Thanks for checking. I think I am looking for a Johan W. Briskie (Brueske) and his wife Friedrike. I feel certain that they were related to the individuals above but sadly I cannot yet find the connection. I think I'll check with Wisconsin again. Linda Seashore Larsen

It's a biography book of the county. It is very similiar to other biography books in other counties. Some biographies are submitted by family or people that knew the person but not every person has a biography in the book. It also talks about the businesses, churchs, schools, etc.

My great grandmother is Mathilda (Tillie) Brueske (Briski, Bruske). She is listed on the Douglas County, Alexandria 1880 census. Her husband was Charles Leonard Abbott. Do you have any information about her parents,Johan and Friedrike. I'm not 100% sure that those are her parents but lots of Brueskes moved to the area from Germany via Wisconsin. Thanks in advance.

The Sawyers and Stablers are not among the families I am researching. While searching the Douglas County papers for stories on my wife's relatives and related families, I transcribed all the birth, death and marriage stories I found, and posted the death and marriage stories. Anything I found on them will show up in the postings on the Douglas County RootsWeb page. You might find some more information there.

You might also try posting some additional information, such as obituaries you have, or other information about the family. That could well attract a response from other people who are researching those two families. Doing so has helped me make several useful contacts.

I hope you found the postings helpful, and that you can make the right connections.
The Album of the Ages is a large bound compilation of family biographies published by the Douglas County Historical Society in about 1978. Any family memeber could submit a family history, bio or write up for inclusion in the volume. I do not beleive there was any cost to including a family write up. All families included had Doulglas County ties. The volume is no longer available and is considered fairly rare. I have a copy if you want a look up. Furnish full family names and township if possible. It is indexed only to last names so searches can be quite difficult for commmon Scandanavian names. tommy solberg tsolberg@tampabay.rr.com

I just checked the online Minnesota Death Index at the Minnesota History Center. Searching on "Von Baumbach" produced two hits. Searching on "Baumbach" produced 16 hits. But no Jacob.

One possible strategy would be old-fashioned courthouse research. If you think they died in Stearns County, go through the indexes of the death record books at the courthouse, looking for any variant of the name that you can think of. That might work.

But you might keep in mind that death records are NOT necessarily complete. Sometimes the local authority, sometimes the township clerk, just never recorded some deaths. I did a search for a lady who was told that there was no death record in Wright County of the death of Ed Cavanaugh, who froze to death in a blizzard in April 1884 while walking home from St Cloud to Corinna Township. I checked the courthouse records myself, and ended up with notes on lots of Cavanaughs/Kavanaughs--but no sign of Poor Old Ed. Eventually, I stumbled on a single newspaper mention of the event. From my postings on the Douglas Counthy page, I was contacted by a man in Sweden who found two stories of a great-great grandmother who died in Alex--the only trace he had been able to find of the family since they left Sweden. So far, we have been unable to find a death or burial record in Alex. So there might NOT be a death record to find--but if you look, you can at least establish what isn't there.

Hope this helps some.

Joel

Jeremiah George Callaghan from Alexandria, MN is a relative of mine. His father's name was Thomas.

His mother, Margaret, was born in Ireland as well. Her maiden name was also Callaghan (O'Callaghan when in Ireland), but she and her husband were not related.

The obit said "Main, New Hampshire", which as far as I can tell, is non-existent. I took it to mean NH, near the ME border. Exeter is reasonably close. Jerry's next youngest sister, Margaret (my great-grandmother) was born in Berwick, ME, which is quite close to New Hampshire.

Joel, thank you SO MUCH for posting the obit and marriage announcement. I found them some months ago and found them to be very helpful. If it's not a lot of work, I'd love to get a copy of Jerry's death certificate. I'd be happy to pay any related expenses for it.

Gretchen

The happy young people are Mr. Ed Timm and Miss Emilie, daughter of Mrs. Karl Zinter of Miltona. They were married at the German Lutheran church in Miltona Tuesday, December 7th, by the Rev. Mr. Schmidt, from where they at once departed for the festive wedding dinner prepared by the bride’s parents. It was a delightful occasion.

Transcribed from microfilm copy of newspaper

Yes Amos and Amelia Robidou were in Alexandria in the 1870 census. Thanks for the other information. This is not my family, but I am working on a history project and other members of the family are part of that project. So I may check out the newspapers later.

There might be more news items about the family, just casual mentions of their daily activities in the old newspapers. The Douglas county historical society has family files on some families and they may have some of that content in the file. Were they in the city of Alexandria for the 1870 census?

