Hello,

Yes, my great-grandfather, Jacob, was a brother to your great-grandmother, Mary. I have lots of information on the Albert line, owing most of it to a distant cousin who lives in Maryland. I don't have any on George's wife Mary other than she was also known as Maria and her maiden name was either Schade or Schad.

My email address should be visible to you when you see this message. Email mee, and I will send you what I have. It would be interesting to hear about your line.

Thanks,

Laura

With the exception of Raymond (I don't specifically remember him in this little incident) the rest of them, and I think their wives, and John Amos showed up on my doorstep in 1960 when I was five years old which means they were alive at that time, I guess (a bit bitter LOL). They had come to Tampa to convince my father to leave me and my mother and go back to Albany with them. I remember them standing outside the front door and my granddaddy on my mother's side came out of the house and a physical fight started. Granddaddy won. They left and went back to their hotel a couple of blocks away. John Amos did have at least two wives. The only specific name I remember is Katherine (but it seems to be spelled Kathern on the census) She died when my father was two which would be around 1914. John Amos came back to Florida after my granddaddy died in 1963. I think this was around 1965 and lived in Brandon, FL and Thonotassassa (sp?) for a while. He had a woman/housekeeper with him at the time whose name was Ms. Gaylord. Other than her name, there isn't anything else about the rest of the family I learned then. We visited him on and off but was too young to remember anything about the conversations. But...I do remember (just now) that he brought horses with him. Daddy taught me to ride back then, and...John Amos had a business back in Albany giving pony rides, etc. !!! LOL Other than this, I know there are no other recollections. He was not looked upon as a good or kind man or fatherly within my family. I never received even a verbal "happy birthday" from him or anything. No affection. So I guess that must have been why I wasn't listening when the adults talked? LOL.

John Amos did remarry at least once. Daddy did talk often about the brothers and was close to Earl. The only sister was Catherine.

Yes, I'm on ancestry.com.

Thank you again for the help.

Kate

I'm not sure if this is the right Raymond.

I found the obits for Bertha Wagner and Raymond Wagner. On Raymond's obit it names his siblings as:

Beatrice Wagner
Mrs Ruth Dobert
Dorothy Riley
Esther Wagner
Henry Wagner

No mention of John,Elmer or Earl( They may already have died)

John Amos Wagner could have remarried and had the 4 girls listed.

Do you have ancestry? If so, I can tell you where to find these obits.

Raymond seemed to have 1 daughter(Patricia) and 4 grandchildren.

Bertha Wagner-Apr 1957
Raymond-13 Jan 1970

Kathy

Aggie,

Thank you. Thank you. The Elmer G/Catherine looks like the right one. I'm digging up information on Shirley to see if she is still alive. As soon as I enter all the info I've just received into my tree and see what pops up I am going to look into the church records and contact them. My father did say he was Lutheran. He's been gone since 1985 and all I have is what remains in my memory. I lost almost everything I owned several years ago. To be able to piece this together is very hard...we're talking about 50 year old memories here...with no one in the family to talk to ...LOL...On the other hand, considering that I've pieced together my mother's side of the family already, I've accomplished something. I am really appreciative of your efforts for me and Kathy's (above) as well. My father used to ask me if I would help him find his family and I tried on and off for years and it looks like I've finally done it.

Kate

Kathy,

Thank you so very much. The orphanage records are the correct ones. Daddy must have been placed in a different orphanage. He specifically mentioned having to drop out of school in the seventh grade because he and his siblings were placed in an orphanage. I had a nice research clerk at the state library looking into this but he hit a brick wall. It was very emotional to see your e-mail with the names of the orphanages and the kids. Catherine was killed a short time after from a fall from a horse. I was named for her. I just may have found Earl's son and placed a call to him earlier today. I have my fingers crossed. Daddy's middle name was Frederick. DOB: 31 Jan 1912 (altho one record shows 1911), DOD: 8 Jan 1985. He lived in Tampa and for a short period with me in Miami before he passed away. SSDI shows his residence as in Tampa.

