thank you tina,i'm calling the library today. :-) i've been looking for what happened to the mccollums from ludlow and springfeld. there is not much info out there. i know what happened to george henry,it's joseph, peter, mary, frank and michael stephen that i'm curios about.my parents divorced when i was 3,and dad died when i was 10. i met an uncle thirty years later, but he has no clue or care about where or who we come from. unfortunatly i got bit by the genealogical bug at 40 and the path back in family history has overgrown.

You have the date for Joseph you could check the library in Springfield for the obit. The only problem is back then most obit's were only death notice's. I paid 30 dollars for my ggrandmothers and it did not mention her maiden name and her youngest child it was no help for me at all. If yu go to the Springfield library website they have contact info you could request an obit. The newspaper access on line only goes back to 1988.I know information can be very confusing.
Tina

I read with interest your posting of the Thomas Allen gravestone in the Calvary Cemetery in Chicopee. My great granduncle was Thomas Allen. He died in Holyoke on 17 Mar 1876. His death record indicated he was 30 years old, married, his parents were David and Ann, and he was buried in Chicopee (cemetery not identified). Unfortunately, no birth and death dates appeared on the gravestone. However, the marker identified a son (also Thomas) born in 1880. This birth-date rules out Thomas as my great granduncle. I would greatly appreciate learning if there is another Thomas Allen buried in Calvery Cemetery that matches the vital statistics for my relative.

She had a nephew named John J. Sheehan who came to the US in 1893 from Cork City, Ireland. She paid for the tickets for him and his family to come to the US. Thanks for your help!

Woronoco was a Mill town back then and as Carol said is a section of Russell. I think your best bet would be to contact the Russell Libray at Main St.Russell, Ma.01071
The Historical Commitee works out of there and has the town archives in the building. I live in Russell if you would like me to check it out for you. Iwill give you my e-mail and you can give me the info.
tnoyes12@russellma.net
Tina

Have recently discovered a note on the back of a photo, which had been pasted in an old photo album, which says "first day of school here at Woronoco." It is a photo of my Mom, and never knew her to be in Massachusetts at all. She was born in Baltimore MD & raised in Buffalo, NY.

Trying to verify her in Woronoco, by perhaps contacting the school. She would have entered kindergarten, or its equivalent, between 1926-1927. She is not wearing a uniform, so I am looking for a public school.

Anyone have any ideas as to who to contact & if the info is available?

Appreciate any help. thank you

Jane

My ggg grandfather was Urial W Lanphear (1815-1885) of Monson, MA. I can find loads of info on the Lanphear line but where I am stuck is with Urial's wife Polly B. It took me forever to find (and now I can't remember how I even found this) that Polly B. is Bethany Vineca (or possibly Vinica). She was born 24 Jan 1819 in MA and died 3 Feb 1892 in Monson, MA. Although I found a Andrew Vineca from South Brimfield, MA born 1749 and his many children I cannot find a connection between any of them and Bethany. However, I do find a John Vinica on the 1820 census in Monson, MA with a daughter under 10 years of age. So, I am thinking that is her father. But that is it. I can't find John again on any census's (I searched 1790-1880) and nothing on the web on any Vinica genealogy. If anyone has any information on the Vinica's of Monson, MA I would greatly appreciate it!

I wonder if you might be willing to try to find an obituary for the following relative--
Louis / Lewis Cook - b July 1825- d 24 Sept 1901, in Suffolk County (I believe)-- that was their address in 1900 census (1196 Dorchester Ave.). If you want nest time I am downtown I can search for an obituarysince you provided me with the actual date of death. There is also a new history and genealogical library that opened in Springfield and there is a family history library I believe in Ludlow. You can also try the local library. In 1940, on his draft registration card, he reports his place of birth as Lonski, Poland. I can't find any town by this name. My wife's ggrandmother was Marya Sroczyk (nee Augustyn). When she immigrated she came to stay with her uncle Stanley Szlachetka in Chicopee. Her family was from Rakszawa, Lancut, Poland about 150 miles East of Krakow.

Dear Jim,

The envelopes are surely one of the valuable resources. The one you found says not only 'Barycz', but also 'Wesoła'. There is 10 places called 'Barycz' in Poland and ca. 11 called 'Wesoła'. The two nearest ones are in the former Galicia and now in podkarpackie county, see: http://maps.google.pl/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=pl&...

The information itself is not very useful however, as you do not know the sender of that letter. But if you look at the distribution of the name Knurek in Poland: http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/knurek.html you will find that it is most popular in the Brzozów district - the same where Barycz is located in.

We can therefore with high probability state two things:
1. The letter was posted in Barycz/Wesoła, near Brzozów, podkarpackie county, Galicia, during WWI,
2. Katarzyna Knurek came most probably either from Brzozów or from Wesoła.

You did not specify the question however and we don't know what we are looking for therefeore it is difficult to say how useful the information is. If you would like just to provide that information 'to whom it may concern' I would suggest you post it on the Poland/unknown board with the subject: 'Katarzyna Knurek from Barycz/Wesoła to Springfield, MA, 1914' and specifying the surname Knurek in the appropriate field.
1914 envelope to Katarzyna KNUREK of Springfield, Massachusetts from Barycz

I recently found a photograph an old envelope that was sent to Katarzyna KNUREK of Springfield, Massachusetts from Barycz, Poland? in 1914. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on KNUREK, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page), or click on the link below. I am unable to find Katarzyna KNUREK in a census or similar source and wondered if someone more familiar with Springfield can locate her. I believe that Barycz may be the birthplace of Katarzyna KNUREK (or her parents) and this envelope will be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable on the philgen website) and have started the philgen website. I do not know if the letter that was in the envelope still exists.

Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=form&am...

Burtis A Bennett married Anna I Yenney sometime between 1900 and 1902 (see "The History of Ludlow, Massachusetts, with Biographical Sketches of Leading Citizens" etc. online).

Burtis died 21 April 1902.

I'm researching Anna, who was a school teacher in the area for several years, and hope there is an obit for Burtis since he is listed as part of a prominent Ludlow family, which might tell me a bit more about him.

Many thanks for any help,
Jeannie