The contact information for Douglas County Historical is

DOUGLAS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
1219 Nokomis Street
Alexandria, MN 56308-3712
320-762-0382
320-762-9062
www.dchsmn.org
Executive Director: Rachel Barduson
bardo@dchsmn.org
Hours: Office 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; Tours 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Research Center 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This family is a real puzzle. I think this Amelia was the first wife of Amos Robidou. They were married in the 1870 census in Alexandria, MN and she was listed as an invalid. I wonder if they went to Florida, thinking it would be better for her health. In the 1870 census they had no children. But in the 1880 census, Amos was married to Mary and had two children born about 1867 and 1869. I wonder if they were Mary's children from a first marriage. In 1880 Amos and Mary were in Bismark, Dakota Territory. does anyone have any answers??

I think John Taylor may have died in Fillmore County, Minnesota, rather than Douglas County. He is listed among the pensioners living in Fillmore County, Minnesota, in 1883. I found a clue in an online transcription of the obituary for his widow, Mary Lake Taylor, that would give his date of death around 1884. The URL is: http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.min..., in the posting "Taylors of Fillmore County." The contributor is jwatne2010 who posted transcriptions of the obituaries on 14 January 2007.

Check out this website for more information maybe about Pug Wagner.
http://www.redlinart.com/gallery.cfm

Terry Redlin the artist is married to a Langenfeld.

Quotation from the website: (no answer to Pug's first name, but maybe the gallery has that info)

Langenfeld Ice Cream Display
In addition to the video presentations, the Redlin Amphitheater is home to an impressive collection of Langenfeld Ice Cream memorabilia. Terry Redlin’s wife, Helene, is a Langenfeld. Her family owned and operated Langenfeld Ice Cream and Dairy in Watertown, South Dakota until the early 1960’s.

The collection was, in large part, the personal collection of Bob Wagner, Helene Langenfeld’s cousin. Bob’s father, “Pug” Wagner, was the ice cream maker at Langenfeld’s Ice Cream and Dairy. Hand-written recipes from “Pug” are included in the collection!

Other collectibles were donated by John Langenfeld, Helene’s brother. The largest antique on display is a beautiful soda fountain which was donated to the Redlin Art Center by Charles Redlin, Terry and Helene’s son.

The antiques on display are a fitting addition to the nostalgic scenes in Terry Redlin’s paintings.

So I've spent some time with the Hafslo bygdebok lately.

Taryn

Taryn - Thanks for all the info. Hans Bugge is my first cousin twice removed. His father Johannes was the brother
of my great-grandfather Jens Samuelson Bugge. Are you a member of the Bugge or Brown family? Are you in Douglas County? I'm in Wisconsin and planning a road trip to Urness in fall. Thanks for all the info.

Hi Susan, did you see this thread too?

http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=30&...

Information about Anna Brown's father also.

To find Kim Goldie, you might have to google her with quotation marks around her name.

Here is something someone else posted there in Clallam co. Washington:

Looking for burial of Christine A. BROWN in Sequim, Clallum County WA. She died 24 Feb 1938 in Seattle and her obit gives Sequim as her burial place. I'm hoping that she was buried with her husband, Andrew A. BROWN, who died by 1913, death & burial places uncertain. But they emigrated from MN to WA in 1909, so I assume he died in WA. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 15th Wisconsin Infantry. They were both born in Norway, and their children (all b. in MN) were:
1. Anna A. (Brown) Bugge - res. Los Angeles in 1838
2. Anfina M. (Brown) Marshall - res. Seattle in 1838
3. Ida M. (Brown) Dobin - res. St. Paul MN in 1838
4. Albert L. Brown - res. Portland in 1938
5. Flora/Florence C. Brown - res. Seattle in 1938
Would like to be in touch with living descendants; I have more info to share.
deegrimsrud@hotmail.com

Scott C. Meeker (View posts) Posted: 2 Dec 2000 7:00AM

Classification: Query
Surnames: BROWN
According to information in the Andrew A. Brown papers, he died December 1, 1912, at Port Williams, and is buried in the Sequim View Cemetery, Sequim, Clallun County, Washington. His papers are in the collection of Manuscripts, Special Collections, University Archives, University of Washington Libraries in Seattle.

Andrew Brown was a Captain of Company H of the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, the famous "Scandinavian Regiment" that fought in the American Civil War. There is a profile of Capt. Brown, complete with a photo of him in uniform and quotes from letters he wrote home from the war, posted on the 15th Wisconsin website. The profile can be accessed via the link below.

