Valentine Family

I am researching Johan George Valentine (1715-1783) who lived near Rocky Ridge, and any of his descendants. He married Anna Margaretha Matthis and had the following children I believe: Jacob Otto Valentine who married Anna Mary Freeze; Johan Heinrich "Henry" Valentine who married Maria Catharina Freeze and Elizabeth Freeze; George Valentine who married Mrs. Anna Mary Stull Matthis; Catherine Valentine who married Christian Wagner, and John Valentine who married Anna Margaret Ott.

Johan George Valentine (1715-1783) evidently had a brother, Hans Michael Valentine who married Maria Elizabeth Deitinhefer.

I would love to hear of any additional information on this family.

I am interested in information of Catherine daughter of J. George Valentine. Does anyone have information on her. Does her father's will state that she was married to Christian Wagner? I would appreciate any help and can share what I have.
Thank you,
Amanda

Amanda -

We're leaving tomorrow on a short vacation, but when I get home I'll check on your question. I recently purchased a rather large genealogical compilation on the Valentine family and I'm betting the answer is in there.

In answer to Amanda's posting of 11-5-04. The following is info I found in a genealogy compilation by Paul Valentine titled "Valentine Family Genealogy, descendants of Johan George Valentine, 1715-1784, of Germany and Maryland."

Catherina "Katy" Valentine, daughter of Johan George Valentine, was born 1759 and died Mar. 27, 1849. She married Christian Wagner about 1783. He was born Apr. 7, 1768 in Emmittsburg vicinity, MD on a property called "Wagner's Fancy." He died Jan. 4, 1832. Catherina took her first communion on July 30, 1775 at the Woodsboro Evang. Luth. Church in Woodsboro, MD. She and husband Christian Wagner may be buried at the Libertytown Catholic burying ground, MD. Christian's parents were Michael Waggoner and Maria Elizabeth Schuee from Michelfeld, Schwaben, Wurtemberg, Germany. They came to America on the ship "Saint Andrew" along with Johan George Valentine (Catherina's father). In 1781 Christian was drafted (presumably this means into the military). Later in 1795 he was a tanner residing near Libertytown, MD. The children of Christian Wagner and Catherina Valentine were as follows.

Margareta Wagner, born Feb. 6, 1784; died before 1811; never married.

James Valentine Wagner, born 1796; died 1851; possibly married to Martha H. Atkins on Jan. 25, 1849.

Upton Wagner, born Feb. 16, 1800; died March 16, 1822 probably in Maryland; buried at Libertytown, MD.

Joseph Lily Wagner, born Feb. 18, 1800 (thus must have been Upton's twin but born two days later?); died Jan. 3, 1868; married Mary Sophia Gillispie on Jan. 28, 1823. She was born 1805 and died July 7, 1838. Joseph is buried at Libertytown, MD.

Mary Ann Wagner, born 1802. Married #1 Thomas Buffington on Jan. 18, 1822; married #2 Levi Buffington Dec. 15, 1840.

Basil Wagner, born Feb. 8, 1806.

Dennis Wagner, born 1809; married Sophia E. Harritt Oct. 10, 1846.

Amanda, please let me know how any of this fits into your family line.

Karen, thank you for the reply. I beleive though that there may be a mix up here.

The Catherine Wagner, wife of Christian buried inthe CAtholic cemetery was not born in 1759. The dates on the tombstone do not add up to that. I beleive the wrong Christian Wagoner is attributed here. Is there a copy of George valentine's will floating around anywhere? I cannot seem to find it.

This is what I know.

My Christian Wagner born 1763 in New Jersey to John Adam wagner and Maria Sophia Apgar.

Adam died in Frederick County, Md in 1779, his widow married Stoffel?christopher Nied?Need in Frederick County in 1781. Her son Christian was married to an Anna Catherine December 10, 1782. Anna Catherine was born in 1759. They had the following children:

Margaret born 1784 (she is the Margaret baptized in Apple's Church in 1784.) she married a gallagher then Peter Aller, in Fulton County PA.

George (1785-) married mary Hershey in Fulton County PA.

John/Christ born circa 1795.
Elizabeth born 1800 (baptized in Hagerstown, MD).
Sophia married a Matthews.

Christian waggoner served in the Revolution did his father Adam. My Christian moved to Fulton/Bedford County, PA around 1785. They are buried on their family farm. They were not Catholic, niether was the Wagner family of Michael Wagner.

I keep seeing references to Anna Catherine Valentine marrying a Christian wagner, but I don't think most people know that there were 2 Christian's in Frederick County at the time.

My Christian also had a brother William born circa 1760. He married Maria Nied in 1790. My wagner's married into the Nied's and both families are recorded in Apple's Church.

When my Christian moved to PA, his neighbors were Valentine's and matthews.

If you can add any insight into my dilema I would really appreciate it.

Thank you,
Amanda

I think some info has gotten garbled in our communications. The information in Paul Valentine's book states that Christian Wagner was born April 7, 1768, son of Maria Elizabeth Schuee and Michael Waggoner from Germany. I think I already gave you the info on Christian and Catherine's children from that book. I have no info on them beyond what is in Mr. Valentine's book. My research centers around Catherine's brother Jacob Otto Valentine

I am interested in this line as I am decent from Mary A Wagner & Levi Buffington. I came across the same compilation but suspect that a 20 year gap exists with Mary Ann. Buffington children with Levi are listed starting with Albert in 1845 and continued until 1865 when my direct ancestor Laura Virginia was born. It is unlikely that Mary Ann gave birth to her if born in 1802. The Baltimore census record from 1860 has her as 37; the 1880 census 58 which could be read as 78. I tend to think that she was born in 1822 and is sibling of James Frederick Wagner born 1820.

Do you think is possible that Upton was their father during his short adulthood?

Thanks for stimulating my interest in this branch again.

I do not know much about the children of Christian Waggoner and his descendants. I can tell you that the book written 20 years ago has some mistakes in it. I have contacted the author. he does know that there are some issues. There were 2 Christians Waggoner's. Yours and mine. Mine was born in New jersey in 1763 to Johan Adam waggoner and MAria Sophia Apgar. This family appears in Frederick County by 1776. My Christian married Anna CAtherine Valentine (1759-1840) in 1782. They had: Margaret, george, John/Christ, Sophia, and Elizabeth. This family moved to Fulton County, PA around 1785. Christian and Anna Catherine are buried on their family farm. I do not know what the maiden name of you Christian's wife is. That may hold a key. Sorry I could not be of more help to you. Most of the people I have spoken to about these families got their information on this line from the book.
