinners at his house in Winston Salem, NC. Lloyd Sr had 3 children - Lloyd Martin Seawell II who died at age 29 in a car crash, Samuel Seawell also deceased not sure when, and Patricia "Aunt Pat" Seawell who is still living in Winston Salem. Sadly, Lloyd III passed away this past July at age 59.

EDEN — Catherine Boyte Haynes, 96, formerly of 702 Hodges Street, passed away Monday morning, November 2, 2009, at Morehead Nursing Center.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 6, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Overlook Cemetery.

Mrs. Haynes was born June 25, 1913, in Moore County, N.C., daughter of the late Thomas McPherson and Maggie Caviness Boyte.

She was a member of Spray United Methodist Church and a 1980 retiree of Fieldcrest Mills.

Surviving are her two daughters, Almeria Stewart and Helga Gillespie and husband, Daniel, of Eden; sons, Philip C. Haynes and wife, Linda, of Fredericksburg, Va., and Harry B. Haynes Jr. and wife, Glenda, of Texas; brother, J. Walter Boyte of Supply; nine grandchildren, Benjamin, Melanie and Rebecca Gillespie, Celeste Smith, Venecia Collins, Daniel Haynes, Melita Crilley, Michelle Haynes, and Heather Hale; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Willie Boyte; and five sisters, Verla B. Hill, Nancy B. Haynes, Bertha B. Robbins, Maggie B. Haynes, and Bessie B. Stultz.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday evening at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Helga Gillespie, 142 Benjamin Road in Eden.

I am looking for Hadley Craven's birthplace. He was born on August 17, 1913. I think it might have been in Moore County, North Carolina. His wife was Aleen Furr. He died in Winston-Salem, N.C. on October 21, 1968 at the Forsythe Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem where he lived at the time. He was a groundskeeper for a country club.

My great-great grandfather was Thomas Dick Moore, half-sibling to Zachariah. Both were sons of Pinkney Moore. I believe Thomas Dick Moore married Margaret Hannah Wood, daughter of Thomas J Wood, who would be Priscilla's brother.
I would love to see your tree to see if I can fill any missing links on mine. Mine is a work in progress, but you are welcome to see my tree as well. I will add you as a guest. I believe I have found where Pinkney Moore is buried and hope to visit the cemetery to get photos when possible. I have been to Cowden area and have gotten several photos of gravesites.

GREENSBORO - Mrs. Maggie McNair Pinnix, 87 of 606 Glover Street, died on August 28, 2009 at Moses H. Cone Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 4, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at Allen and Associates Mortuary, Inc., 508 Summit Ave. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park.

A native of Moore County, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters; Mrs. Darlene Ramirez,of the home, and Ms. Patricia Goins of Eden. One sister, Mrs. Dolly Balem, of High Point. 15 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 41 great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 until 1:30 p.m.

Noah Johnson was my wife's ggggrandfather. We think that his wife Milly may have been a Stewart(not sure). My wife descends from Noah and Milly's son Henry Johnson, who had a son named Elkanah Johnson, who's daughter Docie Johnson was my wife's grandmother. This Noah Johnson may have migrated from the Person County area, where there are Indian Johnsons and Stewarts. We are going to Moore County soon and do some research.

Final Accounts Books at Courthouse?

I was doing research on my Oats family from Moore County at the NC State Archives and found an Index to Final Accounts in Moore County. There are a few entries that could be what I am looking for to break through this wall I have hit.

Does anyone know if these Final Accounts books are at the Courthouse in Moore County? Is there anyone willing to help me out and look for those entries? Here is what i found in the index:

John Leonard Wood Obit

STATE ROAD - Dr. John Leonard Wood, age 57 of Quail Tree Lane, State Road, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at his residence.

Dr. Wood was born in Carthage, NC on August 17, 1951 to Elijah Leonard Wood and Sally Smith Wood.

He was a graduate of NC State University with a Bachelor of Science, graduate from UNC Chapel Hill Dental School, and received an honor by the Academy of Dentistry International and was awarded the title of "Fellow". He was a member of Psi Omega Fraternity, Chi Upsilon Chapter, and North Carolina Realtor Association. Also a member of American Dental Association, North Carolina Dental Society, Blue Ridge Dental Society, Academy of General Dentistry, UNC Dental Alumni Assoc., UNC General Alumni Assoc., Yadkin Valley Chamber; and also a Mason, Shriner, and Scottish Rite. He was a Pilot and loved flying, motorcycles, golf and hunting and was an avid musician.

Dr. Wood was preceded in death by his father, Elijah Leonard Wood.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Strickland Wood of the home; a son he adored, Christopher Ashley Strickland of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Allie Ross and Gage Strickland; they were his heart and soul, and he was known to them as "Poppy"; sister-in-law, Lori Parkman and husband, Jeff; brother-in-law, Kirk Hutchins and wife, Amanda; mother-in-law, June Hutchins, all of Raleigh; close and dear friends, Bill and Judy Walker of Elkin; and the loyal staff at Dr. Wood Dental Office.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, 2 p.m. July 25, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Elkin by Dr. Bill Johnson. Family will receive friends following the Memorial Service in the church Fellowship Hall. The family wants to say a special thanks to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for the love and support to the Wood family. I was trying to find out if a son of Gabriel migrated to Grayson / Montgomery Va or Rowan / Wilkes of NW NC.

I am interested in William Hardin, b bet 1753-1754 and died 1803 in Grayson County, VA. He was married to a Jemima (Unknown) They named their first born son Gabriel b ca 1781 who was both deaf and dumb.

William had 200 acres by Land Warrant of State of Virginia in Grayson county, Va. on the Little Fox Creek, off the New River, Va., His estate was inventoried on 3-5-1803.

William was a Revolutionary War Soldier. Served in Cox's Command Volunteer Militia 1782. Virginia Freeholder of 200 acres land on dividing Ridge between Elk Creek and Little Fox Creek. "Hardin's Ridge" Independence, Virginia Grayson Co., Aided Whigs against Tory invasion.

It was my thought that this William may have been a son of Gabriel Jr and migrated to SW VA just across the road from Rowan County, NC. I know some of the Eastern NC Hardins were in Pendleton, SC as were other who migrated to NW NC>\\