Then he didn't give a link. Ouch.
Hi Susan,
Kim's posting for Hans Bugge is from 2003, I wonder if she has changed email.
I did find this Hans Bugge, born 1863, leaving the port of Bergen Norway in June 1880 at the age of 17. That would explain maybe why he was not on the 1880 US census, which also was usually taken in June.

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

6704 Bergen 1430 1880 Juni 18 Hans Bugge m 1863 17 Hafslo Hafslo Allan Linie

Leaving June 18, Hans Bugge, male, b. 1863, age 17, from Hafslo, born in Hafslo on the Allan shipping line.

Hafslo now has a bygdebok, a farm and family history book, which includes the Bugge farm. The family was originally from Voss. and Anna Brown, daughter of Andrew/Anders, was born in Norway, according to a census from Chicago.

Take a look at all the postings in this thread:
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.min...

Thank you for the reply. This family seems difficult to track down. I have searched the census records and the birth/death records for Minnesota. The next shot would be at the County level. The census records show this family in Goodhue, Olmstead, Dodge and Todd counties. Effie Irene Shelton married Robert Daniel Oliver. They are my great grandmother and great grandfather. Anyway, thanks for your help and I'll check out your suggestions.

Bob

Hi Bob,
If your Sheltons are/were from Douglas County, the best place for you to start is the Douglas County historical society in Alexandria. They have family files organized by last name.
DOUGLAS COUNTY
DOUGLAS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
1219 Nokomis Street
Alexandria, MN 56308-3712
320-762-0382
320-762-9062
www.dchsmn.org
Executive Director: Rachel Barduson
bardo@dchsmn.org
Hours: Office 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; Tours 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Research Center 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Minnesota history center has birth and death indexes online, for some of those dates earlier in the 1900's.
You can then send for the death and birth certificates for a pretty reasonable fee - $9 for death certificates,

http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Search.cfm

Birth certificate search:
http://people.mnhs.org/bci/

But I did a quick search for Shelton, and didn't find any in Douglas County. Hmmm. Maybe a nearby county, like Ottertail? That borders on the north.

Maybe you could give some specifics, names, dates of those you know, or you could post this query in the county where you know they lived?

Here is the ancestry.com list of Minnesota county query websites:

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.min...

Taryn

I think that this might be the point of reference for your query? It's an announcement of the father's death back in Copenhagen, Denmark.

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.min...

The Lake Review
Osakis, Douglas County, Minnesota
Thursday, August 17, 1899
Page 1, Col. 6.

Alexandria.

From Alexandria Post News:

Mr. A. H. Gregerson last week received a letter from his old home bearing the sad news of the death of his father, Mr. H. Gregerson who died July 7 at his home in Coipenhagen, Denmark. He was 77 years of age and had retired from business about fifteen years ago. Mr. Gregersen had intended going across the ocean next year to be present at his parents’ golden wedding anniversary and probably will still make the trip as all of the living members of the family, his mother, two brothers and two sisters, are in Copenhagen and his mother’s health is far from good.

Transcribed from microfilm copy of newspaper at Minnesota History Center, St. Paul, MN.

I looked in the Book, Douglas County Album of the Ages, and find 4 references to Mr. Gregerson. I believe the A maybe stood for Anton, since one reference called him Tony. He managed a department store in Alexandria, Douglas County.

I have a 1916 book of some Douglas county and Grant county biographies, and Anton H. Gregersen's biography is in this book. You are trying to find out more about Anton H. Gregerson's family back in Denmark, to see if he is related to you?

Here's what it says about his family back in Denmark:

Anton H. Gregersen was bornin the city of Copenhagen, on Sept. 13, 1865, son of Hans and Christina Gregersen, who spent all their lives in their native land . . . In 1882, being 18 years of age, Anton H. Gregersen came to the United States and proceeded directly to Minnesota, locating for a time at Alden in Freeborn county, presently going thence to Minneapolis, where he began working for the wholesale house of Regan Brothers. From there he went to Litchfield, and was there engaged as a clerk and a bookkeeper in a general store until 1887, in which year he went to St. Paul (until 1899) when he engaged in business for himself in Alexandria.
. . . in 1884, a little more than two years after coming to Minnesota, Anton H. Gregersen was united in marriage to E. J. Gottshamer, of St. Paul.

I hope that finding out some of those details helps you. It doesn't really say siblings, but perhaps that's where he went first in southern Minnesota.

Where did you see the original reference to H. Gregerson? Was this a reply to a post, or did you see it in a census? Maybe you can link the original information here?

Taryn
