Hello Carolyn,

good to hear from you as well!
Ladora was certainly a busy writer, and until her death she wrote many letters to her son, Murray Sr, and to his family. The letters I have begin in 1890 when she was 34 and continue on until a few years before her death. She always begins with "my darling boy," or "my darling ones all," and her personality is easily apparent in her style of writing. Carol and Nell are also mentioned in some letters.

One fact I am sure that you will be interested in is that I read LaDora met William Flemming in church and was initially attracted to him because he had a nice singing voice. When I come across the place where I read that I will make a copy for you.

I am currently setting aside things, as I go through them, that you might be interested in getting a copy of. I have a telegram to Murray Combs, informing about LaDora's death, and a whole book of pictures of Murray and possibly his first wife spending time at Riverside Farm Inn, with some pictures of LaDora and one of her with her brother, Henry Carroll.

Also, there is a note on one of the papers I have that says "W.H. Flemming 1845 - 1924 I.O.O.F Cemetery."
I have not done any research on William Flemming or his line, but as I go through these letters and such, I will keep sending you more information.
Do you have an email where we can continue correspondence?

It is great to connect with you and I look forward to being able to shine some light on your heritage!

matthew

Matthew, hello! Unbelievable that we are still able to connect after so long, and wonderful at that! So many times emails are so obsolete that it never happens. How can I NOT still be interested. I'm not getting any younger, and those elusive Flemings of that line have consumed many hours of queries on boards; emails between other people who did not turn out to be the right line etc. Just so great of you to pick the ball up and carry it.

From all I have heard or read, Ladora was a wonderful woman, and my great grandfather, William Fleming, a lucky man to have her as his second wife (I descend from his first wife, Mary Emma Hamlin through their son Claude). Is it safe to assume you have a picture of William and Ladora and know how they met? I only have one picture of them together to my name (when they were senior citizens, it looks like), and I never saw or possessed a copy of it until a few years ago, when the last of William's granddaughters through his son Claude passed away (she lived halfway across the states from us, never had children of her own, and hoarded them until she was in the last of her life). How very sad that I could not have known more about them throughout my life, particularly while there were still people alive to ask questions of. I knew OF them, but nothing that satisfied my desire for knowledge of my family on that side, and Frances Fleming was the only grandparent I was fortunate enough to have for very long (I was only 13 when I held her hand as she took her dying breath..I loved her dearly).

I am still chasing William's parental lines to no avail (Samuel and Thomas are family names). I know for a fact that William and Ladora both died at Carol's house in Collinsville, OK, and were taken back to Neosho for burial (been there..). Have the obits for them, courtesy of McDonald County G.S. and Retha Mitchell, but believe it or not, neither Oklahoma nor Missouri has been able to provide me with a death certificate for William Henry Fleming. I was able to get one for Ladora from the State of Oklahoma.

My mother Claudia May Fleming (1911-1993), also spent many summers at Riverside, and was very close to her Aunts Carol (Poole nee Flemming/used double "m") and Nell (Wiley nee Fleming). She was particularly close to her Aunt Carol and Uncle Clyde (Poole). I was in high school when Carol died, and even after all of those years of not being able to see each other, my mother was heartbroken over her death. I distinctly remember many tears, as they were very close, and I still have the original letter from Great Aunt Carol to my mother, when she was widowed. My mother, Claudia, was the eldest of three daughters of Claude Moore Fleming and his second wife Frances Kyle. He was married previously, but she was not, and being 33 years of age at marriage, would probably have been considered a spinster at the time. Grandmother Fleming was wonderful, and I loved her, and I still have letters we exchanged when I was a child. My mother Claudia (1911-1993)was a great oral historian, and during my childhood, I heard her speak of your Murray and Joe (ie, Combs), so I take it Murray Sr. was your great grandfather..

I also have a couple of letters on Riverside Inn letterhead. They evoke so much nostalgia in me! In 2002, my husband and I went on a questing trip to Oklahoma and Missouri, and we went to the Riverside site (now and RV park). I swear to you, my mother was looking over my shoulder the whole time! We weren't sure we had the right place.. UNTIl I saw the little cabin that had the hinged wall that could be lifted in hot weather to let the breeze through, and saw the paths to the "cabins in the tree tops", and the river where my grandmother Frances kept watch for water moccasins when the girls swam (one was hiding under a brush pile from a recent flood, my husband didn't tell me he saw it's tail sticking out!). I know it sounds corny, but this beautiful metallic blue and turquoise butterfly landed right beside me in the middle of the road, and stayed by me until we walked on.. just too coincidental for words after nearly a century.

