Martha JOHNSON (b. 1840) Sweden>Minnesota (Kittson)

Searching for names of her husband and children, with object of finding information about my grandmother (Anna Forsgren) an orphan who lived with her grandmother Martha Johnson who brought Anna to America in 1903. They lived with Martha's son Jonas M. Anderson and his wife & children. The family eventually moved to California but I believe Martha may have died in Kittson.

Thank you so much for checking. I know that she died between 1910 and 1914, and I suspect she was buried in a paupers grave with no stone, if not in Kittson County perhaps back home in IL.

I am doing all the indexes for Kittson County Cemeteries and I have searched for a Sarah Pape/Pope. When creating the cemetery index for St. Vincent, I used the original cemetery burial records and there was no burial for a Sarah Pape. She is also not in any of the other cemeteries in the county. She was living in St. Vincent, Kittson County, MN in the 1910 census and is married but no husband is with her. She is living with her sons John Pape (3 yrs), William Blodgett (21 yrs), Andrew Blodgett (19 yrs) and daughter Bertha Blodgett (11 yrs). All the children were born in IL except for John Pape who was born in MN. I could not find her in the MN death index or ND death index and I tried all spellings of the name. I am seeking to learn the death date and burial place of Sarah POPE or PAPE, whose maiden name was Claussen. I believe she died in Kittson County between 1910 and 1914. She was born in Illinois in 1865. If anyone has the cemetery books, a lookup would be greatly appreciated.

I think all the ones on the birth index are related. The mother maiden name is so close on them. Keep in mind. That index was created by people trying to read someone elses handwritting was back then. The one listed as Julins Bushie is most likely Julius Bushie. Think about what a handwritten u and a n look like. And ink quality/pens were not high quality. Some made their own inks.
So you might find more doing a search on various spellings of Bushie.
You might not know where Caribou, MN is located. It is two miles west of Roseau County on hwy 4. The NE corner of Kittson County, MN.

We do not have a birth cert. That is one reason we are having so much trouble finding information on her. I will have to look in my information when I get home to see if we have listed any siblings of Lina. Are your relatives you are talking about Native American? We were told that Lina was part or full indian. We still have not confirmed that fact.

I have created cemetery indexes for Kittson County and Anna 'Elisabet' Olson Williamson is buried in Eidsvold Cemetery, Norway Twp., Kittson Co., Minnesota. From Halma, MN go south on Cty. 20 for 1 3/4 miles - the cemetery is on your left. Her burial lot is S-3-15. There is an index at the cemetery. Do you know who her parents were? I would like to add that information to the Eidsvold Cemetery index. Here is the family information I have on Anna. Anna 'Elisabet' Olson Williamson was born 21 Nov 1855 and died 15 Dec 1909. There is a WW1 draft card that shows that he was born the 3 of june 1880.

There is also a Family tree on Ancestry for this family. It shows that Erik´s son Carl Vik was born 6 may 1910 and died 8 jan 2003 in Hayward,Alameda california. He was married to Belle Wang born 14 mar 1910 in Minnesota. She died 19 jun 1963 in Alameda california. They got 1 living son.

Peter Vik 33 has in 1910 got married to Jennie Vik 28. They are living in Bronson Kittson Minnesota Jennie is born in Minnesota but her parents are from Sweden.

And in cencus 1920 they are living in Percy, Kittson Minnesota

Jonas and Karin Vik were born in Hammerdal, Sweden 1834 and 1839. They immigrated to America from Sweden in 1889, together with there five children, Andrew (Anders) b 1869, Christine (Kerstin) b 1872, John (Jonas) b 1875, Peter (Per) b 1877 and Erik (Erik) b 1880.
They settled down on a farm south of Halma.

In the middle of 1890´s immigrated Jonas Vik´s sister Christine (Kerstin) with her husband Johan and three children Christine (Kerstin) b 1873, Anna b 1878 and Ole (Olof) b 1886. They were all from Hammerdal, Sweden.

I have found some information about these familys here on rootsweb

But I wonder what happend with the Vik´s children Christine, Peter and Erik. Does anyone know?
And what happpend to Anna and Ole Olson?

