A Geographical Y-DNA Project For Ulster County and surrounding area has been established at Family Tree DNA. This Project is focused on the Davis surname but it is open to all. We encourage anyone with paternal side roots in this area to consider joining us. This is especially handy for those surnames that don't yet have a Surname Project. The Project is titled "Ulster County, New York, Y-DNA Project" (abbreviated to "Ulster Co NY Y-DNA") and can be found on Family Tree.com. To find us there click on Projects, then search in U under the Y-DNA Geographical Projects list. If you are interested but have some questions you can find our more about Genetic Genealogy and our project in Issue #4 of our Davis Genealogy Newsletter, all issues are archived on our RootsWeb Website at -

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~traces/

We encourage any males with early paternal line roots in Ulster County and surrounding area to join us. Females whose direct paternal line originates from this area can have a paternal side male relative test for this project.

I suppose this means that the name I'm trying to trace in Ulster County, FRANTZ, would have to be the name of the male donor? I only have a vague notion of how the various DNA tests work.

By the way, your duplicate message to the Sullivan board was deleted. I'm guessing because it was off topic - too bad as my FRANTZ relatives spanned the border of Ulster & Sullivan Counties in the little settlement of Frantzdale, now known as Spring Glen. Sullivan was subdivided from Ulster Co in 1809; before that, it was all Ulster Co

Hi, yes, males tended to hand down their surname as well as their Y-DNA. So unless you had reason to believe the name had changed (adoption and the like) you would want to find a male descendant of the name you are trying to trace.

Thanks for the note about th Sullivan post What is now Sullivan County was in Ulster County until 1809. I'll try to make it sound more relevant.