I would love to share information with you, as I have been doing research on my family for nearly ten years, and this bunch has really been a challenge, despite their obvious status in the area. There just doesn't seem to be anyone else out there that is researching them. I have become a "civil war bore" as a result of researching William and other family's civil war military histories. Really interesing. Please feel free to contact me. Would just love to hear from you. Carolyn

Eight territories were enumerated: Arizona, Dakota, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming territories. Unorganized Alaska was enumerated, but the "Indian Territory" was not enumerated for non-Indians. Unlike any previous censuses, after microfilming, the original 1880 census schedules for several states were transferred from the National Archives to various state archives, state libraries, or universities libraries. Only the original 1880 schedules for Pennsylvania remain at the National Archives. Several originals were later transferred to the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C.

Noel, MO, is a very small town. There is also a small resort area along Indian Creek, but not much else goes on. I have never run across any of these names in McDonald County. My mother grew up in that area, and she did not remember any of the names.

I have an old address and phone number of the McDonald County Library from several years ago. The address is Rt. 2, Box 2035, Pineville, MO 64856. The phone number is 417-223-4489. They might be able to help you.

Christie Setser

My family and I have been despearately searching for my great-aunt for over 40 years to no avail. I recently learned that she may have been living in Noel, Missouri area in the 1950's. She was circus performer for many, many years and I'm trying to figure out if this area was where performers maybe stayed during off-season. My great-aunt's name was Bernice Pea Timberlake. She had a few different "stage" names. Billie Lake, Billie Timberlake, or Billie Silverlake. I guess I'm sort of hoping/praying someone in this area maybe able to give me some information on her or possibly the circus people. Thanks in advance.

Perhaps there is a connection here. There is a Jesse E> Ford born 1882/85 who is in the next county/state in Benton, AR on the 1900 Census and is said to be the son of G.H.Ford who was orphaned and living with Sarah Harriet (Ford) Blacock said to be his aunt. So I believe he may have been a younger brother of Josephus & Markely Ford.

Martha (Beshears) Hodson (1857-1896), wife of Zachariah

I am having trouble getting past a brick wall I have hit, at an ancestor of mine named Martha. She was the third wife of Zachariah Hodson (1830-1899), who was born in Henry County, Indiana to parents John and Sarah (Mills) Hodson. They had at least four children: Jonas (1885), Enoch (1886), Rhoda (1888), and Ellis (1891). I am not certain whether Beshears was Martha's maiden name or the name of an earlier husband of hers.

I currently have two primary source documents that can be definitely attributed to her: her marriage certificate to Zachariah, and the tombstone of Zachariah and her.

The marriage license reads:
Marriage between Zachariah Hodson of Pineville, County of McDonald and State of Mo., who is over the age of twenty-one years, and Martha E. Beshears of Pineville, County of McDonald and State of Mo., who is over the age of eighteen years.

The tombstone in Tracy Cemetery in Pineville reads:
ZECHRIAH HODSON
BORN AUG 16 1830 DIED OCT 19 1899
MARTHA L HODSON
BORN AUG 12 1857 DIED MAR 9 1896

It is odd that she is listed alternatively as "Martha E." and "Martha L."

The closest match I have found to another Martha Beshears in the area comes from the 1880 census, where a 20-year-old named Martha is listed as the wife of a 29-year-old Thomas Beshears and the mother of a 1-year-old Lilla M. Beshears. This seems like a likely candidate, but her age is off by at least a couple of years.

Can anyone help me find more out about Martha, including her parentage, maiden name, birth place, etc?

Hi all... I want to clear up something that I made a serious oversight on J.T. Patterson in earlier message. Went back to his son, Thomas Russell Patterson death cert and it listed his father as T.J. I was in a hurry and the T sure looked like a J. Thomas J. shows up on marr rec also I just recently learned. Then I see other middle initials R and a G being used. Could meant to be Russell or Richard
as it seems the two are passed down the family line. And so is John. Thomas Russell son, Richard "Dick" had two middle names John and Earl he went by at different times. My husband is Richard Earl...
Would like to say thanks, jp