Kate

I haven't much to offer at the moment, but I may be able to do some research for you at the library in the next couple of weeks. I'll post anything I find.
There is an Elmer G. on the 1930 census married to Catherine G. with a 1 year old daughter Shirley E. M. Wagner that might be the right person.
I looked through a few old Albany city directories for you. In more recent years (as late as 1983), there was an Elmer G. married to Cora. There was also a John J. who was a bartender married to Frances and living at 522 3rd St for many years. Frances sold this residence in 2008, so she may still be alive. There was a Raymond G. married to Bertha and it looks like they moved to Troy in 1953.
The following may be of interest to you. It comes from http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html and it concerns the death of Alfred E (Edward?) son of Eliza and Caspar. (Poor spelling in 2nd article is due to fuzzy image.) You may wish to search this terrific newspaper site for other info on your family if you haven't already.

______________________________
WAGNER—June 6. 1933.

I am the great granddaughter of Casper/Caspar and Eliza Wagner of Albany. My father was Henry Frederick Wagner, son of John Amos Wagner (1866-1975). I have names of siblings from Casper and Eliza, and of my father, however, I have run into dead ends. You would think that of all the siblings, there have to be surviving relations. Also, the family appears to have been well-rooted in Albany as when my father chose to reside in Florida with my mother (Florida born) after WWII, rather than returning to Albany, his father, John Amos, disowned him completely. In 1960, his brothers and John still resided in Albany as that was when they all came to Florida and tried to convince my father to leave us and go back to Albany with them. The names I have are as follows: Casper/Caspar Wagner (b. 1846, Hesse Darmstadt)and Eliza (b. 1851), children: Elisabeth (b. 1878), Henry (b. 1882), Henry (b. 1880), George (b. 1880), Edward (b. 1884), John A. (b. 1886), and Mary (b. 1892). John A. had the following children: Henry F. my father (b. 1912), Earl (b. 1918), Catherine (b. 1914), Elmer (b. 1907), Raymond (b. 1913), and John (b. 1911). John A. was married to Kathern (sp?) and I believe she would be the mother to all the children except for Earl. My father said she died when he was two. At some point after her death, the children were temporarily placed in an orphanage as John A. could not take care of them. As there are no census records showing the family in 1920, this may be the period when they were in the orphanage.

If anyone in the Albany area would be willing to help me with locating records or surviving relations in the area, I would be sincerely grateful as I have absolutely no knowledge or contact with any of my father's side of the family.

I replied to the list but you did not see it. I could not find your Peter on the 1850 census but I doubt he was born in Amsterdam, Holland possbily Amsterdam, New York. I met several years ago with a man working on this at my brother's home in Arizona. He was from Scottsdale. It has been several years since we talked. I have a Peter W. Groom in my files but he was not born in Holland. I have worked on this line for many, many years and have no Groom born in Holland. His wife's family may have come from Holland. Another distant cousin of mine responded to my reply on the Fulton list. I do not usually reply on message boards. email me oldcountrybarnatverizon.net

Drake Family

The following story comes to me from my family roots and I am seeking any information which would support this story.

“The Drake family were settled on the Hudson River Valley somewhere in the vicinity of Albany, and the original settler who was given his grant of land came from Devonshire, England. He apparently was what they call today a “gentleman farmer” and ran his extensive properties with bonded servants. When the revolution came along, he decided, after talking it over with his sons and wife that they would stay quietly on their land take no part on either side while they knew the English government was partially the cause of the aggravations which brought this rebellion they were not prepared to side against the king.