Thanks very much for this info. Unfortunately, I don't believe that this is our McFarlane family. They homesteaded in Pembina County, North Dakota and while traveling to Roseau County in Minnesota, Florence passed away and was buried. We think she was buried in Tegner Township near Kennedy in an unmarked grave, but there does not seem to be a record. At least we have not yet found one. We will keep looking. Thanks to all who have responded.

McFarlanes in Kittson County

In Kittson county's "Our Northwest Corner: Histories of Kittson County, MN" (copyright 1976 by the Kittson county Historical Society and the Red River Valley Historical Society) has information on McFarlane families who settled in Kittson county on apges 270-271. Perhaps these are relations, and Florence died while they were with these individuals? Hopefully this info will help you figure out if that is a possibility. Here are a few excerpts from what was written:

(pg 271) (By Lillian MacFarlane Murray) "My parents, Mr. and Mrs. John MacFarlane, were of Scotch extraction and lived in Morristown, Ontario. My father was a widower when he and my mother were married. He had five children, three girls and two boys, Margaret (Mrs. John Murray), James MacFarlane, Christina (Mrs. Tom Winters), Agnes (Mrs. Dan McKenzie) and John MacFarlane.

In 1880 my father came to Minnesota and got land in the Red River valley. He filed on one hundred sixty acres of land twenty miles south of the Canadian boundry and seven miles east of the Red River. He built a log house and then went back to Ontario. The following spring my parents, the three oldest children and my Aunt Christie set out for Minnesota. The two youngest children stayed with relatives in Ontario. My father made arrangements with his Scotch neighbor, young Rory Murray, to meet them, and after a hard journey they arrived. The Murray house was crowded but they welcomed the folks in their quiet Scotch way....

...My sister and borther came out from Ontario as my parents wanted all their children together. My mother had seven children, three girls and four boys namely: Mary or Mae (Mrs. B.F. Wooley), Peter (Rev. Peter MacFarlane), Daniel, Ernest E., Geraldine, Lillian (Mrs. Angus Murray) and Russell. So with the five of the first family there were twelve of us which was a large family in this or any country....

to who is reading and is looking for grumbo,grandboise,grambo,etc.well here i go to try and explain this the name used to be grandboise til they changed it in the late 1800 or early 1900 but they shortened up the name so it would be easier to spell.my great grandmother is rose grumbo last residence lancaster/kittson mn we are related to any body living around pembina/bathgate/cavalier.etcto make it easier we are related to most mondor,or mondour,demaine,orproudlove.

Norman grandbois/grumbo is my husband's grandfather and Russell's dad's name is clifford grumbo also Norman was married to Emma Rose Watters, she did go by the name of Rose.

St. Olaf's is such a cool church. I would be interested in hearing more about your project. I have visited Donaldson many times but not in about 20 years. My Great Grandparents lived in Donaldson and are buried in the cemetary. They are Per and Anna Nelson. My Grandfather is Nels Nelson. Opal Thompson is my Grandfather's first cousin (through Anna.) Her father Johan Anderson Lind is also buried in Donaldson. All but two of his children immigrated from Sweden to the area around Donaldson around 1900. My Great Grandparents were the last to come in 1910 and they (all) farmed in Kittson and Warren Co. They also homesteaded north of Roseau, Mn. Later my grandfather moved to the Sprague area in Manitoba.

The 1911 Canada census has an Aron Anderson (Head) with an Amelie (note the spelling change) Anderson (wife) and children to that date as you have listed, residing on a 1/4 section of land near Young Saskatchewan, Canada. I believe Amelia to be the sister of my GGF Carl A Magnuson. Carl A Magnuson and some of his family came from Hallock MN, USA to Canada in 1906. As the border was open at that time, there do not seem to be any records of the crossing.

I found a death certificate for my grandfather. Edward Dorion, pod was said to be kittson county but it also says Pembina ND. So not sure?

It does have his birthdate Edward Edmond Dorion, 22 april 1857, canada. He died from an auto accident.

I can not read what they have down for his parents and so have hit a roadblock on discovering any information on him.

I am not sure when he married my Grandmother, Emma Sophia thor but they had many children. The first one born in 1911 it seems.

Any information would be more than I have thank you so much