Henry C Mizer and Elizabeth Mizer (Wolfe) were man and wife.
They were the parents of Michael Reilly Mizer and Mary Jane
Mizer. They may have had another daughter named Nancy. I do
know that Michael Reilly Mizer and Sarah Mizer (Scaggs) had
about 9 children together. One of their daughter's was name
Nancy. I think Nancy Mizer is the granddaughter of Henry Mizer and Elizabeth Mizer (Wolfe). Henry and Elizabeth were
my g-g-g-grandparents. Michael Reilly Mizer and Sarah Mizer
(Skaggs) were my g-g-grandparents. Sarah Mizer (Scaggs) died and he remarried another woman named Sarah McPherson.
Sarah McPherson was a Cherokee, she was not related to me.
She and Michael had a set of twin boys they named Sherman
and Sheridan ( Sherman did not live very long after his birth). Sheridan Mizer did live a good long life. He had a
son he named Sheridan as well. Just the one son that lived
Sheridan, would show up in any records. That is the only living child Michael and Sarah McPherson ever had. I've spoken to Sheridan Mizer (the one that is living) on the
phone about our families. My g-g-grandmother is Sarah Mizer
(Scaggs). Sheridan's grandmother is Sarah Mizer (McPherson). His grandfather is Michael Reilly Mizer who is
also my g-g-grandfather.We are related to each other in that
way. We share a mutual grandfather and g-g-grandfather, Michael. Michael was Sheridan's grandfather and my g-g-grandfather. One of Michael R. Mizer and Sarah Mizer (Scaggs) children, George W Mizer, was my g-grandfather. George W Mizer married a Cherokee woman named
Jane Mizer (Twist) they were my g-grandparents. All names
in () are maiden names. After having 9 to 10 children with
my g-g-grandmother Sarah Mizer (Scaggs) died. Michael married a much younger woman than himself, Sarah Mizer (McPherson).
That is why Sheridan is a grandson to Michael. It is also
why I am a g-g-granddaughter to Michael. A long passage of
time between the time when Michael remarried again to the
younger Sarah Mizer (McPherson), and she was young and
still able to bear children.
Well, if there is anything else you want to know.

I am the g-g-granddaughter of Michael Reilly Mizer. His
first wife was named Sarah Scaggs. They had many children together. Henry C Mizer and Elizabeth Mizer (Wolfe) were
the parents of Michael Reilly Mizer. On some census records
Elizabeth put her name down as Eliza. Henry C Mizer was born
in Tennessee and so was Elizabeth Mizer (Wolfe). The reason
why Michael Reilly Mizer is on some of the census records
near Henry and Elizabeth is because Michael Reilly Mizer was
their grown son at the time, and most probably lived near
his parents, Henry C Mizer and Elizabeth Mizer (Wolfe).
Henry and Elizabeth had at least 2 children I know of, there
may have been more. I only know that Michael Reilly Mizer
and his sister Mary Jane Mizer was 2 of Henry and Elizabeth's children. I do not know how a Scaggs child could
be their grandchild(ren), because that was Michael Reilly
Mizer's wife's maiden name, Scaggs, Sarah. Their grandchildren would have the last name of Mizer. Elizabeth
Mizer (Wolfe), she was born in 1812 and died in 1909. She
was abt 96 or 97 years old when she passed away. Henry lived
a relative short life. He was born in 1812 and died in 1842.
Henry and Elizabeth were married in 1835, in Bradley, Tennessee, USA. Elizabeth's mother was born in Missouri, but
her father, Mr. Wolfe, was born in Germany and came to the USA. He met Elizabeth's mother and they married. I haven't
yet been able to find out what Mr.Wolfe's first name was.
If anyone knows that information contact me at SandraLBradfield13@hotmail.com
Hi it's been awhile since I last checked my posts for reply to my queries. I did learn that J.R. (John ?) is a county clerk ? as he signed the McDonald Co marriage licences that I found on this family. Can't figure out McRunnels figure into this. I see several Charles SS index but don't know where he died at and the date.
Another to do list is where Stirling was buried so will try and remember to call around.
Do you have J.R.'s parents?
jp
gen4joy@sbcglobal.net

I am very curious if the Elizabeth Mathews you speak of might be the Sarah Elizabeth Mathews in my line. I know she was born in MO and moved to, died, buried in Welling, OK (near Tahlequah). She married Francis Marion Davis. If you think this might be one in the same, I would like to know what else you might have on her family. I do not have any siblings to compare with.

Also, I would be very interested in the Family Reunions you mentioned if you still hold them.

Jennifer Cook
jennifercook@cox.net

I am researching a Melvina Painter who is listed in the 1860 census (no husband listed) for Pineville, McDonald County, Missouri. She was 35 years old and is listed with children Mary Jane, Newton, Martha, Margaret and Georgie. All the children except Georgie are born in Tennessee. I also found Melvina and husband George Painter in the 1850 census for Hawkins County, Tennessee. Does this match your Painter family? Would love any information you might have.
