I have a copy of a list of "Taney County Soldiers of Civil War" from the "White River Valley Historical Society Quarterly" Winter 1962-1963. If anyone wants to know if a name is on this list, contact me and I will let you know. It appears to be a local militia group listing. The first few lines say it is for Order No. 3, lead by Captain William L. FENIX, operating from March 10, 1965 to September 9, 1865, out of Forsyth

I might as well take the time to transcribe the list and post it here. Maybe someone can explain it to me. I don’t find a number of these names on the Soldiers and Sailors database by the National Park Service. Are they Union or Confederate? Is this some kind of militia? It isn’t regular army. The magazine I got this from just presents it as a list with no explanation.

Some more information on the list I mentioned:
The Missouri Secretary of State Website: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers/

Lists Fenix's Taney County VMM as having participated on the side of the Union, organized under G. O. # 3 March 10 - September 9, 1865, under the command of Captain William L. Fenix.

Maybe VMM stands for Volunteer Missouri Militia?

Thanks for posting this. I think this was most likely a Union list. I know Eli Sanford, who is on the list, was a Union soldier. My ancestors, Edward W. Wood and his brother, John B. Wood fought for the Confederacy and most likely enlisted across the border in Marion Co AR. Edward and his wife, Mary, divorced over political differences and Mary married Eli Sanford in 1866. They also had a brother, William Wood, who was also believed to have fought for the Confederacy, but I haven't found any information on him.yet The Wood brothers' father, John "Uncle Jacky" Wood was killed by bushwackers during the Civil War and the Wood family moved across the line into Arkansas where they remained for about 15 years before returning to Taney

Are there any listings for Walker? My William Walker would have been around 40, but men older than him were known to have served. His oldest son, John was born about 1836, and could have been of about the right age.

They were most likely Confederate.