The two sons, who were quite young, went off at one time on a hunting trip to provide meat in winter and on their return some two weeks later found their home burnt to the ground, the barns and out houses burned, all animals gone and their father and mother hung to a limb of a large tree in front of where the house had been. The bonded servants had also disappeared with the exception of one whom they located and who told them that the crowd of men had come to the house demanding that their father take the oath of loyalty to the New York State and drink confusion to the King which he refused to do and the result was as mentioned above. This caused the boys to decide to join the Loyalist forces. One of them went down to New York and joined the Loyalists regiment there and the other, William Drake, came up towards Niagara and joined Sir John Johnson’s Ranger Regiment. At the conclusion of hostilities Sir John Johnson’s Ranger regiment retired to the Canadian side of the Niagara River where they were disbanded and given grants of land and utensils, food, etc., to keep them for a year. The other brother, who was with the loyalist regiment, believing that the terms of the Peace Treaty would be observed by the Americans, had not left New York with the British troops for the Maritimes, as most of the Loyalists had, but took his discharge there with the intentions of going back to their property and then farming or selling it. Unfortunately, in spite of the Treaty which gave protection to the Loyalists and had guaranteed their property to them, this was not observed and in spite of the fact that George Washington had proceeded into New York, he permitted the mob to kill and hang Loyalists who stayed behind, not raising a finger to protect them."

I have evidence concerning the arrival of William Drake in Upper Canada, and with whom he came, where he was settled and his descendents. I am a great-great-grandchild. I have his in-laws, the Dowdles or Doudles, formerly of the Minisink Plantation, Organge County, NY; but I have no eveidence to support his parents migration to Albany nor the events surrounding their deaths and William subsequent actions. From his gravestone i know William was born 13 June 1761 (+/- 15 days) but I cannot say if this was in New York State or Britain. I have no additional information on the brother or any other siblings.

Any help on this would be appreciated. I can be contacted directly at info@norcross.ca
The Ernhout family that I am working on originated from a John(could have been Johannes) Ernhout who was a native of Germany emigrated to America with Corn. Van Rensselaer and was one of the first settlers in Albany area he served as a private in revolutionary war his wife was a native of Holland he had 13 children - Christopher(born in Albany) is the son from which our family evolves - most of the information I have comes from his son John I believe that originally the name was spelled with an A Arnhout - Christopher and some of his family moved to Ulster Co NY(early 1800,s) and later to Sullivan Co NY - 1840,s

Did any one else hear this news report the last couple days, regarding a road repair crew stumbling across caskets/wooden ones, while doing a road repair and or reconstruction?? Hear the tail end of the report on the TV, but it never came back to say exactly where this happened. Was it in this area?? I found one story regarding ALbany, and a Roman Catholic cemetery, etc. on the net.

Just wondering if any of my ancestors might have lived in this area, etc.

Thank you
Pat
cw
I have found four people with surname Wells I'd like to connect to one another. One was a)Lydia Wells married to Abraham Ten Eyck. She apparently was born about 1811, Canada East. She died 7-6-1877 and is buried at Bray Cem., Bengal Twp., Clinton Co., MI. Her widower husband married a second time to Lucy Blanchard 10-22-1878 who died 6-13-1913 and is buried at New Haven Cem., Gratiot Co., MI. Abraham died 3-24-1889. I suspect b)Abigail Wells 1842-1873 may have been related to Lydia but have no proof. Abigail married Simeon Ten Eyck and I have both born Canada West. Simeon was a son of Abraham and Lydia Wells Ten Eyck. c)Lee Wells married Jane Van Horn born 1812, daughter of William and Lannah Van Duyne Van Horn. d)Maria Wells born about 1814 wed Richard Hilton Springstead of Saltfleet Twp., Wentworth,Ontario CAN.
He was son of Jacob and Rachel Van Dusen Springstead. Jacob was brother of 1)Phoebe Springstead who 1793 married Anthony C. Ten Eyck and 2)Lavina Springstead who 1797 married Caspar Hollenbeck Ten Eyck. Their brother Jeremiah Springstead wed Eleanor Burkely/Burkley 1792 and their daughter Magdalena married 1814 Stephen Bedell. Another daughter,Sarah, wed George Pettit 1818. Others--Charles J. Wells b.1886 married 1924 Olive Guernsey Oakley 1906-1988. Olive was grand-
daughter of Solomon Dutcher and Jennie P. Burnett Oakley of NY. Paul Stanley Wells married Ruth Marjorie Ten Eyck 1914-1984 daughter of William W.and Marie Maveus Ten Eyck of Wisconsin. Sarah M. Wells 1838-1874 married 1858 William
Bradford Ripley of Tioga,PA. Any help with Wells, much appreciated, please and thanks.

