Hello,

Just wanted you to know that I looked in the New Paltz Independent and Times for this obituary, but I could not seem to find it. I did find a brief reference to the family on 2/16/1922. It reads:

"Catherine M. Smith has sold her fruit farm of 32 acres on Basket Street at Clintondale to W. Lockwood of Kingston"

Mary Anne

1931 death in Binnewater/Rosendale

I am helping a friend locate resources in Ulster County for researching a death that may have occurred there 2 May 1931. An Ella Chiacra/Chiacchiera died on that date and was butied in a NYC cemetery a few days later. Cemetery records (with name misspelled Chiara) indicate she died OT (out of town) but don't specify the location. There were relatives in Binnewater/Rosendale area, and my friend believes Ella was with them at the time of her death.

Are there on-line resources such as old newspapers from that area, or other records that might prove helpful? Is there a local library that would have old papers on microfilm?

Any suggestions on an approach to locating a death record would be appreciated. I live in NJ and cannot currently travel to NY for research.

Thanks

Dear aggieway,

THANK YOU so much for these obits!! They are very much appreciated. They attached just fine.

And the obit for Robert, Sr. has provided me with two more alternate spellings to check out when looking for information/records on the DeBow & Fornaro branches, DeVow & Finaro.

Interesting, too, that Harry Wilson "Billy" Skerritt's obit mentions only his mother & not also his father, Robert A. Skerritt, Sr.

Thank you again for these obits.

I can check the date of death at the NYS Archives and also look for the Kingston Freeman as well as Poughkeepsie newspapers next library trip-probably before the end of the month.
I know you would be entitled to a copy of the death certificate from the NYS records, but it is likely that the local record is available to you more quickly and cheaply should you decide you want it.

Hi Mary Ann,
I just found a little snipet from the Kingston Freeman, that has Alfred W. Carter being given administrative rights to the estate of his wife Catherine "late of Plattekill." It was written in March 1922. So that narrows it down a bit more.

K.

Well, I suppose it's possible. The date of death came from on of her grandchildren's attempts at putting the tree together about 20 years ago. I don't actually have a citation for it, just a notation on a family tree. I know that she and her husband (Alfred W. Carter)were living in Plattekill for the 1920 census. As you saw by the article you posted, her daughter moved out of the area in 1922. So, I'm guessing that the date is at least close.

I really appreciate your help! I wonder, since she's my grandmother, if they'd give me a death certificate from Plattekill? Hmmm.

Thank you!
Kathryn

Look-up Request 50th Wedding Anniversary abt. 1969/1970 in Kingston Daily Freeman

Can anyone do a look-up for a possible 50th Wedding anniversary announcement for Harry W. SKERRITT and wife Lillian M. nee DeBOW of Hurley?

The probable time period for the anniversary would be May 1969 - Dec 1970.

I don't know if there had been a smaller Hurley community newsletter during that time or just the Kingston Daily Freeman where this may have been reported.

I think that the Hurley Reformed Church had little flyers with the Sunday services but I don't know if anything of that nature for members of the congregations would be mentioned nor where one could possibly find archived copies of these assuming anyone even bothered to save them.

I'm not in NY and being a recession stastic in any position to send & pay for a copy of such an announcement if it does exist so I'd really appreciate the look-up. Thanks

EARLY CRAGSMOOR: There were three families, namely Gonzalus, Ferguson and Lilly, living in Cragsmoor when the Mances and Coddingtons came shortly before the Revolutionary War.

At that time pioneers were moving and claimning land wherever they found it unsettled, even though much of it might have been granted to a British subject by the King of England. Not until after the War that freed the colonists, did the John Mance family obtain a legal deed to a large tract of land. Mance earned title to the land he had settled a quarter century earlier by surveying for the party who had obtained a legal title after the war. Others also purchased land to obtain a deed, but it appears that "Old Josie" Joseph Coddington held his land by squatters rights and deeded it off to his four sons.

When the Mances, Coddingtons and others came to the mountain around 1770, they came not for hunting and trapping but to harvest the lush, virgin forests. They were soon followed by Saegers, Evans, Williams, Deckers, Fosters, Wooden and others. The Mances being the most numerous, it soon became known as the Mance Settlement. (John Mance-then Mentz and wife Annatye Mack of Wawarsing had 10 sons and daughters between 1778 and 1798 and this was only one of the Mance families living there.)

By the 1800s Ellenville had become a growing community and opened a new market for good produced on the mountain. The Mance Settlement prospered and there was no problem in supporting the large and ever growing families who lived there.

