John S. Clark, dob 1822, at Bridgewater, NH

I am seeking any information pertaining to John S. Clark, born at Bridgewater, NH in 1822. I do not know his actual date of birth nor his parentage. The place of birth is obtained from his son's death record and the date of birth from the 1880 United States Census, National Archives Film T9-0556, Page 397B. They were residing with his father-in-law, John Robins, at Worthley Pond, Peru, Oxford, ME in 1850 per the 1850 census. His name is also given as Clarke according to the Peru, Maine vital records showing the birth of his son, John. According to the 1880 census, they were residing at Harvard, MA and he spelled his name without the e at this time. Listed with him in the census is Lucy, his wife, Polly, his mother-in-law and three children, George, Frank and Lizzie. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

You can get some newer deeds online for Grafton county at NH registry of deeds. (google it)
Other than that you will have to access the records in the records room in Woodsville, NH. They have them back as far and farther than you are researching.
I'm looking for the parents of my gggg-grandfather 'Jehiel Smith.' Jehiel was born in Bath, New Hampshire on 25 Aug 1803 and died in Sep 1884 in Wisconsin, where he had resided since 1847. He was a doctor of the 'eclectic' school of medicine and had practiced for a time in Montpelier and East Randolph, Vermont. Jehiel married Martha Hills Sargent ("Patty") in MA in 1823 and Mary Wallbridge in VT in 1833.
My grandmother, who had researched her family's history for over 50 years, had no documentation on Jehiel's antecedents but I recently ran across a note in her files that said his parents were Stephen Smith and Sally Hadley. I've found some family trees with detail about Stephen and Sally but none include mention of Jehiel. However, the places and dates would fit in with what I know about him. Does anyone have any info they can share? Thanks much, Topaz

A couple of corrections to my posting yesterday: It was in the 1860 census, not 1850, that I found Almira King living in the household of Almon and Mary King. She was not, according to the census, born in Canada, but she is the right age to be the Almira King born to William and Sibyl (Clark) King in Canada. Another lesser possibility is that she is Almira Bean, born in 1801 in Gilmantown, NH, who married Nathaniel King in 1820. (Nathaniel was the grandson of James and Deliverence(Harriman)King through their son Joshua who lived and raised a large family in Tunbridge, Orange, Vermont.)

I have done a little searching since your reply and have found an Ancestry Family Tree online for William and Alvira/Elvira(Bean)King of Prince Edward County, Canada. Since there is an Alvira King, born in Canada and of the approximate right age, in the household of Almon and Mary (Cummings)King in WI in the 1850 Census, I think there must be a strong connection. I suspect that you, also, have seen this information.

One correction to my previous reply: the adopted son of Almon and Mary who is buried in the Center Haverill, NH, cemetery is George West King, not George Wells King.

What is your source for Wilson King's birth information? (Mine for the other three children of James and Hannah (Hackett) King is only through family.) It may be of interest that two children, Alvah and Caroline, in the household of Almon and Mary(Cummings)King in the 1860 WI Census are identified as born in Canada. In Mary's obituary, Caroline is said to be her adopted daughter. Because I have seen the gravestone in NH, I also know that Almon and Mary had an adopted son, George Wells King, who died as a child in the 1840's, just before they went to WI. Do you know if any of these names appear earlier as sons of Wilson? Where in Canada did he live and when did he die?

I am a researcher in Rapid City SD, I am wrting the biographies of the men who founded Rapid City in Feb of 1876, one of them was a William Marston, whom might have been William Marstin from Grafton County NH, he was born about 1808 and died in 1889 in Deadwood South Dakota, he had been in the Black Hills of Dakota Territory at least since 1875, he was known as the Iceman in Deadwood before his death. He had a daughter possibly named Melissa Kelly who lived in New Hampshire. Also a man named Anston Marston was a relative, he and Melissa filed letters of administration for his estate. I find way back in 1840 a William Marstin in Havehill Grafton NH, he has a son who is under 10 and a daughter under 5, he is 20 to 30 yrs old. I can not find him later on anywhere, spelled anyway. I do find an Anson Marstin but he is the son of Richard and Mercy Marstin in 1850 census, I don't find any Melissa Marstin or Melissa Kelly to tie to him. I don't know if anyone can help me but unless I can tie him to his past I can't write much about him.

I would love to have a copy of what you have on the Steere graves. Do you have any pictured? Did they move the original tombstones?

Are you related to the Steeres?
WRONG! That is a small family cemetery. The North Monroe Cemetery is north of Monroe on Rte 135, go north past the north Monroe bridge turn, go up the winding hill, it is on the right. Latitude: 44.306768; Longitude: -71.999878
They are at the south end. I have transcripts of all the Steere and Ainsworth gravestones. BTW the cemeteries was moved in 1953.