Thanks for your help. This is very confusing: John F. Martin and his 2nd wife had children bp. Helderberg Ref. Ch., and those records give the mother's name as Eliza Ann Wormer, not Hungerford, dispite the confusing marriage record in that church of 29 Oct 1851. I have not been able to pin down such a person in the 1850 Census - the closest I can come is an Eliza Ann Warner, of Knox, b. ca 1816, dau. of Peter M. Warner & Margaret Ball. The 1850 Census also shows a Joseph Wormer, 14, in the household of Stephen & Hannah Hungerford in Knox - evidently the parents of William Henry Hungerford who was bp. 6 Oct 1850, 2nd Ref. Church, Berne, d. 3 Jun 1852, bur. Lake Rural Cem. in Berne.

Eliza Ann Martin was appointed the guardian for minor William Hungerford 27 Dec 1851, Schenectady; the 1860 Census lists with John & Eliza Ann, a William Martin, b. ca 1850, but I find no further record of him and suspect he was that William Hungerford.

A William Hungerford was executor for John F. Martin's will probated 17 Sep 1894, Schenectady.

If you can make any sense out of this, I'd certainly appreciate hearing from you. You can contact me directly at bruacker@yahoo.com

Thanks again!

I tried to find this for you at the NYS Library which has the Times Record (from Troy) but not the Troy Record for that year. This obituary/death notice could not be found in the Times Record-sorry. I also checked the Albany Times Union just in case-not there either. You might need someone in Troy (Rensselaer County) to look for the Troy Record for you.

Mary Anne

Richard, I don't believe that is correct. My records show that Eliza Magdaline Hungerford md. Spencer Strevell on May 4, 1850. Unfortunately I do not have the source. But, in the 1850 census, even though both are living at home with their respective parents, both say they were married withing the year. In the 1860 census the wife of Spencer is Magdalen. In the 1870 census, the his wife is Eliza. Which seems to confirm she was Eliza Magdaline.

I believe Eliza is Eliza Magdelena Hungerford, daughter of Charles & Mary (Winne) Hungerford. The church record: Reference FHL #0017678, Church records for Gelderland (pp. 1-22), Helderberg (pp. 23-186), and Princetown (187-.) Page 241 has the following marriage: 1851, (the marriage prior to this one is 29 Oct 1851--they seem sequential) John Marten of Guilderland to Eliza Hungerford. This is the only Eliza in Albany county in the 1850 census and she isn't listed with her family in the 1855 state census--so I'm guessing it is this Eliza...

I hope this helps.

I have a copy of family history, written by a Hagaman, which was written 1921. He states Rachel was a sister to Springstead brothers ,Jacob, Jermiah, & John living in the town of Coeymans, N>Y.Rachel is listed as born April 5 1759 married Abraham Hagaman @1775 and lived in Coeymans until her death Jan 29 1839 There is mention of a gra eTe nddaughter who continued to live on the family farm. These Springsteads were probably cousins to Uriah Springstead .

I'm trying to find out the name of the cemetery, which is written in script on the death certificate.
Sons of Abraham Cemetery is probably its name.

http://www.iajgs.org/cemetery/new-york-ny/ny-state-albany-al...

After its name, you can click on a link that will take you to a site where you may be able to see your cousin's tombstone for a fee of $18 for 90 days.

The cemetery is listed as:
Temple Israel, Sons of Abraham, Ohav Sholom Cemetery, 1894-2002.

You can do a search that will give you some information before subscribing. It may be enough to confirm that this is the correct cemetery.

Cliff Lamere, Albany NY

Ebenezer Wicks came from Long Island to Rensselaerville in 1790 and to New Baltimore in 1802. He was a Baptist preacher of great force of character who often preached three sermons on a Sunday, following the trade of carpenter and farmer also. In 1805 he built a school house which served as both church and school, and it is said he was the means of building a church of Grapeville, doing most of the work without charge, and contributing liberally toward the material.
History of Greene County

Section 5

Vol. 1,
1651 – 1800
J.