About 1820 John Mance (1795-1862) built a sawmill on the South Gully stream. This provided a much needed and more convenient place to work up lumber harvested on the mountain.

Jacob Mance had a little furrier shop which was called the "Hat Shop". Mance dressed the furs himself and made them up into caps. Most of his stock was soldin Newburgh. This was in the 1820s and '30s.

Also in the early 1800s Mance's barn was built on the edge of the present county road behind the house nmow standong on the corner of Sam's Point Road. Part of the old foundation still remains.

Mance's Barn was a busy place. The upper floor was used for a weaving room where linens and carpets were made. The lower floor was a carpenter and blacksmith shop. Wagons, sleighs and all manner of articles were made here, including coffins for the village of Ellenville before there was an undertaking establishment there.

After the Civil War, the old barn became known as the "Barracks". A few young menof the mountain, veterans of the war, organized a fife and drum corp and Mance's Barn became their meeting place.

Although there were no churches in Mance Settlement, religion was important to the families there. It was not at all unusual for wagons or sleigh loads of worshipers to travel as far as Wawarsing of the Shawangunk Church to attend services. Methodist camp meegings were held in Mance's Grove.

One occasion in particular has been told of a camp meeting in 1845, promoted by William Rhodes Mance and others, which lasted for a week. There were more than a dozen tents and the average daily attendance was about 200 people.

Really unique, however, was the Gully Sunday School. It was the result of joint efforts of families from the Goldsmith Settlement on the north side of the Gully and the people from the Mance side. With the completion of a road between the two places and a jointinterest in the Mance sawmill already built by the stream, about halfway between the two, it waa decided to build by the Gully Brook to serve both communities.

The building was erected in 1835 and for the next 20 years William Rhodes Mance held Sunday School classes for the children of the mountaineers.

All in all it was a good life, albeit hard, and a relatively contented community thrived for many years. The economy changed, however, with the growth and expansion of other communities around them.

The markets for their goods and services diminished and the mountain top could no longer support the large families and the number of people who lived there. When it became necessary to take in boarders and look for other means of livelihood the younger generation started leaving the mountain to settle elsewhere. It was the end of a pioneer settlement and the beginning of a whole new life of summer boarders, summer homes and eventually Cragsmoor, the artist colony.

I would suggest that you contact the New Paltz library. They have a wonderful file of obituaries from New Paltz and surrounding towns. I am sure they could send you a copy of this obit. Here is their web address:
http://www.eltinglibrary.org/hhhc/

Hello. My name is Jack Weed. I live in Walker Valley and my great great great grandmother was Mary Mance wife of Levi Weed. She was the daughter of Jacob Mance and Aintje Scott. Jacob and Aintje are buried in the community ground in Cragsmoor. They are the only 2 with readable headstones. I read in your posts about a Manceville cemetery. Can you tell me where that is? Thanks, Jack

When visiting in Ulster County and doing research I was told that members of the SAME family used both spellings of MENTZ and MANCE. They lived on a mountain and one member camer down on one side of the mountain, another member came down on the other side of the mountain and each used a different spelling. Of course, way back then many people could not read or write so census takers did the best they could with the pronounciation provided to them. This could have had a lot to do with the different spellings.

When I first started my research I used the spelling of my Mother's family: MANCE. No success until I found another researcher who provided the spelling of MENTZ and then I was successfull in tracing the family.

Rhoda Moree
ARMOREE@aol.com

Well, looks like we're cousins!
My line is Christopher/John/Jacob/Joseph/Joseph Smith (known just as Smith)/George/Robert/Willard/Jane (my mom).

I still live in Ulster County and have been to the old Manceville cemetery, or at least what was left of it in the early 1990's. Mostly hand carved slate stones. Christoffel had a wooden cross which I think has since disappeared.

Timmerman or Simmerman in Wawarsing/Rochester area, late 1700s to early 1800s?

I have found a few bits of information on a Henry and Nicholas Timmerman ( often spelled Simmerman) in Rochester Township, Ulster County. They were both signers of the Articles of Association and there are two records of births to Nicholas Timmerman and Margaret Sax in the Wawarsing Reformed Dutch church records, Jacob, b 20 Oct 1771, bap 8 Nov 1771, and Petrus, bap 14 Aug 1774. The Wawarsing church also has a birth of John Timmerman, bap 9 Mar 1777, father, Henry Timmerman, mother Elizabeth Schultz. And another Wawarsing church record has the birth of Catrina Timmerman, b 27 Dec 1801, father, Hendrick Timmerman, mother Elizabeth Kettle. A Henrick Timmerman (Ancestry.com has Simmerman) can be found in the 1800 Rochester Township census, apparently Nicholas and family had moved to Greene Co. by then. Both spellings, Simmerman and Timmerman, were used in the various records. Does anyone believe they are related to this family or have more information on them.

Thanks, Richard

Hi, yes, males tended to hand down their surname as well as their Y-DNA. So unless you had reason to believe the name had changed (adoption and the like) you would want to find a male descendant of the name you are trying to trace.

Thanks for the note about th Sullivan post What is now Sullivan County was in Ulster County until 1809. I'll try to make it sound more relevant.

Richard

I suppose this means that the name I'm trying to trace in Ulster County, FRANTZ, would have to be the name of the male donor? I only have a vague notion of how the various DNA tests work.

By the way, your duplicate message to the Sullivan board was deleted. I'm guessing because it was off topic - too bad as my FRANTZ relatives spanned the border of Ulster & Sullivan Counties in the little settlement of Frantzdale, now known as Spring Glen. Sullivan was subdivided from Ulster Co in 1809; before that, it was all Ulster Co.

To find us there click on Projects, then search in U under the Y-DNA Geographical Projects list. If you are interested but have some questions you can find our more about Genetic Genealogy and our project in Issue #4 of our Davis Genealogy Newsletter, all issues are archived on our RootsWeb Website at -

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~traces/

We encourage any males with early paternal line roots in Ulster County and surrounding area to join us. Listed are Stephen born probably abt 1775 ... Oliver over the age of 45 years, Levi between 26 and 44 years old, Isaac also between the ages of 26 and 44 years old.

Also listed on this same page is a Abraham GILLETT who may be the same Abraham GILLETT [1745-1808] that married a Betty FAIRCHILD [1763-1845] on 27 JUN 1784.

I am looking for information [such as any records of marriages, land, taxes, burials, bible, etc.] to prove this is the "correct" Abraham GILLETT and that his wife, Betty, was related to one or more of these FAIRCHILD families.

Any help is deeply appreciated.

Dear Dave,

The records of the Reformed Church of Shawangunk, as published, only begin in 1750. The church itself was built between 1751 and 1755 and the first formal congregation was assembled in 1753. See:

http://www.shawangunkreformed.org/aboutus.htm

I believe the Lena Decker you are asking about was baptized at Rochester (recorded at Kingston) and the record reads as follows:

[Hoes B#2729] 10 Jan 1720; Willem Dekker, Rachel Van Aaken, Lena, "Bp'd in Raysester," [Rochester], Ysaak Van Aaken, Leentjen Zuyland

Her brother Abraham was also baptized at Kingston:

[Hoes B#2957] 14 Jan 1722; Willem Dekker, Rachel Van Aaken; Abrhaham; Wit: Willem West, and his wife.

Dorothy Koenig was kind enough to post the following on John Andrew and his wife Lena [Decker] back in 2008:

Dorothy wrote:

On 12 July 1761 John and Lena Andrew were witnesses (godparents) at the baptism of little "John", the son of Thomas Andrew and Rachel Oostrander.

Two years earlier on 21 Nov 1759 in the same church John Andrew and Lena Decker were witnesses at the baptism of little "Moses", the son of Abraham Smeedes and Geertie Swart.

On pages 587 and 588 of the compiled "Ostrander, a genealogical record..." published in 1999, it says that the Thomas Andrew who married Rachel Ostrander was the son of John Andrew and Lena ____. Thomas Andrew and Rachel Ostrander were married in Shawangunk Church on 10 February 1760. Rachel's older brother, Jacobus Ostrander,
married Elizabeth Andrew, sister of Thomas.

The Ostrander book also says, "...Elizabeth Andrew came from a family noted for its Loyalist activities. Elizabeth's father, John Andrew, had been driven from his home in Half Moon by harassment from a pack of Super-Patriots who considered him a dangerous man. He lost his home and possessions and was age 72, but he managed to struggle through the wilderness for and entire year before reaching safe haven in Canada...Others of the Andrew surname who preferred British Canada to Revolutionary New York included Abraham, George, Joseph, Michael, and Robert Andrew."

Dorothy Koenig in an email to NYUlster dated 19 Sep 2008

Best regards,
Pam Sears
